    The present study was conducted to investigate the allelopathic effects of Parthenium hysterophorus weed on seed germination and Seedling Growth of tef. Flower, stem, root and leaf aqueous extracts of Parthenium at 0, 1, 5, and 10 % concentrations were applied to determine their effect on tef seed germination and Seedling Growth under laboratory conditions. Increasing concentrations of aqueous extracts of Parthenium from leaf and flower inhibited seed germination and complete failure of seed germination was recorded when the extract concentration from the leaf part was 10 %. In contrast, aqueous extracts from stem and root had no effect on tef seed germination. Roots appeared more sensitive to allelopathic effect than shoots. Extracts from flower, root and stem had a stimulatory effect on shoot length at all concentration levels, as against an inhibitory effect of leaf extracts. Root extracts at low concentration (1 %) greatly promoted root length but aqueous extracts from leaf and flower inhibited root length.

    Allelopathic effects on the seed germination and Seedling Growth of the natives play a crucial role in the successful invasion of numerous invaders. Meanwhile, soil salinity is an emerging driver of the spread of many invaders, especially in the colonization of saline habitats. Thus, the allelopathic effects of the invaders on the seed germination and Seedling Growth of the natives may be altered or even reinforced under salt stress. This study aims to address the allelopathic effects of the notorious invader Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis L.; goldenrod hereafter) on the seed germination and Seedling Growth of the native lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.; lettuce hereafter) under a gradient of salt stress. Goldenrod leaf extracts with high concentration significantly decreased root length, leaf shape index, germination percentage, germination potential, germination index, germination vigor index, and germination rate index of lettuce. However, goldenrod leaf extracts with low concentration significantly increased root length and leaf width of lettuce. Goldenrod leaf extracts with high concentration display more serious allelopathic effects on the seed germination and Seedling Growth of lettuce than those with low concentration. Salt stress regardless of concentration significantly decreased Seedling height, root length, leaf shape index, and Seedling biomass (fresh weight) of lettuce. The combined goldenrod leaf extracts and salt stress have a synergistic effect on Seedling height, root length, leaf shape index, germination percentage, germination potential, germination index, and germination rate index of lettuce. Thus, the allelopathic effects of the invaders on the seed germination and Seedling Growth of the natives may be reinforced under salt stress. Accordingly, salt stress may be beneficial to the further invasion of the invaders mainly via the reduced Growth performance of the natives.

    The percent germination and Seedling Growth of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L. cv. PBG-1) decreased with increasing concentrations of exogenous polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG). With 15% PEG in the Growth medium germination was only 33% while with 10% PEG it was 58% as compared to 93% in control. Addition of gibberellic acid (GA3) and kinetin to medium containing 10% PEG increased the germination and Seedling Growth and the effect was maximum with 6 µM GA3 which was a better inducer of Growth and germination under reduced water potential than kinetin. However, indole acetic acid (IAA) inhibited germination and Growth of stressed Seedlings. The activity of amylase in cotyledons under stress was significantly increased with GA3 while kinetin and IAA were less effective. Gibberellic acid also enhanced the mobilization of starch from cotyledons of stressed Seedlings resulting in low starch levels in cotyledons compared with stressed Seedlings.

    Abstract:

    Effects of cold plasma treatment on soybean (Glycine max L. Merr cv. Zhongdou 40) seed germination and Seedling Growth were studied. Seeds were pre-treated with 0, 60, 80, 100 and 120 W of cold plasma for 15 s. Results showed that plasma treatments had positive effects on seed germination and Seedling Growth, and treatment of 80 W had the highest stimulatory effect. Germination and vigor indices significantly increased by 14.66% and 63.33%, respectively. Seed's water uptake improved by 14.03%, and apparent contact angle decreased by 26.19%. Characteristics of Seedling Growth, including shoot length, shoot dry weight, root length and root dry weight, significantly increased by 13.77%, 21.95%, 21.42% and 27.51%, respectively, compared with control. The seed reserve utilization, including weight of the mobilized seed reserve, seed reserve depletion percentage and seed reserve utilization efficiency significantly improved by cold plasma treatment. In addition, soluble sugar and protein contents were 16.51% and 25.08% higher than those of the control. Compared to a 21.95% increase in shoot weight, the root weight increased by 27.51% after treatment, indicating that plasma treatment had a greater stimulatory effect on plant roots. These results indicated that cold plasma treatment might promote the Growth even yield of soybean.

We evaluated the effects of different soil N concentrations on lodgepole pine Seedling Growth after inoculation with P2b-2R in a year-long greenhouse study. Seedlings were subjected to monthly application of a nutrient solution containing one of four soil N concentrations as Ca(NO3)2 (5% 15N label): 0.0029, 0.029, 0.29, and 2.9 μmol·L–1, referred to as very low, low, medium, and high soil N treatments, respectively. Foliar 15N atom percent excess and foliar N content values of P2b-2R inoculated Seedlings were not significantly different from controls at any N treatment.
