  • A Novel Approach for Password Authentication Using Bidirectional Associative Memory
    arXiv: Cryptography and Security, 2011
    Co-Authors: A. S. N. Chakravarthy, Penmetsa V. Krishna Raja, P. S. Avadhani
    Abstract:

Password authentication is a very important system Security Procedure to gain access to user resources. In the Traditional password authentication methods a server has check the authenticity of the users. In our proposed method users can freely select their passwords from a predefined character set. They can also use a graphical image as password. The password may be a character or an image it will be converted into binary form and the binary values will be normalized. Associative memories have been used recently for password authentication in order to overcome drawbacks of the traditional password authentication methods. In this paper we proposed a method using Bidirectional Associative Memory algorithm for both alphanumeric (Text) and graphical password. By doing so the amount of Security what we provide for the user can be enhanced. This paper along with test results show that converting user password in to Probabilistic values and giving them as input for BAM improves the Security of the system

  • Study of deviation from Security Procedures by train drivers: a mixed-methods approach
    2018
    Co-Authors: Kartikeya Tripathi
    Abstract:

Metro rail systems (MRS’s) face a serious threat from terrorist attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Rail operators rely on civilian staff to implement Security Procedures in response to reports of suspicious items on the network. Studies in the safety domain suggest that employees at the sharp end deviate from implementing Procedures when they are under pressure to meet production goals. Using a mixed methods approach, this research was conducted to study whether same was true of Security Procedures in MRS’s, and if yes then what were the nuances of the process. The focus of research was a Security standard operating Procedure (SOP) implemented by train drivers of a MRS. Qualitative methods were used to identify the multiple goals drivers sought to meet in their work environment, their perception of the Security Procedure, and its impact on their goals in different driving conditions. Quantitative methods were then used to validate the qualitative findings by testing hypotheses on whether the drivers made the same trade-offs between Security and other goals in actual train driving conditions of the MRS and a simulator. Results showed that there was a relationship between deviation from the Procedure, the conditions in which it was performed and the drivers’ perception of the impact of the Procedure and its constituent tasks on organisational and individual goals. Human error research served as the theoretical framework of this thesis and both the positivist approach of counting error and complex systems approach of appreciating the subjective viewpoint of workers were used to bring an in-depth understanding of deviation from a Security SOP by metro rail drivers.

  • Potential Explosive Device on a Commuter Train: What Drives Train Drivers to Deviate from the Security Procedure?
    Urban Rail Transit, 2017
Co-Authors: Kartikeya Tripathi, Hervé Borrion, Taku Fujiyama
    Abstract:

Explosives pose a major threat to urban metro rail systems. Train drivers are therefore expected to regularly perform Security Procedures in response to reports of suspicious items on the train. This study was conducted to develop a multi-factorial account of deviation from one such Security Procedure by train drivers. By analysing data from focus group interviews with 30 train drivers, observation in a rail simulator, actual cab rides, and training material four major themes emerged to explain why drivers may deliberately deviate from following normative Procedures designed by their managers. This included perceived pressure from safety and service goals, stress and fatigue during peak hours of operation, and workload created by Security tasks. The results are organised in a succinct model that draws a link between drivers’ perceived pressure from multiple goals, and the changing driving conditions in which they perform. The study proposes ways for managers of urban commuter rail networks to understand the pressures that their drivers face in performing Security tasks that are not part of their conventional job profile. The findings can inform changes in training methods, encourage drivers to discuss their reasons for deliberate rule violation, and support the design of Security Procedures more likely to be implemented.
