How are they assembled? In the resulting assemblage, is the notion of borders – understood as state borders – still relevant for the control of individuals and populations moving across the frontiers of the EU? Drawing on empirical observations and with a specific focus on how border control is translated into different social universes, this article seeks to show that practices of control are routinely embedded in a practical sense that informs what controlling borders does and means. This practical sense is itself informed by different professional habitus and work routines involving deterrence and the use of force, interrogation and detention, surveillance of populations on the move and the profiling of (un)trusted travellers. Its strength varies in relation to its Shared Dimension by most of the operators, and is adjusted to the materiality of borders as well as ...

Aliasing in reduced Dimensionality NMR spectra: (3,2)D HNHA and (4,2)D HN(COCA)NH experiments as examples

In this paper we show that aliasing can be introduced in reduced Dimensionality NMR spectra either to decrease the acquisition time or increase the resolution of the experiments without losing information. The gains of introducing aliasing are illustrated with two examples, the (3,2)D H NHA and the (4,2)D HN( COCA) N H experiments. In both cases a reduction of the spectral width of more than 50% was possible.

Cavanaugh’s The Myth of Religious Violence in the light of the mimetic theory of the French-American cultural theorist Rene Girard. Though the two projects are significantly different I argue for their mutual compatibility. Each author is “apologetic” for the Christian revelation, though the presence of theology in “The Myth . . .” is muted or implicit, as in Walter Benjamin’s parable of the puppet and the dwarf. I argue for four areas of specific convergence between Cavanaugh and Girard, arising from a Shared Augustinian, “two Cities” suspicion of the state, and their resistance to the secularising marginalisation of the Judeo-Christian tradition. The notion of martyrdom as a “dramatic” performance is a further Shared Dimension. Finally, I argue that the apparent divergence of their approaches, between an anthropological thesis (Girard’s) and a historical one (Cavanaugh’s) is narrowed when we consider the later work of Girard and its examination of...
