    Abstract:

    Waste management is a great concern faced by many nations in the world today. On the streets of major cities, it has become almost common to find waste which poses health hazards and other concerns to its communities and inhabitants. This project focuses on the use of smart systems and the Internet of Things (IOT), to provide an efficient and effective approach to waste management. This project designed and manufactured a prototype of a solar- powered, self-compacting smart bin with a server-Side monitoring Application. The prototype smart bin is capable of monitoring internal rubbish levels, compact it, freeing approximately 25 percent of the space with each compaction. The bin also monitors total weight and is capable of sending all this information to a secure server-Side Application. The accompanying web Application monitors the state of each smart bin and proposes optimal routes for pick up. This approach will contribute to a smart and efficient waste disposal, improving the cites waste management.

A distributed transaction can employ any combination of the transports that the currently installed plug-ins provide. Two-phase commit (logging and failure recovery included) runs over any such combination of transports.     Abstract:

    The current World Wide Web service model treats all requests equivalently, both while being processed by servers and while being transmitted over the network. For some uses, such as Web prefetching or multiple priority schemes, different levels of service are desirable. This paper presents three simple, server-Side, Application-level mechanisms (limiting process pool size, lowering process priorities, limiting transmission rate) to provide two different levels of Web service (regular and low priority). We evaluated the performance of these mechanisms under combinations of two foreground workloads (light and heavy) and two levels of available network bandwidth (10 Mb/s and 100 Mb/s). Our experiments show that even with background traffic sufficient to saturate the network, foreground performance is reduced by at most 4–17%. Thus, our user-level mechanisms can effectively provide different service classes even in the absence of operating system and network support.

    Abstract:

    The variation of immune cell activities over time is an immanent property of the human immune system, as can be measured by the stimulated secretion of cytokines in cell cultures. However, inter-individual variability is conSiderably higher. Especially the latter is the major reason why it has not been possible to establish international standard values for cytokines as was possible for other parameters, such as leukocyte sub-population numbers. In this trial, a highly standardized whole-blood culture model (TrueCulture®), developed to characterise drug effects on cells of the human immune system in clinical trials, was used to analyse cytokine patterns in the blood samples of 12 healthy subjects over a period of one month. After an overnight fast, 12 healthy subjects donated blood three times a week on three consecutive days over a period of 4 weeks. TruCulture® blood collection and whole-blood culture systems were used to measure whole-blood leukocyte stimulation. The levels of IL-2, IL-5, IL-13, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IFNγ, and MCP-1 in the culture supernatants were quantified by sandwich ELISA. The pattern of cytokine concentrations in the supernatants of the stimulated whole-blood cultures was highly individual, but conSiderably stable over the whole observation period of 4 weeks. By using TruCulture® it seems feasible to determine subject-specific cytokine reference patterns, for example under healthy conditions, or before starting an experimental treatment, e.g. during a clinical trial, against which changes in the behaviour of the immune system can be detected more accurately in future.
