deformations and pressure distribution on machine tool Slideways
International Journal of Machine Tools & Manufacture, 1997Co-Authors: Huseyi Fidotlidotz, Abdullah Akpola, Ahim H GuzelbeyAbstract:A finite element analysis of machine tool Slideways has been carried out by using two-dimensional slideway models. Models are considered to consist of contact elements at the interface of sliding surfaces. Flat and dovetail types of Slideways are modelled, and pressure distributions and deformations are determined with the use of ANSYS Rev. 5.0A non-linear contact elements. Close correlation of the results obtained from ANSYS with the experimental results given in the literature demonstrates the validity of the models used. Ease of construction of the models and faster solution times seemed to be the advantages of this method. The existing designs can easily be modified if the requirements on the allowable pressure distribution and deformations on the contact surfaces are specified.

effects of surface texture size on the tribological properties of Slideways
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2010Co-Authors: H Ogawa, Shinya Sasaki, Atsushi Korenaga, Koji Miyake, Miki Nakano, T MurakamiAbstract:AbstractThe effects of surface texture on the tribological properties of Slideways were investigated experimentally. The authors designed an experimental apparatus for evaluating textured surfaces using specimens of a practical size (82 mm × 82 mm) considering the Slideways used for machine tools which are one of the application fields for their research. The evaluated textures were dimple and groove textures, and their diameters and widths varied from 50 μm to 1 mm. The textures were processed by sandblasting as it is one of the alternative methods applied in industry. For comparison with the conventional textures, scraped surfaces were also evaluated. The friction coefficient and the film thickness were measured under the conditions of plane contact, and lubricating with the oil to clarify the effects of the textured pattern. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficient of the textured surfaces was smaller than that of the flat surfaces in the mixed lubrication regime. Regarding the mec...

SPECIAL ISSUE PAPER 885 Effects of surface texture size on the tribological properties of Slideways
2009Co-Authors: Shinya Sasaki, Atsushi Korenaga, Miki NakanoAbstract:Abstract: The effects of surface texture on the tribological properties of Slideways were investi-gated experimentally. The authors designed an experimental apparatus for evaluating textured surfaces using specimens of a practical size (82mm × 82mm) considering the Slideways used for machine tools which are one of the application fields for their research. The evaluated textures were dimple and groove textures, and their diameters and widths varied from 50µm to 1mm. The textures were processed by sandblasting as it is one of the alternative methods applied in industry. For comparison with the conventional textures, scraped surfaces were also evaluated. The friction coefficient and the film thickness were measured under the conditions of plane con-tact, and lubricating with the oil to clarify the effects of the textured pattern. The experimental results showed that the friction coefficient of the textured surfaces was smaller than that of the flat surfaces in the mixed lubrication regime. Regarding the mechanisms of friction reduction by texture types, the authors think that the dimples played the role of oil reservoir, and the parallel grooves prevented side leakage of the lubricating oil

basic running test of the cylindrical tracked vehicle with sideways mobility
Intelligent Robots and Systems, 2009Co-Authors: Kenjiro Tadakuma, Riichiro Tadakuma, Keiji Nagatani, Kazuya Yoshida, Aigo Ming, Makoto Shimojo, Karl IagnemmaAbstract:In this paper, the basic running performance of the cylindrical tracked vehicle with sideways mobility is presented. The crawler mechanism is of circular cross-section and has active rolling axes at the center of the circles. Conventional crawler mechanisms can support massive loads, but cannot produce sideways motion. Additionally, previous crawler edges sink undesirably on soft ground, particularly when the vehicle body is subject to a sideways tilt. The proposed design solves these drawbacks by adopting a circular cross-section crawler. A prototype. Basic motion experiments with confirm the novel properties of this mechanism: sideways motion and robustness against edge-sink.

development and characterization of a new instrument for the traceable measurement of areal surface texture
Measurement Science and Technology, 2009Co-Authors: Richard Leach, Claudiu L Giusca, Kazuya NaoiAbstract:Modern manufacturing industry is beginning to benefit greatly from the ability to control the three-dimensional, or areal, structure of a surface. To underpin areal surface manufacturing, a traceable measurement infrastructure is required. In this paper, the development of a new traceable instrument for the measurement of areal surface texture is presented. The instrument uses a two-axis coplanar air-bearing slideway to move the measured surface beneath a stylus probe. The motion of the slideway is measured using linear and angular interferometers. The key to the new instrument is a novel probing system incorporating a cylindrical air-bearing guideway and an electromagnetic system to maintain a constant stylus force on the surface. The deflection of the stylus is measured using a differential plane mirror interferometer thereby minimizing the effect of any error motion in the metrology frame. The uncertainties of the instrument are calculated using a Monte Carlo approach and are evaluated to be 5 nm in the z axis and 16 nm in the x and y axes (all at k = 2). The results are given for the instrument and are compared to results from a traceable profile measuring instrument and a coherence scanning interferometer.
