The eternal question is how much documentation is enough. In this article, we present a practical implementation of lightweight product documentation process resulting from SPI efforts in a Small Company. Small companies’ financial and human resources are often limited. The documentation process described here, offers a template for creating adequate documentation consuming minimal amount of resources. The key element of the documentation process is an open source web-based bugtracking system that was customized to be used as a documentation tool. The use of the tool enables iterative and well structured documentation. The solution best serves the needs of a Small Company with off-the-shelf Software products and striving for SPI.

However, limited resources and lack of knowledge about process culture may hinder the improvement efforts in Small companies. In this paper, we present development activities done in a Small growing Software Company in order to establish basis for SPI. Familiarizing to processes and SPI is done by modeling Company's processes using a lightweight Software process modeling technique. The modeling combined with external consulting provides the Company with capability to visualize their processes and to identify the problems in the processes. The improvement activities have been triggered by pointing out the problems. In the presented case, the Company has independently implemented quite significant improvements for identified problems by acquiring needed knowledge and by implementing new tools to support workflows.

Results of data analysis indicate that fuzzy screening is suitable technique for evaluating maintenance process, which is necessary for improving maintenance planning and management activities.

This study presents an approach to assessment of Software maintenance requests' processing in a very Small local Software Company. The approach is context dependent and uses trend analysis and feedback sessions for assessing the current state of maintenance request processing. The analysis is based on various sources of data such as: internal repository of maintenance requests, Company documents, transcribed records of interviews with Company employees, and transcribed records of feedback sessions. Monthly trends for maintenance requests, working hours and types of maintenance tasks, by considering clients and Software products are presented in the article. Identified trends were discussed during feedback sessions in the Company. Participants in feedback sessions were Company employees and researchers. During discussions of trends, some directions for further improvement of maintenance requests' processing were proposed. The article concludes with implications for practitioners from industry and researchers, as well as further research directions.

Over 1900 requests, collected during 19 months in 2010 and 2011, were selected for analysis. The approach takes into account: the frequency of submitted user requests for particular periods of time important for organizing work in the Company, the existence of maintenance service agreement for clients, the number of programmers assigned to the task associated to each request, and the number of working hours required for requests solving. The approach calculates correlation and establishes linear regression between frequencies of submitted user requests and the average time required for completing requests. This approach estimates an average number of working hours for processing user requests in periods of time that are important for internal Company organization. In the paper are also discussed implications for practice and research, and provided recommendations for adapting this approach to other Small Software companies.

Assessing the effects of introducing a new Software development process: a methodological description

Castro, Thomas ArtsAbstract:In this article, we report from a 22-months long action research study in which we evaluate the usefulness of a set of Software development tools in an industrial setting, a Small Software Company. We focus on how developers in the industry use and adopt these tools, what expectations they have on them, how the tools can be improved, and how the adoption process itself can be improved. We describe these change processes from a methodological perspective, how we monitored the processes, how we reviewed the outcomes, and the strategies that we applied. We show how the processes evolved, intermediate results, and the steps that were taken along the way based on the outcomes. We believe that the described study may inspire other tool-developers and/or researchers to organize similar studies to further our understanding of the complex processes involved in the adoption of Software development tools in industry.
