  • quantitative trait loci analysis for rice seed Vigor during the germination stage
    Journal of Zhejiang University-science B, 2010
Co-Authors: Zhoufei Wang, Jianfei Wang, Yongmei Bao, Fuhua Wang, Hongsheng Zhang
    Abstract:

Seed Vigor is an important characteristic of seed quality, and rice cultivars with strong seed Vigor are desirable in direct-sowing rice production for optimum stand establishment. In the present study, the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of three traits for rice seed Vigor during the germination stage, including germination rate, final germination percentage, and germination index, were investigated using one recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between japonica Daguandao and indica IR28, and using the multiple interval mapping (MIM) approach. The results show that indica rice presented stronger seed Vigor during the germination stage than japonica rice. A total of ten QTLs, and at least five novel alleles, were detected to control rice seed Vigor, and the amount of variation (R 2) explained by an individual QTL ranged from 7.5% to 68.5%, with three major QTLs with R 2>20%. Most of the QTLs detected here are likely to coincide with QTLs for seed weight, seed size, or seed dormancy, suggesting that the rice seed Vigor might be correlated with seed weight, seed size, and seed dormancy. At least five QTLs are novel alleles with no previous reports of seed Vigor genes in rice, and those major or minor QTLs could be used to significantly improve the seed Vigor by marker-assisted selection (MAS) in rice.

  • relationships between changes of kernel nutritive components and seed Vigor during development stages of f1 seeds of sh2 sweet corn
    Journal of Zhejiang University-science B, 2008
Co-Authors: J. Hu, Zhoufei Wang, Xinxian Huang, Xianju Wang, Yajing Guan
    Abstract:

The changes of kernel nutritive components and seed Vigor in F1 seeds of sh 2 sweet corn during seed development stage were investigated and the relationships between them were analyzed by time series regression (TSR) analysis. The results show that total soluble sugar and reducing sugar contents gradually declined, while starch and soluble protein contents increased throughout the seed development stages. Germination percentage, energy of germination, germination index and Vigor index gradually increased along with seed development and reached the highest levels at 38 d after pollination (DAP). The TSR showed that, during 14 to 42 DAP, total soluble sugar content was independent of the Vigor parameters determined in present experiment, while the reducing sugar content had a significant effect on seed Vigor. TSR equations between seed reducing sugar and seed Vigor were also developed. There were negative correlations between the seed reducing sugar content and the germination percentage, energy of germination, germination index and Vigor index, respectively. It is suggested that the seed germination, energy of germination, germination index and Vigor index could be predicted by the content of reducing sugar in sweet corn seeds during seed development stages.

  • seed priming improves seedling Vigor and yield of few vegetable crops
International journal of Bio-resource and Stress Management, 2011
Co-Authors: Ratikanta Maiti, P Vidyasagar, Dasari Rajkumar, A Ramaswamy, Humberto Gonzalez Rodriguez
    Abstract:

Seed priming is a useful technique for enhancing seed Vigor, and thereby, improving overall germination and seedling development in crop species. In tomato variety Gem, germination percentage, early flowering, plant height and leaf length were increased in response to hydro-priming-2 treatment. In okra and onion, seedling Vigor was increased in osmo-priming. In case of watermelon, halo-priming and osmo-priming increased seedling Vigor. In case of chilli, halo-priming increased seedling Vigor. With respect to sponge gourd, osmo-priming increased seedling Vigor. In case of ridge gourd, halo-priming increased seedling Vigor. In general it is observed that the yield is increased in case tomato, chilli, and okra apart from seedling Vigor. Most of the cop's primed seeds have longevity up to 3 months from the dated of priming. The results suggest that primed seeds can be store up to 3 months only after which germination percentage decreases sharply. As the longevity of primed seeds is short, the priming technique may be used in increasing seed production of foundation seeds and breeders seeds. In addition, seed priming could improve seedling Vigor in seedling nursery.

  • time series regression analysis between changes in kernel size and seed Vigor during developmental stage of sh2 sweet corn zea mays l seeds
    Scientia Horticulturae, 2013
    Co-Authors: Y J Guan, J. Hu, J. C. Wang, Zhen Wang, A Knapp
    Abstract:

Abstract High Vigor sweet corn seeds have higher yield potential than low Vigor seeds. Relationships between kernel size and seed Vigor during caryopsis development of three sh2 sweet corn (Zea mays L.) cultivars were analyzed by time series regression (TSR) analysis method. The pattern of kernel development among the three cultivars was similar and the length, width, thickness, volume, fresh weight and dry weight of the seeds reached their highest values at 30, 26, 18, 26, 26 and 38 days after pollination (DAP), respectively. Meanwhile, germination percentage (GP), germination energy (GE), germination index (GI) and Vigor index (VI) gradually increased and reached their highest levels at 38 DAP. The TSR analysis indicated that seed dry weight affected seed Vigor more significantly than other kernel size parameters did and was positively correlated with GP, GE, GI and VI. The results suggested that sh2 sweet corn seed Vigor in different seed developmental stages could be predicted by seed dry weight.
