Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 2014Co-Authors: Lap-loi Chung, Yaosheng Yang, Kuan-hua LienAbstract:SUMMARY Many significantly strong earthquakes have occurred over the years in Taiwan, which have caused tremendous damage to primary and middle School Buildings; the 921 Chi-Chi earthquake was particularly devastating. According to statistics, 786 Schools (1,958 classrooms) were damaged on September 21, 1999 during this earthquake event. The devastation showed that a lack of seismic performance is a common problem for existing School Buildings in Taiwan. Therefore, the retrofit of existing School Buildings has become an urgent issue in the prevention of possible damage in the future. The retrofit technique of adding sandwich columns to partition brick walls is proposed in this paper, and the feasibility of the proposed method was verified by in situ pushover tests of two real School Buildings, one without and one with retrofit. The experimental and analytical results show that the sandwich column itself contributes significantly to the seismic capacity of the examined School building. Moreover, the analytical results yielded conservative capacity curves when compared with the experimental results. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Experimental study on retrofit of School Buildings by adding sandwich columns to partition brick walls

Of all the public Buildings, School Buildings are the most vulnerable to earthquake damage, and the retrofitting of existing School Buildings becomes a stringent issue. In addition to cost effectiveness, the impact of retrofitting methods on the functions of the School Buildings needs to be considered. This paper therefore proposes the retrofitting of School Buildings by adding sandwich columns onto partition brick walls. The sandwich column is divided into two parts and is added to the two sides of the partition brick wall held with pairs of U-shaped bars. The retrofit does not require the removal of windows or doors in the longitudinal direction making the proposed method cost effective and minimizes the impact on the function of the School Buildings. Five full-scale specimens without and with retrofitting were designed and fabricated for testing based on the partition brick wall frames of the existing School Buildings. The specimens were subjected to cyclic loading in the out-of-plane direction through a loading frame so that the columns deformed with double curvatures. The experimental results verified the feasibility of the proposed retrofit method. The data showed that the lateral strength of the retrofitted specimen doubled that which was not and that the residual strength of the retrofitted specimen was just as high as the ultimate strength of the specimen without retrofitting. The analytical results in lateral strength yielded conservative figures compared with experimental measurements. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Journal of Cleaner Production, 2019Co-Authors: Patricia Lourenco, Manuel Duarte Pinheiro, Teresa HeitorAbstract:Abstract In Schools, light use has been consistently highlighted as a crucial factor in the performance of School Buildings; the visual comfort is connected with the students' performance and artificial light is a main source of energy consumption in the case of moderate climates. Resulting from a year-long post observational study conducted at Schools, this article explains the current situation regarding light-use management in Portuguese secondary School Buildings, from the point of view of their facilities, user behaviour and its impacts on energy use patterns. Both natural and artificial light-use patterns are considered. Although the classroom is still the functional space where students and teachers spend most of their time, new educational paradigms also require attention to be paid to other functional spaces where informal learning takes place. The study expands knowledge about light use and management in School Buildings, by linking energy use patterns to user behaviour and addressing several functional areas within the School's premises. Results showed that various factors and criteria influence behaviour patterns in different functional spaces. The main trigger factors identified in the case of user behaviour in Schools were classified and grouped according to their motivational grounds. Besides users' visual comfort parameters and functional needs, light use in Schools is also strongly influenced by organisational habits. The study led to the development of more environmentally sustainable design and management strategies in School Buildings. Light metering revealed that favourable conditions exist for making natural light the main light source at Schools. Results also showed that improvements in the design and management of circulation areas could lead to significant reductions in artificial light (and energy) use.

In the Portuguese context, a recent rise in energy consumption, after a major national refurbishment programme, confirms the need to improve energy management in Schools in order to reduce their environmental impact. Besides building design and systems, users are also a determining factor impacting energy consumption in Buildings. However, behavioural issues are still among the areas least covered by scientific literature. The present paper analyses the energy consumption patterns of eight Portuguese case-study Schools, with a methodological approach that integrates quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The approach made it possible to link the energy consumption patterns of the Schools (selected as Key Performance Indicators) with the user behaviour and management strategies. As a result, six Key Performance Strategies (KPS) were identified so as potentially to enhance the energy performance of School Buildings through use and management. Some of the identified KPS can be implemented directly through School management policies to reduce energy use and enhance efficiency. Others can be incorporated in future building design strategies. Some have the potential for being hereafter integrated into the simulation models of Buildings’ energy performance.

This is justified by the fact that such measures can promote sustainability to the future citizens, and even more, ensure a comfortable and healthy environment for educational purposes. Unfortunately, in practice School Buildings face the same, or even more intense, energy performance and indoor air quality problems as any other building. The purpose of this study is to investigate the energy efficiency, thermal environment and indoor air quality in public nursery and elementary School Buildings in the city of Kozani, located at the cold climatic zone of Greece. The survey, conducted both by in-field measurements and by questionnaires, reveals the main parameters affecting the overall performance of the investigated Buildings. The problematic building envelope, the improper control of heating and lighting systems, the absence of proper legislative measures and, above all, the lack of interest concerning the efficiency of such Buildings are the main factors in the reported efficiency.
