    Abstract:

    Abstract There have been increasing concerns about the adverse impacts on the environment caused by cargo movement in international trade. Different stakeholders ranging from shippers and carriers to government bodies and international communities have expressed worries about the environmental impacts brought by Shipping related activities. The pollution and waste created in the Shipping processes have imposed environmental burdens and accelerated resource depletion. The situation is set to worsen in the face of intensifying trade globalization, which has contributed to sustained growth in international Shipping activities. To help protect the environment, many Shipping firms have taken the initiative to find ways to lessen the environmental damage of their operations while enhancing their performance. The objective of this study is to examine the environmental awareness and the environmental measures taken in the Shipping Industry. We propose a conceptual framework for evaluating green Shipping practices and develop several propositions stating the conditions under which Shipping firms would behave in an environmentally responsible manner. We conclude with managerial and policy implications of the conceptual framework to promote green Shipping practices in the Shipping Industry.

    Abstract:

    It is generally accepted that quality management is considered a valuable competitive factor for firms that confers them competitive advantages and enables them to achieve superior performance. Although there have been numerous studies examining general quality management practices and implementation, Industry-specific studies on quality management practices and factors that influence their success in the Shipping Industry are rather few. This study seeks to identify the factors that are critical to successful quality management, and attempts to develop a reliable, empirically tested, and rigorously validated measurement instrument for quality management, for the Shipping Industry. We conducted a large-scale survey of Shipping Industry executives and applied a rigorous research methodology to treat the survey data. We identified four success factors of quality management, which are top management commitment and participation, quality information and performance measurement, employee training and empowerment, and customer focus, and developed a functional instrument to measure quality management in the Shipping Industry. This paper contributes to research by identifying the success factors of quality management, and provides managerial insights on the successful management of quality, in the Shipping Industry.     Abstract:

    Within the contemporary Shipping Industry there is the potential for open registers to act to varying degrees as “regulatory havens”. There are also well-known challenges relating to regulatory enforcement at both port-state and flag-state levels. In this context it is particularly helpful to consider the potential drivers of corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the commercial cargo Shipping Industry. This paper therefore considers three case studies, to explore: supply chain pressures relating to the exercise of CSR; financial drivers of CSR; the role of paternalism in the exercise of CSR; and normative orientations towards CSR in the Shipping Industry. The paper concludes that on the whole, the Shipping Industry is more concerned to focus on the protection of the environment, in conjunction with its CSR policies, than it is to focus on the health and welfare of sea-based employees. Furthermore, it explains the reasons for such prioritization.

    Abstract:

    This article combines data from two separate studies of the Shipping Industry, one on enforcement of new regulations on the use of low-sulphur fuel and one on supply chain influences on ship operators’ health and safety policies and practices. The Shipping Industry is a valuable natural laboratory for the study of patterns of compliance and governance in late modernity because it is characterised both by highly developed polycentric governance structures and by globalising economic processes including vertically disaggregated global value chains, outsourcing and offshoring. Segmented markets have permitted some ‘blue riband’ companies to operate a social license ‘beyond compliance’, and that such social licenses are more extensive in respect of environment policies than in health and safety policies that may be attributed to supply chain influences. Ship operators’ compliance is seen as a combination of instrumental compliance, normative compliance, a taken for granted culture of compliance and corporate policies of labour-force governance. A taken for granted culture of compliance is identified as the main reason for compliance with the new low-sulphur regulations, which are currently (uncharacteristically) subject to only limited enforcement effort.

    As a part of the service sector,Shipping Industry makes considerable contribution to the national economy development.This paper introduces Industry cluster theory to Shipping Industry,puts forward a concept model of Shipping Industry cluster,and establishes an evaluation index system for competitiveness of Shipping Industry cluster with gray relational theory.Furthermore,applications have been made to the world's famous Shipping center,such as the international Shipping center of New York,London,Rotterdam,Hong Kong,Singapore,and Shanghai.The empirical results show that the competitiveness of the Shipping Industry cluster is an important measure indicator for the service environment of international Shipping centers.And the gray relational degree model is effective to evaluate competitiveness of Shipping Industry cluster because the size of gray relational degree directly reflects the degree of competitiveness,which is helpful to improve the service-environment of an international Shipping center.

    In recent years, Shipping Industry clusters in our country present network development trend, and there are complex coopetition-relationships between enterprises in this cluster network. This fact brings the research about the R&D pattern of Shipping Industry clusters a new challenge. We firstly build the multi-level coopetition model of the Shipping Industry cluster network, and then use the Lotka-Volterra model and the Evolution Game model to analyze coopetition-relationships between enterprises in this network and the interaction relationship between the coopetition-relationships and the R&D pattern, and finally put forward the countermeasures and suggestions about how to improve the R&D pattern of the Shipping Industry cluster network in our country.
