  • Craniosacral therapy as a relaxation method for hyperreactivity in a child with Sensory Integration Disorder – a case report
    Medical Communications Sp. z o.o., 2017
Co-Authors: Katarzyna Strojek, Magdalena Weber-rajek, Agnieszka Radzimińska
    Abstract:

Impaired Sensory processing, the so-called Sensory Integration Disorder, occurs when the brain is unable to correctly process the stimuli coming from the internal and the external environment. Proper Sensory Integration allows the child for normal everyday functioning (learning, playing, resting), whereas children with impaired Sensory Integration often lack the psycho-affective balance. They suffer from psychosomatic Disorders, which may be caused by e.g. stress due to peer competition at school. Children affected by this Disorder need relaxation to regain the balance necessary for proper physical and mental development. The aim of the study is to assess the therapeutic outcomes in a 7-year-old girl diagnosed with vestibular, tactile and proprioceptive deficits. Craniosacral therapy and somatoSensory Integration method were used. Relaxation therapy had beneficial effects on child’s development, behaviour and the manner of communication with the environment. The hyperesthesia sites, which were present before the therapy, resolved. Previously reported self-aggressive behaviours are no longer observed. Furthermore, the child’s independence, which is crucial for the psychosocial development, also increased during the therapy

Jest to metoda, w ktorej wykorzystuje sie roznorodne dzialania wspomagające rozwoj dziecka. Dysfunkcje integracji Sensorycznej dotyczą nieprawidlowości w zakresie przetwarzania bodźcow Sensorycznych w obrebie nastepujących systemow: czuciowego (dotykowego i proprioceptywnego), przedsionkowego, sluchowego, wzrokowego, wechowego i smakowego. • Sensory Integration, Sensory Processing, and Sensory Modulation Disorders: Putative Functional Neuroanatomic Underpinnings
    The Cerebellum, 2011
Co-Authors: Leonard F. Koziol, Deborah Ely Budding, Dana Chidekel
    Abstract:

This paper examines conditions that have variously been called Sensory Integration Disorder, Sensory processing Disorder, and Sensory modulation Disorder (SID/SPD/SMD). As these conditions lack readily and consistently agreed-upon operational definitions, there has been confusion as to how these Disorders are conceptualized. Rather than addressing various diagnostic controversies, we will instead focus upon explaining the symptoms that are believed to characterize these Disorders. First, to clarify the overall context within which to view symptoms, we summarize a paradigm of adaptation characterized by continuous sensorimotor interaction with the environment. Next, we review a dual-tiered, integrated model of brain function in order to establish neuroanatomic underpinnings with which to conceptualize the symptom presentations. Generally accepted functions of the neocortex, basal ganglia, and cerebellum are described to illustrate how interactions between these brain regions generate both adaptive and pathological symptoms and behaviors. We then examine the symptoms of SID/SPD/SMD within this interactive model and in relation to their impact upon the development of inhibitory control, working memory, academic skill development, and behavioral automation. We present likely etiologies for these symptoms, not only as they drive neurodevelopmental pathologies but also as they can be understood as variations in the development of neural networks.

  • Retention of autism spectrum Disorder diagnosis: The role of co-occurring conditions in males and females.

    Abstract:

This study examined associations between ASD diagnosis retention and non-ASD co-occurring conditions (CoCs) by child sex. The sample included 7077 males and 1487 females who had an ASD diagnosis documented in their school or health records in a population-based ASD surveillance system for 8-year-old children. ASD diagnosis retention status was determined when an initial ASD diagnosis was not later ruled out by a community professional. We found that ASD diagnosis remains fairly stable, with only 9% of children who had an initial documented ASD diagnosis later being ruled-out. Although most of the associations between the ASD diagnosis retention status and CoCs are similar in both sexes, the co-occurrence of developmental diagnoses (e.g., intellectual disability or Sensory Integration Disorder) was predictive of ASD diagnostic changes in males, whereas the co-occurrence of specific developmental (e.g., personal/social delay) and neurological diagnosis (e.g., epilepsy) was associated with ASD diagnostic change in females. More ASD-related evaluations and less ASD-related impairment were associated with later ASD rule outs in both sexes. Our findings highlight that CoCs can complicate the diagnostic picture and lead to an increased likelihood of ambiguity in ASD diagnosis. Using sensitive and appropriate measures in clinical practice is necessary for differential diagnosis, particularly when there are co-occurring developmental conditions.
