The civil aviation industry is currently going through an evolution of the air traffic management system. The aviation communication technologies are progressively shifting towards the use of digital data instead of analog voice for traffic control, airline business, and passenger onboard entertainment systems. This paper illustrates the cause-to-effect chain link starting from the modernization of the aeronautical communication systems and leading to the network Security concern in the civil aviation. The general threats to air–ground communication are depicted and then categorized. The paper gives an overview of the civil aviation industry efforts for securing the future aeronautical data communications. The Security mechanisms and protocols proposed for this purpose are discussed. Open research issues and challenges that have to be addressed in the Security of current and future aeronautical data communication networks are presented in detail. The paper concludes with some improvement directions which can help to address those Security issues. This Survey can be used as a reference guide to first understand the factors that urge both the research community and the aviation industry to be concerned about network Security in future aeronautical data communications. Also, it can be used as a first reading to have a global overview of network Security issues, challenges and potential solutions in air–ground communication networks.

The San Francisco Chinese Food Security Module: Validation of a Translation of the US Household Food Security Survey Module

SeligmanAbstract:There are no validated scales for measuring the prevalence of food inSecurity among U.S. Chinese speakers. We validated the newly developed SF Chinese Food Security Module (a translation of the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module) among 483 Chinese-speaking adults at a street fair. Most (8/10) of the translated items performed well compared to national statistics. Food insecure households had lower income and higher financial stress and used more food coping strategies. We conclude that the translated scale successfully identifies food insecure households in a community-based sample of Chinese-speaking adults. The module is suitable for use among Chinese American immigrants, although further development is needed to assess severe food inSecurity.

Food Security of Older Adults Requesting Older Americans Act Nutrition Program in Georgia Can Be Validly Measured Using a Short Form of the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module
Journal of Nutrition, 2011Co-Authors: Marvin Johnson, Arvine Brown, Mark NordAbstract:Food Security is a newly recommended outcome measure for the Older Americans Act Nutrition Program (OAANP); however, it is unknown how best to evaluate the need for this program and assess its impact on a large scale. Therefore, we measured food Security in all new OAANP participants and waitlisted applicants in Georgia between July and early November, 2008 (n = 4731) with the self-administered mail Survey method used in the ongoing Georgia Performance Outcomes Measures project. We used a modified 6-item U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) with a 30-d reference period and 2 reminder postcards. Approximately 33% of those identified completed the Survey (n = 1594, mean age 74.6 6 9.5 y, 68.6% female, 30.6% black). Most of the respondents (91%) completed all 6 food Security questions, whereas 26 did not respond to any question. Infit and outfit statistics for each of the 6 questions were within an acceptable range. Psychometric properties observed in our food Security data were generally similar to those in the nationally representative Survey conducted by the Census Bureau and suggest that our food Security statistics may be meaningfully compared with national food Security statistics published by the USDA. Our findings suggest that food Security can be reasonably measured by a short form of HFSSM in older adults requesting OAANP. Such methodology also can be used to estimate the extent of food inSecurity and help guide program and policy decisions to meet the nutrition assistance needs of vulnerable older adults. J. Short communication The assessment of food Security in homeless individuals: a comparison of the Food Security Survey Module and the Household Food InSecurity Access Scale

HwangAbstract:Objective: To compare the Household Food InSecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), the US Food Security Survey Module (US FSSM) and a modified version of the US FSSM in which references to buying food were changed to references to getting food, in terms of their classification of food Security levels among homeless individuals, and to determine which of these instruments was most preferred by homeless individuals. Design: A cross-sectional Survey. Setting: Recruitment of participants took place at seven shelters and from three drop-in programmes that serve homeless individuals in Toronto, Canada. Subjects: Fifty individuals who were $18 years of age, able to communicate in English and currently homeless. Results: The modified US FSSM assigned 20% of participants to a lower ordinal food Security category compared with the US FSSM, and only 8% to a higher food Security category. The HFIAS assigned 30% of participants to a lower food Security category compared with either the US FSSM or the modified US FSSM, and only 10‐16% of participants to a higher food Security category. When asked to compare all three instruments, the majority of respondents (62%) selected the HFIAS as the best instrument for people who are homeless. Conclusions: A majority of homeless individuals selected the HFIAS as the best food Security instrument for people who are homeless. Our findings suggest that the HFIAS is a more appropriate instrument than the US FSSM for measuring food Security in the homeless population.

Prevalence and risk factors of food inSecurity among a cohort of older Australians

Design, setting and participants The Blue Mountains Eye Study is a cohort study of community living participants aged 49 + years. The 12-item food Security Survey was completed by 3068 participants in the cross sectional study which comprised 2335 survivors from baseline and the recruitment of an additional 1174 eligible residents. Main outcome measures Prevalence of self reported food inSecurity was calculated and multivariate logistic regression provided odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals to determine risk factors.
