the impact of m a on the r d process an empirical analysis of the role of technological and market relatedness
Research Policy, 2005Co-Authors: Bruno Cassiman, Massimo G Colombo, Paola Garrone, Reinhilde VeugelersAbstract:Abstract Using information on 31 in-depth cases of individual M&A deals, we show that technological and market-relatedness between M&A partners distinctly affects the inputs, outputs, performance and organisational structure of the R&D process. While the findings in the literature on the effect of M&A on R&D are quite mixed, we can sharpen results by analysing data at the level of the R&D process. This comes at the price of a smaller sample and more qualitative data, for which caution in the interpretation is necessary. M&A between partners with ex-ante complementary technologies result in more active R&D performers after the M&A. In sharp contrast, when merged entities are technologically substitutive, they significantly decrease their R&D level after the M&A. Moreover, R&D efficiency increases more prominently when merged entities are technologically complementary than when they are substitutive. These two findings on the R&D level and the performance support the Scope Economy effect of M&A, on the one hand, and reject the scale Economy effect of M&A, on the other. Next, for cases in which partners were active in the same technological fields before the M&A, the reduction of R&D is more prominent, while the R&D efficiency gain is smaller if merged entities were rivals in the product market prior to their merger than if they were non-rival. This suggests that rival firms reap little technology gains from mergers.

synergy effect and Scope Economy hypothesis of auditor selection study on the auditor selection of cross listed companies
Journal of Shanxi Finance and Economics University, 2006Co-Authors: Y U ChuenjiangAbstract:In the paper,we give a question why the Chinese companies listed in A-share market have their home financial statements audited by Big4.We find that most companies select Big4 actively are cross-listed companies. Then we change our question into why cross-listed companies are more inclined to select Big4 to audit their home financial statements than purely domestic listed firms. In order to answer it,we analyze special market environments and duplicate auditing system faced by cross-listed companies,we give an explanation of synergy and Scope Economy hypothesis. Our empirical evidences show the domestic auditor selection of Big4 of cross-listed companies will be influenced by abroad auditor selection of Big4.

study on the third industrial revolution and paradigm transformation of china s manufacturing industry based on theoretical analysis of scale Economy and Scope Economy
American Journal of Industrial and Business Management, 2016Co-Authors: Xiaowen ZengAbstract:After the US subprime mortgage crisis in 2008, European and American developed countries have deepened “the third industrial revolution” characterized by intelligence, digitization and individualization in the global market, so as to promote their industry. This brand-new industrial revolution tide will deeply change the paradigm of traditional manufacturing industry. Through the extensive application of advanced manufacturing technology like 3D print technology, flexible production technology and reconfigurable production system, the importance of large-scale standardized production under the guidance of scale Economy in modern market declines gradually, and more and more attention is paid to the Scope Economy idea that can adapt to the market rapidly and satisfy consumers’ individualized needs. By analyzing the trend and essence of the third industrial revolution, this paper expounds the impacts that might be caused to Chinese traditional manufacturing industry, such as the reduction of labor cost advantage, localization and decentralization of production mode, gradual deepening of service degree in manufacturing industry, and suppression on the traditional industry upgrading path and industrialization process. Meanwhile, based on the analysis of scale Economy and Scope Economy, the ideological transformation from scale Economy to Scope Economy is further proposed; theoretical analysis is made for the applicability of these two under the environment of the third industrial revolution, and the theoretical basis and development direction for paradigm transformation of Chinese manufacturing industry in the future are pointed out.

long distance scrambling vp ellipsis and Scope Economy in russian
2009Co-Authors: Svitlana AntonyukyudinaAbstract:The paper presents evidence suggesting that Scope Economy (Fox, 2000) constraints QP Scope in Russian just the way it does in English. It also discusses a wide range of data on Long Distance Scrambling and argues that Quantifier Scope in Russian LDS sentences is also semantically constrained by the Scope Economy Principle: the Scope derived as a result of scrambling a QP long distance is allowed if and only if this Scope reading would not have been available prior to Scrambling. With Scope Economy (along with other output constraints) having been argued to be operative in Japanese Long Distance Scrambling as well (Miyagawa, 2006), our data constitutes further cross-linguistic evidence that reinforces the idea of Scrambling not being semantically vacuous (Bailyn, 2001). The data also constitutes evidence in favor of the Scope Economy Principle itself as well as offers some insights into quantifier Scope availability in Russian.
