    Abstract:

    One negative consequence related to poor future planned behaviour is chronic procrastination, the purposive and frequent delay in beginning or completing a task to the point of experiencing subjective discomfort. Although shown to be associated to affective, behavioral, and cognitive characteristics reflecting more than inefficient time management, the concept of procrastination remains closely related to meeting deadlines within a specific timeframe. Procrastination can be considered as a consequence of temporal Self-Regulation Failure that reflects a disjunction between past, present and future time perspectives. Despite the obvious importance of time to procrastination, little research has examined this important relationship although the temporal component seems to be a key defining concept of procrastination. But, what do we know about this complex tendency? What is the relationship between procrastination and time perspective? In this chapter the principal characteristics notes of procrastination (concept and definition, measure and some correlates) and the results of recent research related to procrastination and time perspective were presented.

    Abstract:

    Effects of cognitive load, objective self-awareness and time limits on the Self-Regulation of performance speed and accuracy were investigated between procrastinators and non-procrastinators. In experiment 1 chronic procrastinators completed fewer items (slow speed) and made more errors (less accuracy) than non-procrastinators under high but not low cognitive load conditions when the time span was limited and brief. In experiment 2 chronic procrastinators performed slower than non-procrastinators under a 2 second, but not under no limit, 1 second, or 4 second time limit conditions. Chronic procrastinators compared to non-procrastinators also performed more slowly and made more performance errors under objective self-awareness conditions regardless of the length of time. These experiments indicate that chronic procrastinators regulate ineffectively their performance speed and accuracy when they ‘work under pressure’ (defined by high cognitive load, objective self-awareness, and imposed time limitations).     Over the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in using the tools and methods of cognitive neuroscience to better understand Self-Regulation Failure. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the emerging literature on the cognitive neuroscience of ego depletion with an emphasis on putative mechanisms. We begin with a brief overview of cognitive neuroscience methods and how they may be used to study Self-Regulation and ego depletion. We then examine current theories and models of how psychological processes relevant to Self-Regulation (eg, control and reward) may be mapped onto brain systems. Finally, we review the extant literature on the brain basis of ego depletion and discuss how findings from this growing body of research may illuminate the mechanisms of ego depletion.

Self-Regulation can be undermined by Failures to transcend overwhelming temptations, negative moods and resource depletion, and when minor lapses in self-control snowball into self-regulatory collapse. Cognitive neuroscience research suggests that successful Self-Regulation is dependent on top-down control from the prefrontal cortex over subcortical regions involved in reward and emotion. We highlight recent neuroimaging research on self-regulatory Failure, the findings of which support a balance model of Self-Regulation whereby self-regulatory Failure occurs whenever the balance is tipped in favor of subcortical areas, either due to particularly strong impulses or when prefrontal function itself is impaired. Such a model is consistent with recent findings in the cognitive neuroscience of addictive behavior, emotion regulation and decision-making.

Sirois et al., Cogent Psychology (2015) Abstract: Despite a growing body of research on the consequences of procrastination for health and well-being, there is little research focused on testing or explaining the potential links between procrastination and sleep quality. Using the procrastination-health model as our guiding conceptual lens, we addressed this gap by examining how and why trait procrastination may be linked to various dimensions of sleep quality across two student samples. In Study 1, procrastination was associated with feeling unrested, but not with sleep disturbance frequency, in a sample of Greek undergraduate students (N = 141). In Study 2, bootstrapping analysis of the indirect efects of procrastination on an index of sleep quality through perceived stress in a sample of Canadian students (N = 339) was signiicant, supporting an extended procrastination-health model view of how chronic Self-Regulation Failure may compromise sleep quality. Given the potential for dynamic and reciprocal relations among procrastination, stress, and sleep quality, suggested by the current and other research, the ways in which procrastination may contribute to and be inluenced by poor sleep quality warrant further investigation. For over a decade, her research has examined how and why procrastination is related to health and well-being outcomes, and how stress and emotions play a role in procrastination and its consequences. The research in this paper applies her procrastinationhealth model to sleep quality. Wendelien van Eerde is an associate professor at the University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Business School). Her research interests involve work motivation, with a speciic focus on timerelated issues such as planning, procrastination, and time management. Maria Ioanna Argiropoulou is a Clinical Psychologist and Cognitive and Behavioural Therapist, and president of the Association of Clinical Psychologists of Greece. Her research has focused on understanding the volitional breakdown that characterizes procrastination and its consequences for well-being. PUBLIC INTEREST STATEMENT Procrastination is a common and problematic behavior that may confer risk for poor health. The purpose of our research was to extend previous research demonstrating that the stress associated with trait or chronic procrastination accounts for the links with poor health by examining if procrastination was also a risk for poor sleep. We therefore tested a model suggesting that people who habitually procrastinate would have a poor quality of sleep and that their higher levels of stress might explain this association. Our analyses across two student samples supported this hypothesis. We found that chronic procrastinators reported having poor sleep quality, including feeling bad after waking up, having more diiculty staying awake during the day, sleeping less hours at night, and needing medication to help them sleep. The results also supported our proposed model which suggests that higher levels of stress experienced by procrastinators may contribute to their sleep diiculties

    Recent theory suggests that trait procrastination is a form of temporal Self-Regulation Failure that reflects a disjunction between the present and future self. Yet research to date is sparse and inconsistent regarding the nature of the associations of procrastination with time perspective. The current study aimed to meta-analytically summarize the evidence to date to address the question of how procrastination is linked to future and present time perspective, and to test whether stress and positive affect explained the link between procrastination and future time perspective. A search of the available literature yielded six published studies and three unpublished studies, which were combined with five unpublished data sets for a total of 14 samples with 4312 participants. The meta-analysis revealed that procrastination had a moderate and significant negative association with future time perspective, and a small but significant positive association with present time perspective. Mediation analyses across two of the samples found that high stress and low positive affect explained in part the association between procrastination and future time perspective. Overall, these findings support the notion that procrastinators focus less on the future and highlight the dynamic interrelations of affect and cognition that underlie procrastinators' intertemporal choices.     Procrastination is a common and pervasive problem associated with a range of negative outcomes across a variety of life domains that often occurs when people are faced with tasks that are seen as aversive. In this paper, we argue that as a form of Self-Regulation Failure, procrastination has a great deal to do with short-term mood repair and emotion regulation. Moreover, we contend that a temporal understanding of self and the mood-regulating processes involved in goal pursuit is particularly important in understanding procrastination, because the consequences of procrastination are typically borne by the future self. After summarizing the research on the priority of short-term mood regulation in procrastination, we then draw the connection between the focus on short-term mood repair and the temporal disjunction between present and future selves. We present research that exemplifies these intra-personal processes in understanding temporal notions of self characterized by procrastination, and then link these processes to the negative consequences of procrastination for health and well-being. We conclude with a discussion of possible avenues for future research to provide further insights into how temporal views of the self are linked to the dynamics of mood regulation over time in the context of procrastination.

    Effective Self-Regulation is an important key to successful functioning in many spheres, and failed Self-Regulation may be centrally conducive to substance abuse and addiction. The program of research summarized here indicates that Self-Regulation operates as a limited resource, akin to strength or energy, especially insofar as it becomes depleted after use-leaving the depleted self subsequently vulnerable to impulsive and undercontrolled behaviors (including increased consumption of alcohol). The self's resources, which are also used for decision-making and active responding, can be replenished by rest and positive emotions.
