A Feasibility Study of an Agile and Data-Centric Method for Prototyping Services Based on Open Transport Data

Government institutions, municipalities, private companies and entrepreneurs are among the stakeholders either having visions of new open data-based Services, or just looking for new ideas on potential innovations based on open data. It is, however, in both cases, often unclear to the Service Developers how the open data actually can be utilized. A main reason is that the data needs to be retrieved from multiple sources, understood, quality checked and processed. While gaining insights on possible Services that can be created on the top of open data, a Service Developer has to undergo an iterative “trying and failing” exercise of Service prototyping. In order to be practically feasible, such a process needs to be agile and efficient. Open data from the transport sector is in this study particularly focused on and used as a case. The open transport data are characterized by many challenges common for open data in general, but also a few specific ones. One of those challenges is the need for combining (often real-time) data from rather many sources in order to create a new Service. This paper is an extension of our earlier research, which introduced a novel data-centric and agile approach to early Service prototyping based on open transport data. In particular, we present a refinement of the initial approach and its evaluation in a significantly extended trial and discussion about the lessons learned from it.

COMPSAC - WS-TemporalPolicy: A WS-Policy Extension for Describing Service Properties with Time Constraints

Functional properties are usually static, whereas non-functional properties are often dynamic and thus vary over time. To describe properties with time constraints, the paper introduces WS-TemporalPolicy. WS-TemporalPolicy empowers a Service Developer to attach a validity period to the properties described in a WS-policy. The generation, validation, storage and retrieval, and deployment process of temporal policies is supported by the Temporal Policy Runtime Environment. Implementation issues and two use cases are presented to illustrate the use of temporal policies.

It is necessary to make Service Developer's best endeavors to provide these Services. In this paper, we propose a novel XML-based sensor data stream processing middleware called UbiCore (Ubiquitous Core) which helps Service Developer to make ubiquitous Service easily. UbiCore manages scattered diverse sensors, collects data from sensors, processes collected sensor data, and automatically delivers the processed results to the related back-end applications. We can save the developing cost of ubiquitous Service by using the proposed middleware.

Future Generation Computer Systems, 2016Co-Authors: Netsanet Haile, Jorn AltmannAbstract:In order to benefit from operating an IT Service platform (e.g., SaaS platform), platform providers need to find a way to keep their existing users and application Services active sources of value. However, the understanding of how to achieve that is limited due to the newness of this kind of business. This paper investigates whether all stakeholders of the platform ecosystem can generate sufficient value when participating in the platform. As stakeholders, we consider application Service users, Service Developers, and Service platform providers. We also analyse the interrelationship between these stakeholders. The analysis outcome is a value creation model that allows the calculation of the stakeholders' values. The model also helps inferring the relative impact of different factors on the evolution of values of the software Service platform stakeholders. Our simulation results confirm that all stakeholders of a Service platform mainly benefit from a growing installed base of application users. However, in a mature market, a large Service variety mainly benefits the Service platform provider, while the other stakeholders obtain a reduced increase in their benefits. In particular, the utility growth of application users becomes constrained as the benefit from new connections with other users decreases and the number of new Services used decreases. Similarly, the revenue of Service Developer decreases, making Service development less profitable. Therefore, we can state that not only a large fraction of the value creation goes to the platform provider but also that the software Service ecosystem can collapse, if no mutually beneficial pricing of Services is implemented.
