    Abstract:

    Nine botanicals were evaluated for their effectiveness against Sitophilus oryzae infesting sorghum. The plant products viz., sweet flag powder, custard apple seed powder and neem seed kernel powder were the most effective. The treatments of neem leaf powder and lakke leaf powder were also found effective, while kharanja leaf powder, adsali leaf powder, tulsi leaf powder and turmeric powder were found to be least effective. All the botanicals gradually lost their effectiveness with increase in the period of grain storage. The per cent weight loss in sorghum treated with various plant products against S. oryzae could reveal that sweet flag powder, custard apple seed powder and neem seed kernel powder were the most effective.

    Fifteen varieties/genotypes were screened against the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae (L.) during 2018–19 at the Biological Control Laboratory and P.G. Research Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Entomology, N. M. College of Agriculture, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari. The varieties GR-7, GNR-7 and IR-28 were observed to show maximum resistance, as indicated by minimum seed damage, weight loss, more germination and less population buildup while, the genotype GNR-4 was the most susceptible.

    Research study on the efficacy of various edible and non-edible oils against rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (Linnaeus) on stored sorghum was carried out during the year 2007-08 and 2008-09 at the Main Sorghum Research Station, Navsari Agricultural University, Surat, Gujarat state. The results of study on per cent grain damage and weight loss of grains treated with various edible and non-edible oil revealed that the least grain damage and weight loss were found in grains treated with groundnut oil 5 ml/ kg of seed and mustard oil 5 ml/ kg of seed against S. oryzae on sorghum.

    Research study on the screening of sorghum genotypes against rice weevil ( Sitophilus oryzae L.) on stored sorghum was carried out during the year 2007-08 and 2008-09 at the Main Sorghum Research Station, Navsari Agricultural University, Surat, Gujarat state. Among twelve sorghum genotypes tested, the rice weevil preferred DJ 6514, SR 666, SR 1905 and SR 2460 genotypes for development as compared to other genotypes. On the basis of growth index and susceptible index, the genotypes SR 770, IS 6566, ICSV 700 and 168 II 108 were found less suitable. Among different varieties the sex ratio (male: female) ranged from 1:0.95 to 1:1.31. The genotype DJ 6514 was most susceptible genotype on the basis of damage, weight loss and population build up. The SR 770 maintained maximum germination per cent.

    Radiant SC12% (Spinetoram) is a new generation of spinosyn group. Evaluated the efficacy of different concentrations of spinosad against adults of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae were studied in the laboratory. The highest effect of different concentrations in laboratory were recorded 55 and 31% adult mortality after 4 days for the two concentrations (1.87 and 0.93 ppm), while they caused 100% mortality of adult after 6 and 8 days respectively, Antioxidant defense components protect insects by scavenging reactive oxygen species, leading to oxidative stress. The present study was investigated the effects of Radiant SC 12%, on the oxidative stress indicator, and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)) activities in Sitophilus oryzae tissues. There were statistically significant increases in SOD and CAT activities in the LC50/48h concentration of Radiant-treated Sitophilus oryzae compared to the control. These results indicated that Radiant causes an increase in oxidative stress and we inferred that increasing oxidative stress induces antioxidant defense mechanisms.

These results indicated that Radiant causes an increase in oxidative stress and we inferred that increasing oxidative stress induces antioxidant defense mechanisms which are represented by consumption of GST.

    The bioagent, Radiant SC12% (Spinetoram) is a commercial reduced-risk pesticide that is naturally derived. Efficacy of five concentrations (1.8, 0.93, 0.46, 0.23 and 0.11ppm) of spinosad against adults of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae was studied under laboratory conditions. Data obtained demonstrated that the highest concentration of the bio-agent Radiant SC 12% (1.87 and 0.93 ppm) achieved the highest mortality percent of adults (55 and 31 %, respectively) after 4 days of treatment and 100 mortality percent for both two concentrations after 6 and 8 days of treatment. Antioxidant defense components protect insects by scavenging reactive oxygen species, leading to oxidative stress. The present study also investigated the effects of Radiant SC 12%, on the oxidative stress indicator, and antioxidant enzymes [superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT)] activities in Sitophilus oryzae tissues. The use of the bio- agent lead to statistically significant increases in SOD and CAT activities after 48h of application as compared to untreated Sitophilus oryzae. These results indicated that Radiant causes a significant increase in oxidative stress, that increasing oxidative stress induces antioxidant defense mechanisms, which lead to mortality action.
