  • empirical modeling of the impacts of faults on water cooled chiller power consumption for use in building simulation programs
    Applied Thermal Engineering, 2016
Co-Authors: Howard Cheung, James E Braun
    Abstract:

Abstract Empirical models of four chiller faults that can be applied within existing building models to study overall impacts are developed in this paper. The faults include overcharging, excess oil, non-condensables in refrigerant and water-Side Condenser fouling. A single generalized model structured was developed for these faults that forces predicted fault impacts to be zero with no fault and increase with increasing fault level. The models were trained and tested using available laboratory data for a water-cooled centrifugal chiller where all four faults were artificially introduced. The fault model behavior was studied and then they were integrated in hospital models from DOE commercial reference building models (Deru et al., 2011) and simulations were performed in different climates. The simulation results showed maximum increases of building electricity consumption, electricity peak demand and water consumption of the hospitals due to faults of 4.7%, 7.8% and 1.8% respectively. The fault impacts were found to be more severe in hotter and more humid climates.

  • Experimental and numerical investigation of a cross flow air-to-water heat pipe-based heat exchanger used in waste heat recovery
    'Elsevier BV', 2016
    Co-Authors: Ramos J, Chong A, Jouhara H
    Abstract:

This paper applies CFD modelling and numerical calculations to predict the thermal performance of a cross flow heat pipe based heat exchanger. The heat exchanger under study transfers heat from air to water and it is equipped with six water-charged wickless heat pipes, with a single-pass flow pattern on the air Side (evaporator) and two flow passes on the water Side (Condenser). For the purpose of CFD modelling, the heat pipes were conSidered as solid devices of a known thermal conductivity which was estimated by experiments conducted on the exact same heat pipe configuration under an entire testing range. The CFD results were compared with the experimental and the numerical results and it was found that the modelling predictions are within 10% of the experimental results. The European Development Fund and Econotherm (UK) Limited

  • IDENTIFIKASI MENURUNNYA KERJA Condenser PADA AUXILIARY BOILER DI ATAS KAPAL MV. CTP FORTUNE
    2019
    Co-Authors: Dodik, Cahyo Nugroho
    Abstract:

ABSTRACT Gabriel Damasus Bintang Prakarsa, NIT.51145316.T, 2018, “Identification of Condenser System Failure to Fresh Water Consumption of Auxiliary Boiler in MV. Kartini Samudra”, Diploma IV, Engineering, Semarang Merchant Marine Polytechnic, Academic Adviser: (I) F.Pambudi Widiatmaka, ST, MT., M.Mar.E., (II) Capt. Hadi Supriyono MM, M.Mar. Condenser is one kind of auxiliary engines on the ship that serves to convert a substance in the form of steam into water. While the cascade tank is a storage equipment to contain the water condensed from the steam. Both of them are auxiliary engines that have important functions in machining processes that produce hot steam on the ship. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with Fishbone Analysis approach, which aims to find the main causes of failure of the Condenser working system and its impact on freshwater auxiliary boiler consumption. Then the method is combined with the Fault Tree Analysis method to determine the solutions of the most fundamental problems (Basic Event) obtained. This study found that the main causes of the failure of the Condenser working system are 1) the permeability between the cooling chamber and the cooled substance on the Condenser due to inappropriate gaskets; 2) a blockage on the tube Side in the Condenser due to the lack of treatment on the sea chest, and 3) the damage to the inlet valve caused by the lack of maintenance and control. Those have an impact on increased freshwater consumption of auxiliary boiler internally. The Plan Maintenance System (PMS) is one of the most effective ways of performing machining maintenance. Good coordination between the company and the ship’s crew is required to obtain a response to the availability of spare parts required in the maintenance of machinery on the ship. Water kettle examination also needs to be done regularly so that the water quality of the kettle is maintained and the utility of the machine can last longer
