As a case study, the paper reports on an on-going project on the design and development of a pass-through authentication web-services for on-line electronic payment applications. This is a first step towards an electronic payment web-service.

  • A JESS-enabled context elicitation system for providing context-aware Web services

    Abstract:

    Providing context-aware Web services is an adaptive process of delivering contextually matched Web services to meet service requesters' needs. We define the term "context" from two perspectives: one from service requesters; and the other from Web services. From the former perspective, context is defined as the surrounding environment affecting requesters' services discovery and access, such as requesters' preferences, locations, activities, and accessible network and devices. From the latter perspective, context is defined as the surrounding environment affecting Web services delivery and execution, such as networks and protocols for service binding, devices and platforms for service execution, and so on. This paper presents a Java Expert System Shell (JESS)-enabled context elicitation system featuring an ontology-based context model that formally describes and acquires contextual information pertaining to service requesters and Web services. Based on the context elicitation system, we present a context-aware services-oriented architecture for providing context-aware Web service request, publication, and discovery. Implementation details of the context elicitation system and the evaluation results of context-aware service provision are also reported. ?? 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Abstract:

    Web service composition has become a key area of research in the services oriented architecture (SOA) community. The idea of using AI planner to compose Web services has been suggested in a lot of papers. Since the different application domains and the constraint of precondition that AI planners have, none of the existing planner can solve this problem, perfectly. In this paper, we present an algorithm that translates Web service composition problem to AI planning problems, and using Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL) to describe the problem which is supported by most of AI planners. The present paper also describes the architecture and several key procedures of the translating algorithm.

    Accepting recent proposals to supporting dependable e-health enterprise systems via the adoption of emerging autonomic grid computing and services-oriented architecture (SOA); this paper presents the motivations for a novel semantics/knowledge plane for a serviceoriented e-health middleware and applications. The paper starts by a detailed description of a developed sensor and actuator framework and overlay. This will be followed by, and illustrated using a remote healthcare monitoring scenario. A case-study of pregnancy monitoring is used to illustrate the design and usability of such a grid overlay. Finally, the paper concludes with general remarks and a statement of further work.     Abstract:

    Effective and affordable business process integration is a key concern in the finance industry. A large German joint-use centre, supplying services to 237 individual savings banks, enhanced the integration capabilities of its core banking system, consisting of more than 500 complex functions, through aggressive use of Web services. Advanced requirements such as heterogeneous client environment, sub-second response times, 300% traffic growth, and interface complexity did challenge today's Web services implementations. To achieve true interoperability between Microsoft (MS) Office™/.NET™ and Java™, and to implement more than 500 Web service providers in a short time frame were two of the most important issues that had to be solved. The current, second release of this solution complies with the Web services Interoperability (WS-I) Basic Profile 1.0. Leveraging the Basic Profile reduced the development and testing efforts significantly. This report discusses the rationale behind the decision for Web services, and gives an architectural overview of the integration approach. Furthermore, it features the lessons learned and best practices identified during the design, implementation and rollout of the solution.

    The advanced requirements of this system, e.g. heterogeneous client environment, sub-second response times, 300% traffic growth, and interface complexity, challenged today’s Web services implementations. To achieve true interoperability between MS Office XP/.NET and the Java world and to design an SOAP envelope compression scheme were two of the most important issues that had to be solved. This paper discusses the rationale behind Sparkassen Informatik’s decision for Web services, and gives an architectural overview of the integration approach. Furthermore, it features the lessons learned during the implementation of this enterprise–scale solution.
