    Abstract:

    Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and ulcer in the lining of the large intestine. In this study we investigate the effect of Rhizophora apiculata (R. apiculata) on acetic acid induced colitis in mouse model. Experimental animals were randomized into four groups: normal untreated, colitis control, R. apiculata treated group and sulfasalazine treated group. R. apiculata significantly (p<0.01) decreased macroscopic score and wet weight of damaged colon compared to colitis control. This effect was confirmed biochemically by significant (p<0.01) reduction of colitis associated increase in myeloperoxidase activity. R. apiculata significantly (p<0.05) increased anti-oxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) levels compared to colitis control. R. apiculata significantly (p<0.01) reduced lipid peroxides (LPO), nitric oxide (NO) and inflammatory mediators such as myeloperoxidase (MPO), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expressions compared to colitis control. R. apiculata treatment significantly (p<0.01) inhibits the translocation of NF-kB p65 and p50 subunits. Taken together these findings suggest that R. apiculata prevents acetic acid induced colitis in experimental mouse model and may serve as an excellent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that could potentially be useful as a (natural) therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

    Abstract:

    A methanolic extract of Rhizophora apiculata was evaluated for its anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activity against B16F10 melanoma cells in BALB/c mice. The administration of R. apiculata extract was shown to inhibit the solid tumor development in mice. R. apiculata treatment significantly reduced tumor cell glutathione (GSH) levels as well as serum γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in the tumor-bearing animals. The total white blood cell count and hemoglobin levels were also significantly increased in extract-treated hosts. The use of R. apiculata substantially reduced the acute inflammation (assessed as paw edema) induced by carrageenan and also reduced inflammation edema induced by formalin. Analysis of this methanolic extract revealed a high content of 4-pyrrolidinyl, pyrazole, and ketone derivatives. These studies suggest that R. apiculata extract could be used as a (natural) anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agent.

    Chemotherapeutic drugs available today are immunosuppressant, cytotoxic and with variety of side effects in cancer chemotherapy. Plant based immunomodulators are often an auxiliary therapy to overcome the repulsive effects of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents and to restore immunity with normal health. Mangroves Rhizophora apiculata (R. apiculata) extract was found to protect mice from cyclophosphamide (CTX) induced leukopenia. The leukocyte counts in the R. apiculata extract treated animals was significantly increased (10425 ± 163 mm3) where the control group shows no significant increase (7855 ± 282 mm3). The leukocytes count in CTX induced group treated with R. apiculata extract shows significant increase (5235 ± 303 mm3) when compared with CTX induced group (3416 ± 172 mm3) on the same day. The hemoglobin level of CTX induced group treated with R. apiculata extract shows increase in the level compared with the CTX induced animals.     Mangrove ecosystem is valuable coastal ecosystems for human because its economic, physical and ecological functions. One of the coastal areas which is the habitat of the mangove ecosystem is the coast of West Muna Regency. The coastal development in the coastal area had reduced the mangrove area and the density of mangrove ecosystem, which in turn affected the structure and density status of the ecosystem. The number of mangrove species in the coast of West Muna Regency was ten species consisting of Bruguiera cylindrica, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, Sonneratia alba, Xylocarpus granatum, Ceriops tagal, Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea, and Calophyllum inophyllum. The total density of mangrove was 752 trees/ha, however, by seeing in detail through each sampling station the density of Station I, II, III and IV was 879, 621, 687 and 820  trees/ha, respectively. Those densities are categorized as low density.Mangrove merupakan ekosistem pesisir yang sangat penting bagi manusia karena memiliki fungsi ekonomi, fisik, dan ekologi. Salah satu wilayah pesisir yang merupakan habitat ekosistem mangove adalah pesisir Kabupaten Muna Barat. Adanya pembangunan berdampak pada pengurangan luas dan kerapatan ekosistem mangrove sehingga mempengaruhi struktur dan status kerapatan ekosistem mangrove. Jumlah spesies mangrove yang ada di pesisir Kabupaten Muna Barat adalah sepuluh spesies yang terdiri Bruguiera cylindrica, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, Sonneratia alba, Xylocarpus granatum, Ceriops tagal, Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea, dan Calophyllum inophyllum.     Abstract:

    Mangrove litter production is important in the displacement of organic matter from mangrove vegetation to water such as in the coast of West Muna Regency. However, one factor influencing it is the frequency of rainfall. This research, therefore, aims to determine the influence of the frequency of rainfall in mangrove ecosystem by obtaining data through the fractional wet weight. The results showed that the biomass fraction with the largest amount were Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, and Sonneratia alba with of 31.59; 31.07; and 30.96%, respectively, while the lowest was Rhizophora stylosa, Bruguiera cylindrica, and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza with of 30.07; 30.10; and 31.95%, respectively. The species with the largest leaf litter production was Bruguiera cylindrica, with of 1.72 g.m-2.day-1 which occurred in April and the lowest was Rhizophora apiculata, 0.24 g.m-2.day-1 in August. The species with the largest leaf litter production was Bruguiera cylindrica, 1.96 g.m-2.day-1 which occurred in May and the lowest was Sonneratia alba, 0.29 g.m-2.day-1 in August. In addition, the species with the largest fruit litter production was Rhizophora apiculata, 1.76 g.m-2.day-1 in April and the lowest was Sonneratia alba, 0.32 g.m-2.day-1 in September. The total litter production was 18,75 g.m-2.day-1 consisted of 6,69 g.m2.day-1 leaf litter, 6,54 g.m-2.day-1 branch litter, and 5,52 g.m-2.day-1 fruit litter.     Mangrove forests are ecosystems that make up coastal areas and river estuaries. The examples of mangrove ecosystems found in Indonesia are in Segara Anakan, Central Java. One of the aquatic biota with the economic value found in the mangrove forest ecosystem is the mud crab (Scylla spp.). The purpose of this study was to assess the distribution of mangrove crabs (Scylla spp.) to the presence of mangrove species in the mouth of the Donan River, Segara Anakan. A sampling of crabs and observations of mangrove vegetation were carried out at five stations spread from the river to the sea. The results showed that there were three types of mangrove crabs caught in the vicinity of the study, namely Scylla tranquebarica, S. olivacea, and S. serrata. The types of mangroves found include Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Avicennia rumphiana, A. alba, A. officinalis, and Nypa. Regression analysis showed that mangrove density correlated with the abundance of Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla olivacea, but contradicts the abundance of Scylla serrate. PCA analysis showed that the Crab species Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla olivacea were associated with mangroves of Avicennia alba, Avicennia rumphiana, and Rhizophora apiculata.     Abstract Depolymerisation of mangrove Rhizophora apiculata bark extracts in the presence of phloroglucinol nucleophiles in ethanol was carried out. The flavan-3-ols and their phloroglucinol adducts were separated using reversed phase liquid chromatography (HPLC). The HPLC analysis of mangrove R. apiculata showed that catechin was the most common component of the flavanoid monomers. The antioxidant activities of these mangrove tannins were evaluated and compared with several commercial tannins by using reducing power, DPPH and ABTS assays with butylated hydroxytoluene, BHT and l -(+)-ascorbic acid as standards. All tannins had reducing power and percentage scavenging activities similar to the (+)-catechin and l -(+)-ascorbic acid standards. In the DPPH assay, >90% of the maximum scavenging activity was attained at 30 μg ml −1 . Mangrove tannins had stronger antioxidant activity than the BHT standard in the DPPH assay. The results of the ABTS assay were correlated with the DPPH assay. Scavenging activity in the ABTS assay increased as the tannin concentration increased, up to a plateau at 50 μg ml −1 .
