    Abstract:

    This paper describes a methodology to provide robots with capability of integrative multimedia understanding centered in natural language understanding (NLU) and its recent application to cross-media operation between linguistic and pictorial representations such as town maps and animations of robotic action. The core of the methodology is based on the mental image directed Semantic Theory (MIDST). MIDST is intended to simulate omnisensory mental imagery in human and to afford a knowledge representation system in order for integrative management of knowledge subjective to cognitive mechanisms of intelligent entities such as humans and robots based on a mental image model and its representation in the formal language Lmd. At present stage, the developed NLU system is still experimental with a small vocabulary (about 100 words) but can perform human-like cross-media operation as well as expected.

    Abstract:

    In artificial or robotic imitation, it is extremely difficult for an artifact to understand what in human demonstration is significant or not because there are too many things to attend to as it is. The Mental Image Directed Semantic Theory (MIDST) has proposed an omnisensory mental image model and its description language Lmd intended to facilitate intuitive human- artifact interaction such that happens between non-expert people and home robots. This paper presents a brief sketch of Lmd and a theoretical consideration on artificial imitation of human action driven by human suggestion interpreted in Lmd, controlling the artificial attention mechanism efficiently.

This language can be used for intermediate knowledge representation of multimedia contents and has been applied to an integrated multimedia understanding system IMAGES-M. This paper presents brief sketches of L/sub md/ and IMAGES-M and focuses on bi-directional cross-media translation between human motions and texts by IMAGES-M.

    The authors have developed a syntactic and Semantic HPSG analysis system based on Mental-Image Directed Semantic Theory (MIDST). While conventional HPSG and JPSG parsers are based on situation Semantics, MIDST provides a representation with deeper meaning for natural language by referring to the mental images evoked. Semantic analysis systems based on MIDST, however, have to date employed dependency grammar, requiring word meaning to be represented in two parts. HPSG describes such meanings uniformly, allowing for analysis systems with wide coverage. The proposed system has been developed using common analysis engine for both English and Japanese, requiring only the change of resources such as lexical entries and grammar rules. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.   • A Semantic Theory for ML Higher-Order Concurrency Primitives

    Abstract:

    We present a Semantic Theory for concurrent, functional and imperative programming languages that consists mainly in a static Semantics together with a dynamic Semantics. The static Semantics is inspired by the type and effect discipline. More precisely, we present a generalization of this discipline in order to deal with concurrency. The generalization consists in an inference type system that propagates the communication effects that result from channel creation, sending, and receiving. Hence, the static evaluation of an expression in our type system yields as a result not only the principal type, but also all the minimal communication effects. The dynamic Semantics presented is denotational. It is based on an extension of the acceptance trees model. The main novelties of the model described are its construction and its expressiveness. The construction is not classical and relies on an established dependency between the static and the dynamic spaces. The dynamic spaces are typed according to the hierarchy laid down by the static spaces. The dynamic Semantic domains are then generated in a compositional and systematic way thanks to an induction on the static information. A significant advantage of this method is that it provides a Semantic treatment for polymorphism at the dynamic level by handling suitably free type and effect algebras. The expressiveness of the model is exemplified by the fact that it provides a Semantics for communication, value-passing, return of results, dynamic creation of channels and processes, sequencing, and higher-order objects.

    Abstract:

    In this paper we present a Semantic Theory for Concurrent ML. It consists of a new effect-based type system and a denotational model. The new type system is based on an extension of the type and effect discipline. In addition to the automatic reconstruction of usual principal types, it computes also the minimal communication effects. The dynamic Semantics developed in this paper is denotational. It is based on an accommodation of the Hennessy's acceptance-trees model for handling polymorphism, communication, value-passing, process and functional abstractions and higher order objects. In order to avoid some limitations due to the domain Theory, the denotational model is made dependent on the static Semantics. Hence, the dynamic domains are typed by the static values. The dynamic Semantic evaluation of CML constructs is then expressed using dependent types in the meta-language.

    Abstract:

    Computerized intelligent systems should be more human-friendly considering rapid increase of aged societies, floods of multimedia information over the WWW and development of robots for practical use. Even for people without any physical handicap, it is not always easy to communicate with each other comprehensively by limited information media. Not only for the cases between humans but also for humans and robots, employment of another information medium is very helpful and therefore cross-media translation is very important during such a media-limited communication. Mental image directed Semantic Theory (MIDST) has proposed a cognitively motivated methodology for formalizing spatio-temporal relationships conceptualized in natural language. This paper presents the method and the experiment of cross-media translation based on MIDST, where natural language texts about static positional relations of physical objects are systematically interpreted into 2D pictures and vice versa.
