    Abstract:

    This paper assesses the appeal of potential interventions on the tourism offer of Rimini, a popular Italian seaside holiday destination, by means of a choice modelling analysis. Tourism can be viewed as a composite good, its overall utility depending on the arrangement of the Component characteristics. The discrete choice experiments here incorporate as attributes a number of possible changes to current tourist activities (the subject of public debate), including them in hypothetical alternative holiday packages. The conditional logit analysis indicates that tourists show lesser preference for interventions aimed at protecting the environmental integrity of the beach and greater preference for those, such as the creation of a pedestrianised seafront with late-night opening of amenities and facilities, that are likely to diminish the role of the traditional sea, sun and Sand Component of the overall holiday experience.

    Abstract:

    Most continental sediments are polymodal, composed of overlapping Components of which the grain size generally obeys some type of natural distribution. The grain-size Components and their function types can be determined from frequency and cumulative curve plots in order to define the function formula of the grain-size distribution. The function parameters can be estimated by fitting a defined function formula to the measured grain-size data of the sample, which simultaneously achieves numerical partitioning of the sedimentary Components. Genetic analysis of grain-size Components of hydraulic and aeolian sediments demonstrates the following environmental implications: Fluvial sediment is composed of isolated saltation and suspension Components. The sediments in closed lake basins are dominated by a suspension silt-clay Component with a small proportion of saltation Sand. The fine Sand Component makes up the majority of desert Sand, overlapping with a small proportion of fine dust. Aeolian loess is composed of two overlapping Components: a short suspension-time silt Component and a long suspension-time fine Component. Aeolian material in the North Pacific deep-sea sediments is dominated by long suspension-time fine dust. The fine Component in aeolian sediments shows a consistent grain-size distribution and genetic connection from the desert Sand, loess of northern China to the North Pacific Ocean, which is mainly transported by westerly winds and is dispersed in the atmosphere, forming a background dust.     Most continental sediments are composed of overlapped Components, whose grain-size follows a type of distribution function. The Components and the function type of a sample are determined on frequency and cumulative curves of grain-size distribution so as to designate the function formula. The function parameters can be estimated by fitting designated function to measured grain-sized data of the sample, which simultaneously achieves numerical partitioning of the Components. Genetic analysis of hydraulic and aeolian sediments demonstrates the following environmental implications. Fluvial sediment is composed of isolated saltation and suspension Component. The sediment in drainage closed lakes is dominated by suspension silt-clay Component, with little portion of saltatory Sand. Fine Sand Component makes up a majority of desert Sand overlapped with small portion of fine dust. Loess is composed of overlapped short-suspending silt Component and long-suspension fine Component. Long-suspension fine dust is the unique Component of deep-sea aeolian sediment. The fine Component shows constant grain-size distribution and genetic connection from desert Sand, loess of Northern China to Northern Pacific Ocean, which is transported mainly by westerly stream and dispersed in whole stratosphere to form the background dust.

  • Eolian input into the Late Ordovician postglacial Soom Shale, South Africa

    Abstract:

    The Soom Shale Member of the Cedarberg Formation (South Africa) is a key early Paleozoic Lagerstatte that directly overlies glacigenic deposits of the Late Ordovician glacial maximum; it was deposited on the Gondwanan craton during deglacial transgression. We show that it contains a substantial coarse silt to fine Sand Component that occurs in discrete laminae intimately associated with plankton-derived organic material. We interpret this Component as loess, sourced from glacially derived debris and blown into the sea either directly or across seasonal sea ice, as happens today on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Falling through the water column, this material likely stimulated production of phytoplankton, which then sank as sediment-loaded aggregates. In marked sedimentary partitioning, these silt and/or organic laminae alternate with fine, organic-poor mud laminae that likely represent (river-derived?) nepheloid plumes and that sporadically thicken into centimeter-scale mud turbidites. Sustained eolian input directly into the surface water may have been key to maintaining the high productivity of the Soom sea and then, via eutrophication and anoxia, to the exceptional preservation of its biota.
