    Abstract Inadequate and lacking sanitation and wastewater treatment systems can lead to the spreading of diarrhoeal diseases. One contributing factor in the lack of such treatment systems is the lack of economic incentives for stakeholders throughout the service chain. However, the organic fraction of the waste is high in valuable plant nutrients and could be reused in agriculture and as animal feed. For example, grown larvae of the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), make an excellent protein source in animal feed, while the feeding activity of the larvae substantially reduces the dry mass of the treated material. This study examined the effect of black soldier fly larvae on the concentration of pathogenic microorganisms in human faeces and found a 6 log 10 reduction in Salmonella spp. in human faeces in eight days, compared with a 10 reduction in the control. No increased reduction was observed for Enterococcus spp., bacteriophage ΦX174 or Ascaris suum ova.

    Abstract Sustainable sewage Sludge Management is a worldwide issue in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This work developed a new strategy for sewage Sludge treatment involving the integration of hydrothermal treatment (HT) with anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD), particularly on the feasibility of mesophilic AcoD of anaerobically digested Sludge (DS) hydrolysate and waste activated Sludge (WAS). Results show that AcoD of DS hydrolysate from HT 170℃ for 30 min with WAS achieved the highest CH4 production of 205.39 mL CH4/g-VSfed. By adopting the new AD-HT170-AcoD strategy, 61.88 mL CH4/g-tVSfed higher CH4 yield and 22.2% more total solids (TS) reduction were obtained in addition to much better Sludge settleability and 7.6% wt. less Sludge cake production compared to the conventional mono AD. Although negative energy gain was obtained, the proposed AD-HT170-AcoD strategy is promising, economically feasible, and sustainable when the final Sludge disposal of WAS is concerned in the context of whole WWTP.

    Abstract Waste Management planning is a complex task involving a variety factors and professional skills. In order to avoid oversimplification leading to the risk of adopting inappropriate solution the relevant decision problems should be tackled with: (a) a comprehensive decision model (including technical, environmental, economic, social, etc. factors) and (b) a suitable decision supporting tool. In this work as far as (a) is concerned we propose a model based on more than 30 parameters for the evaluation of sewage Sludge Management strategies. As to (b) we implemented this model by employing both a worksheet (“home made” option) and a DSS commercially available (“buy” option). As a case study, we considered the selection of the sewage Sludge Management strategy in a 500,000 inhabitants area comparing the following alternatives: Agricultural use, Incineration, Wet Oxidation and recovery in Cement Kiln. The assessment of the four alternatives led to the following preference order: Agricultural use ≫ Incineration > Cement Kiln ≅ Wet Oxidation. Finally, a discussion on the make-or-buy dilemma and on pros and cons of decision support methods is reported. As a result, a paradigm shift defined make-and-buy approach is proposed.

    Abstract:

    The legislative framework in force in Europe entails restrictive effluent standards for sensitive areas, and quite severe restrictions on the properties of residual sewage Sludge, both for landfill disposal and for agricultural use. Several technologies and Management strategies have been proposed and applied in wastewater treatment plants to minimise Sludge production and contamination. However, their techno-economic and environmental performance has to be carefully evaluated. The ROUTES project, funded within the EU Seventh Framework programme, aims to find new routes for wastewater treatment and Sludge Management and thereby guide EU members in their future choices. Within this project, the authors have developed and applied a procedure for techno-economic-environmental assessment of new wastewater and Sludge processing lines in comparison to reference plants. The reference plants are model conventional plants that experience different types of problems and the new plants are modified plants in which different innovative technologies have been added to solve these problems. The procedure involves a rating of selected technical issues, estimates of operating costs and an assessment of environmental impacts from a life cycle perspective. This paper reports on the procedure and shows examples of results.

    Abstract This paper proposes, for the first time, the use of sewage Sludge ash (SSA), obtained by Sludge combustion for the stabilization of fly ashes containing heavy metals as Pb and Zn. In particular, the proposed method aims to take advantage of valuable raw materials present in SSA, such as phosphate, silica, and alumina. The stabilization has been explained by the synergic phosphate, carbonation, and pozzolanic reactions together with the Friedel's salt formation. This method to sewage Sludge Management allows the complete recovery of valuable raw materials otherwise destinated for lanfill. This is virtuous example of the use of waste materials for de-pollution processes.
