The accompanying online Database Collection, available at http://www.oxfordjournals.org/nar/database/a/, now lists 1230 carefully selected databases covering various aspects of molecular and cell biology. While most data resource descriptions remain very brief, the issue includes several longer papers that highlight recent significant developments in such databases as Pfam, MetaCyc, UniProt, ELM and PDBe. The databases described in the Database Issue and Database Collection, however, are far more than a distinct set of resources; they form a network of connected data, concepts and Shared Technology.     Abstract:

    Voluntary Standard Setting Organizations (SSOs) use a consensus process to create new compatibility standards. Practitioners have suggested that SSOs are increasingly politicized and perhaps incapable of producing timely standards. This article develops a simple model of standard setting committees and tests its predictions using data from the Internet Engineering Task Force, an SSO that produces many of the standards used to run the Internet. The results show that an observed slowdown in standards production between 1993 and 2003 can be linked to distributional conflicts created by the rapid commercialization of the Internet.   • How different types of users develop trust in Technology: A qualitative analysis of the antecedents of active and passive user trust in a Shared Technology

    The aim of this study was to investigate the antecedents of trust in Technology for active users and passive users working with a Shared Technology. According to the prominence-interpretation theory, to assess the trustworthiness of a Technology, a person must first perceive and evaluate elements of the system that includes the Technology. An experimental study was conducted with 54 participants who worked in two-person teams in a multi-task environment with a Shared Technology. Trust in Technology was measured using a trust in Technology questionnaire and antecedents of trust were elicited using an open-ended question. A list of antecedents of trust in Technology was derived using qualitative analysis techniques. The following categories emerged from the antecedent: Technology factors, user factors, and task factors. Similarities and differences between active users and passive user responses, in terms of trust in Technology were discussed.
