  • Ilang Eksplorasyon sa Pag-aaral ng Kulturang Popular sa Filipinas
    Archīum Ateneo, 2020
    Co-Authors: Sánchez, Louie Jon A.
    Abstract:

Pacing Caroline Hau (2002), this essay explores the historical and intellectual specificities of Cultural Studies and the study of Popular Culture in the Philippines, and situates them in the author’s recent study of the cultural history of the teleserye, the Filipino TV Soap Opera. While the essay assumes that much of the key ideas and paradigms of Western Cultural Studies have been adopted in the country, the ethos of the local field may also be traced back to the works of patriots José Rizal and Isabelo delos Reyes. The projects of the two have been continued by intellectuals and scholars who emerged during the 1960s to the 1970s and formulated more postcolonial approaches to the study of Philippine culture. Moreover, the essay comments on the importance and role of interdisciplinarity in the emergence of Cultural Studies and the study of Popular Culture in the Philippines

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia, 2019
    Co-Authors: Sánchez, Louie Jon A.
    Abstract:

Period of Transition: Soap Opera on Television, 1963-1986 Abstract: This narrates the history of the televisual Soap Opera between 1963 and 1986, described by the author as the “Period of Transition.” This traces the transition of the Soap Opera from radio to the new medium of television during the 60s to 1986, the year of the ouster of the Marcos dictatorship. Foregrounding this is a recounting of the birth of the television industry amidst the intersecting interests of the oligarchic families in politics and business as they invested in it. It will be surmised that the Soap Opera was a product of the tumultuous history of the Philippines, and the history of television, as it had continued to exist despite the disruption and the consequent hampered growth of the medium during the dictatorship. Seven Soap Operas are showcased here, representing the aforementioned transition process.

    Journal of Communication, 2000
Co-Authors: Michael J Papa, Evere M Rogers, Suruchi Sood, Arvind Singhal, Sweety Law, Saumya Pant, Corinne L Shefnerrogers
    Abstract:

Most past studies of entertainment-education programs have not provided an adequate theoretical explanation of the process through which community members enact system-level changes as a result of exposure to entertainment-education media message. Here we study the effects of an entertainment-education radio Soap Opera by means of an observational case study in one Indian village. We investigate the paradoxes, contradictions, and audience members' struggles in the process of media-stimulated change, a process involving parasocial interaction, peer communication, and collective efficacy.
