  • sport management must show Social Concern as it develops tenable theory
    Journal of Sport Management, 2007
    Co-Authors: Earle F Zeigler
    Abstract:

Today sport and all other Social institutions (e.g., religion, politics, finance) are confronted with the need to demonstrate that they are worthwhile and responsible. Sport managers should understand what sport’s status is and how and why such standing occurred. Difficult decisions, often ethical in nature, will have to be made as members of the sport management societies worldwide strive to continue developing this profession and discipline. These professionals need to decide to what extent they wish to live up to the broad ideals of the programs being promoted by public, semipublic, and private agencies for people of all types and ages. Those involved with professional preparation and scholarly endeavor urgently need a theory and a disciplinary model for administrative or managerial leadership of sport on a gradually improving, sound academic basis. Practitioners need an online service that provides them with scholarly applied findings as they seek to serve in the behaviorally oriented environment of t...

  • Social Concern and Crime
    Oxford Handbooks Online, 2016
Co-Authors: Cecilia Chouhy, Robert Agnew, Francis T. Cullen
    Abstract:

Social Concern theory (SCT) states that individuals are naturally inclined to show Concern for the welfare of others, desire close ties to others, follow certain moral intuitions, and conform to the behavior and views of others. SCT describes the implications of these inclinations for crime. This essay begins by discussing the conceptions of human nature in different crime theories. It then describes the propositions of SCT, with the major proposition being that individuals high in the elements of Social Concern are generally less likely to engage in crime. It next reviews the limited research on this proposition, followed by a discussion of the policy implications of SCT and directions for further research.

  • Social Concern and crime moving beyond the assumption of simple self interest
    Criminology, 2014
    Co-Authors: Robert Agnew
    Abstract:

Most leading crime theories and crime-control policies are based on the assumption that people are self-interested. But recent work in a variety of fields has challenged this assumption, suggesting that people are both self-interested and Socially Concerned. Social Concern involves biologically based inclinations that sometimes lead people to give more consideration to others than to their own interests. These inclinations include caring about others, forming close ties to and cooperating with others, following certain moral intuitions, and conforming. This article describes the nature of and evidence for Social Concern, as well as the ways in which Social factors shape Social Concern. The article then presents a theory of Social Concern and crime. Social Concern has direct, indirect, mediating, and conditioning effects on crime. Although Social Concern generally reduces the likelihood of crime, it has little effect on or increases crime under certain conditions.

  • Adolescent pregnancy prevention: A review of interventions and programs
    Clinical Psychology Review, 1999
    Co-Authors: Katherine Nitz
    Abstract:

Abstract Adolescent pregnancy is a significant Social Concern. Although rates of adolescent pregnancy have decreased in recent years, they are higher than in any other industrialized nation. Adolescent pregnancy increases the risk of negative consequences for mothers and their children. With little theory to guide practice, pregnancy prevention programs have had little success. The most effective programs have extended beyond reproductive health to include life options, such as education and job skills. Future research is needed to understand factors that predispose teens to early childbearing and to develop developmentally and culturally appropriate disincentives to pregnancy. Roles for psychologists are reviewed in program development, evaluation, and implementation.

  • Private versus public companies with strategic CSR
    Journal of Economics, 2021
Co-Authors: Alessandro Gioffré, Alessandro Tampieri, Antonio Villanacci
    Abstract:

We analyze the effects of strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Social welfare in an industry where firms are owned by consumers (publicly owned) and CSR commitment takes the form of a fraction of the consumer surplus into the firms’ objective function. We compare this market configuration with the standard case of firms owned by entrepreneurs (privately owned). In line with the empirical evidence, consumers’ ownership gives an incentive to adopt a Socially responsible, welfare improving statute. While privately-owned companies are limited in the level of Social Concern to implement, publicly-owned companies are not, and CSR is welfare-improving for any level of Social Concern. Surprisingly, a market configuration of publicly-owned CSR companies decreases welfare compared to an oligopoly of privately-owned CSR companies. The analysis is then extended by considering asymmetric oligopolies with different company types.
