  • Religijos įtaka politikos formavimo procesuose: lytinio švietimo Lietuvoje atvejis
'Kaunas University of Technology (KTU)', 2020
    Co-Authors: Nalivaikė Augustė
    Abstract:

The Lithuanian Ministry of Education adopted the Sexual Education and preparation for a family life policy in 2016. Policy formulation stage became the centreof the conflict between secular reproductive health and sex Education activists and religious civil society organizations as well as Lithuanian Catholic Church which exerts its informal political power and utilizes institutional opportunity structures in various stages of policy-making. These groups clashed not only in the chambers of the Lithuanian Parliament but also in the media. Competing discourses were created and maintained in various public spaces. Non-governmental human rights organizations have tried to counter the discourse of oppositional conservative and religious political actors and actively participated in policy formulation. However, these attempts did not prevent the Ministry of Education from adopting a family and abstinence-oriented sex Education, which favours specificreligious values. This paper seeks to understand religious influence in Sexual Education policy formation in Lithuania. I utilize news media articles and anonymous in-depth interviews with various relevant actors involved. This case study also enriches theoretical literature on informal institutions, and institutional opportunity structures concerningreligious actors influence morality policy-making

  • teacher perspectives on abstinence and safe sex Education in south africa
    Sex Education, 2014
    Co-Authors: Dennis Francis, Renee Depalma
    Abstract:

The stakes are high for sex Education in South Africa: it has been estimated that 8.7% of young people live with HIV. Within primarily US and UK contexts, there has been much debate over the relative merits of abstinence-only and comprehensive Sexual Education programmes. These perspectives have largely been presented as irreconcilable, but in-depth interviews with 25 life orientation teachers across the Free State Province of South Africa reveal that teachers may attempt to reconcile aspects of the two into a hybridised perspective. They promote abstinence as the only appropriate choice for young people while recognising the value of some of the broader issues of comprehensive Sexuality such as relationships and safe sex. We attempt to make meaning of this hybridisation and present two arguments: that the specific South African context challenges the idea that these two contradictory positions cannot be mixed and that they might be strategically combined to promote a comprehensive Sexuality Education tha...

  • the effect of comprehensive Sexual Education program on Sexual health knowledge and Sexual attitude among college students in southwest china
Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health, 2015
Co-Authors: Xinli Chi, Skyler T Hawk, Sam Winter, Wim Meeus
    Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a comprehensive Sexual Education program for college students in Southwest China (a) improved Sexual health knowledge in reproduction, contraception, condom use, Sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV; (b) increased accepting attitudes toward lesbian, gay, biSexual, and transSexual individuals; and (c) altered participants' attitudes toward premarital sex and monogamy. The program used diverse teaching methods, providing 6 sessions over a period of 9 weeks about Sexual health knowledge and Sexual attitudes to college students (age 18-26 years) in Southwest China. Sexual health knowledge and Sexual attitudes of 80 comprehensive Sexual Education class students (Education group) and 92 general mental health Education class students (control group) were measured at baseline, the end of course (posttest), and 3 weeks after the end of course (follow-up). There were significant effects of the program on (a) Sexual health knowledge, including reproductive health, contraception, condom use, and HIV/AIDS and (b) positive attitudes toward Sexual minorities, although these changes may require further reinforcement. In contrast, the program did not alter students' attitudes about premarital sex or monogamy. The results are discussed in terms of recommendations of sex Education in China and future directions for research.

  • swedish teenager perceptions of teenage pregnancy abortion Sexual behavior and contraceptive habits a focus group study among 17 year old female high school students
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 2005
Co-Authors: Maria L Ekstrand, Margareta Larsson, Louise Von Essen, Tanja Tyden
    Abstract:

BACKGROUND: Sweden has the highest abortion numbers among the Nordic countries. Since 1995, the abortion rate among teenagers has increased by nearly 50%. We therefore undertook a study where the overall aim was to gain a deeper understanding on which factors female teenagers believe may explain the increasing numbers of teenage abortions. Teenagers' perceptions of teenage pregnancy, abortion, Sexual behavior, and contraceptive habits were investigated. METHODS: Six focus group interviews with 17-year-old Swedish girls were conducted. The interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed by manifest content analysis. RESULTS: Negative attitudes toward teenage pregnancy and supportive attitudes toward abortion were expressed. Risk-taking behaviors such as negligence in contraceptive use and intercourse under the influence of alcohol were suggested as main reasons behind the increasing numbers of abortions among Swedish teenagers. The contemporary, Sexualized, media picture was believed to influence adolescents' Sexual behavior, and liberal attitudes toward casual sex were expressed. Girls were perceived as more obliged than boys in taking responsibility for contraceptive compliance and avoidance of pregnancy. The apprehension that hormonal contraceptives cause negative side-effects was widely spread, and the participants were found to have a somewhat limited knowledge of abortion. The majority were unsatisfied with the quality of Sexual Education provided by the schools. CONCLUSION: Possible reasons for increased abortion numbers among teenagers in Sweden could be liberal attitudes toward casual sex in combination with negligence in contraceptive use, use of alcohol followed by Sexual risk-taking, fear of hormonal contraceptives, and a deterioration of Sexual Education in the schools.
