    Introduction: Opioid overdose fatality has increased threefold since 1999. As a result, prescription drug overdose surpassed motor vehicle collision as the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death in the USA. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist that has been available for decades, can safely reverse opioid overdose if used promptly and correctly. However, clinicians often overestimate the dose of naloxone needed to achieve the desired clinical outcome, precipitating acute opioid withdrawal syndrome (OWS).Areas covered: This article provides a comprehensive review of naloxone’s pharmacologic properties and its clinical application to promote the safe use of naloxone in acute management of opioid intoxication and to mitigate the risk of precipitated OWS. Available clinical data on opioid-receptor kinetics that influence the reversal of opioid agonism by naloxone are discussed. Policies with top-down targets promote the quick fix rather than the most sustainable scheme, and institutional and Social Barriers inhibit the local action needed to identify, plan and deliver the most valuable and appropriate alternatives. For diversity and sustainability, how can local community-based renewable energy (CRE) schemes be valuable and appropriate alternatives?     AbstractBrownfields that are reused for the generation of renewable energy are called brightfields. This rapidly emerging idea advocates the combination sustainable site reuse and the generation of electricity from renewables. While programmes like the RE-Powering America's Land Initiative herald its benefits, academia knows but little of its Barriers and challenges. This study aims to examine the technical/environmental, regulator/financial/institutional, and Social Barriers to this type of development, along with measures that may address them. The Barriers and measures were predominately identified via a qualitative and quantitative survey sent to brightfield developers (experts), along with a review of case studies and the emerging brightfield literature. The study found that environmental/technical Barriers only differ from ‘conventional’ renewable energy projects (e.g. on Greenfields) in the event of site contamination.     The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) notion pioneered the implementation of various smart environments. Smart environments intelligibly accommodate inhabitants’ requirements. With rapid resource shrinkage, energy management has recently become an essential concern for all smart environments. Energy management aims to assure ecosystem sustainability, while benefiting both consumers and utility providers. Although energy management emerged as a solution that addresses challenges that arise with increasing energy demand and resource deterioration, further evolution and expansion are hindered due to technological, economical, and Social Barriers. This review aggregates energy management approaches in smart environments and extensively reviews a variety of recent literature reports on peak load shaving and demand response. Significant benefits and challenges of these energy management strategies were identified through the literature survey. Finally, a critical discussion summarizing trends and opportunities is given as a thread for future research.
