  • Ozone (O3): An Out-of-Order Flash Memory Controller Architecture
    IEEE Transactions on Computers, 2011
Co-Authors: Eyee Hyun Nam, Bryan S. Kim, Hyeonsang Eom, Sang Lyul Min
    Abstract:

Ozone (O3) is a flash memory controller that increases the performance of a flash storage system by executing multiple flash operations out of order. In the O3 flash controller, data dependencies are the only ordering constraints on the execution of multiple flash operations. This allows O3 to exploit the multichip parallelism inherent in flash memory much more effectively than interleaving. The O3 controller also provides a prioritized handling of flash operations, equipping flash management software, such as the FTL (flash translation layer), with control knobs for managing flash operations of different time criticalities. Running a range of workloads on an FPGA implementation showed that the O3 flash controller achieves 3 to 100 percent more throughput than interleaving, with 46 to 88 percent lower response times.

  • modified Slash birnbaum saunders distribution
Hacettepe Journal of Mathematics and Statistics, 2017
Co-Authors: Jimmy Reyes, Filidor Vilca, Diego I Gallardo, Héctor W. Gómez
    Abstract:

In this paper, we introduce an extension for the Birnbaum-Saunders (BS) distribution based on the modified Slash (MS) distribution proposed by [12]. This new family of BS type distributions is obtained by replacing the usual normal distribution with the quotient of two independent random variables, one being a normal distribution in the numerator and the power of a exponential of parameter equal to two at the denominator. The resulting distribution is an extension of the BS distribution that has greater kurtosis values than the usual BS distribution and the Slash Birnbaum-Saunders (SBS) distribution (see [7]). Moments and some properties are derived for the new distribution. Also, we draw inferences by the method of moments and maximum likelihood. A real data application is presented where the model fitting is implemented by using maximum likelihood estimation producing better results than the classic BS model and Slash BS model.

  • Modified Slash Lindley Distribution
Journal of Probability and Statistics, 2017
Co-Authors: Jimmy Reyes, Osvaldo Venegas, Héctor W. Gómez
    Abstract:

In this paper we introduce a new distribution, called the modified Slash Lindley distribution, which can be seen as an extension of the Lindley distribution. We show that this new distribution provides more flexibility in terms of kurtosis and skewness than the Lindley distribution. We derive moments and some basic properties for the new distribution. Moment estimators and maximum likelihood estimators are calculated using numerical procedures. We carry out a simulation study for the maximum likelihood estimators. A fit of the proposed model indicates good performance when compared with other less flexible models.

  • An extension of the Slash-elliptical distribution
Sort-statistics and Operations Research Transactions, 2014
Co-Authors: Mario A. Rojas, Heleno Bolfarine, Héctor W. Gómez
    Abstract:

This paper introduces an extension of the Slash-elliptical distribution. This new distribution is generated as the quotient between two independent random variables, one from the elliptical family (numerator) and the other (denominator) a beta distribution. The resulting Slash-elliptical distribution potentially has a larger kurtosis coefficient than the ordinary Slash-elliptical distribution. We investigate properties of this distribution such as moments and closed expressions for the density function. Moreover, an extension is proposed for the location scale situation. Likelihood equations are derived for this more general version. Results of a real data application reveal that the proposed model performs well, so that it is a viable alternative to replace models with lesser kurtosis flexibility. We also propose a multivariate extension.

  • Response of the soil microbial community and soil nutrient bioavailability to biomass harvesting and reserve tree retention in northern Minnesota aspen-dominated forests.
    Applied Soil Ecology, 2016
    Co-Authors: Tera E. Lewandowski, Jodi A. Forrester, David J. Mladenoff, Anthony W. D'amato, Brian J. Palik
    Abstract:

Abstract Intensive forest biomass harvesting, or the removal of harvesting Slash (woody debris from tree branches and tops) for use as biofuel, has the potential to negatively affect the soil microbial community (SMC) due to loss of carbon and nutrient inputs from the Slash, alteration of the soil microclimate, and increased nutrient leaching. These effects could result in lowered forest productivity and threaten the long-term sustainability of forest management. Retaining organic material post-harvest, including greater amounts of harvesting Slash and live trees, within harvested areas may ameliorate some negative effects of biomass harvesting on soil processes. We evaluated the effects of biomass harvests with reserve tree and Slash retention on the SMC and soil nutrient bioavailability (assessed using plant-root simulator probes) in trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) forests in northern Minnesota during the spring and summer, 1–3 years after harvest. Variable biomass removal levels tested include complete removal (whole tree harvest of boles and branches), complete Slash retention (bole only harvest), and 20% Slash retention (amount suggested by regional biomass harvesting guidelines). Compared to the unharvested control, biomass harvests had no effect on the multivariate SMC composition or microbial biomass, but did result in a 1–4% increase in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal abundance and reduced bacterial stress two and three years after harvest. Additionally, biomass harvesting increased NH4 bioavailability during year one, and reduced NO3 bioavailability during year two when compared to unharvested controls. Among the three biomass harvests with differing levels of Slash removal there were few differences in overall SMC composition, microbial biomass, and soil nutrients; however, the abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, gram positive and actinomycete bacteria were significantly higher in harvested treatments with more Slash retained. These results are specific to single rotation biomass harvesting in aspen stands due to the unique relationships between plants and their associated SMCs, and may not be directly applicable to forest biomass harvesting of other commercial forest tree species, or multiple rotations.
