    Publisher Summary A parametric sweep allows for a parameter to be swept through a range of values and can be performed when running a transient, AC or DC sweep analysis. Parameters that can be varied include a voltage or current source, temperature, a global parameter, or a model parameter. A global parameter can represent a mathematical expression as well as a variable, and is defined using the PARAM part from the Special library. To define the global variable, users have to add a new property to the PARAM part by editing its properties via the Property Editor. The PARAM part has a heading called PARAMETERS, and contains a list of defined variables and their default values. The global parameter variable name and default value must be added to the PARAM part as a new property in the Property Editor. The PARAM part is found in the special library and is placed anywhere in the Schematic Page. The Property Editor is a spreadsheet that displays all the properties attached to a part. When first selected, the Property Editor will open up in one of the two modes, displaying the properties in either rows or columns. The properties listed in the Property Editor have a name and a value. By default, new property names and values are not displayed on the part in the Schematic diagram so they have to be made visible.

  • Image and Data Transfer

    This chapter discusses various techniques for image and data transfer between Capture and other Windows 95 programs. Image data can be in either raster or vector form. Display devices, such as printers, including laser and Inkjet varieties, use raster data. Raster devices generate an image from a pattern of small dots, typically 300 or 600 DPI for laser printers. Data exchange format (DXF) is a vector format that is now widely supported throughout the EDA and CAD industry. One can export DXF data only for individual Schematic Pages. To export DXF data from Capture, user opens the desired Schematic Page with the Schematic editor. Tagged image file format (TIFF) data is a raster format that is now universally supported by desktop publishing, image editing, and even word processing programs such as Microsoft Word. Part and pin properties data can be exported from Capture by using the Export Properties command from the Tools menu in Project Manager.

    This chapter illustrates the installation and configuration of OrCAD Capture for Windows Schematic drafting software. Capture has a much-improved user interface compared with the older DOS-based OrCAD SDT 386 versions. Command selection via the mouse is now clean and efficient. While Capture supports macros, users find that the improved menu structure and available hot keys negate the necessity for user-defined macros in most situations. For OrCAD Capture, recommended minimum system requirements for reasonable performance include Pentium processor, Windows 95 (or 98), and 16 MB RAM. The process of installation includes loading and configuring the software, which is usually supplied on CD-ROM. OrCAD can supply Capture on floppy disk, but most PCs running on Windows 95 are now equipped with a CD-ROM drive. OrCAD has an excellent web site as its web-based support. Capture can be configured with certain design and graphics preferences and with default values for the design template. The Capture design template contains default settings used when creating new designs. These settings include font usage, title block, Page size, grid reference, and hierarchy. Some design template settings can be modified once a design or Schematic Page has been created. The design template settings are stored in the design file. Installation of Capture creates a number of new subdirectories on the hard drive. Specific subdirectories exist for designs, libraries, fonts, and third-party add-ons. An understanding of this directory structure helps when doing file maintenance, especially for design and library file backup.
