  • Social Criticism in aravind adiga s the white tiger
The International Journal of Literary Humanities, 2013
    Co-Authors: Radika Chopra
    Abstract:

Showing us various aspects of society from politics, economics and culture, via genres like romance, tragedy and comedy from period to period is a common point in all literary works. Before beginning with the study, it is necessary to make clear what 'Social Criticism' is here, as the term itself has a wide meaning. 'Social' will be discussed in the sense, as the Merriam-Webster dictionary puts it, "of or relating to human society, the interaction of the individual and the group, or the welfare of human beings as members of society." This means that in a smaller sense, the term 'Social' concerns the way the individuals, the characters of the novels, deal with each other, and, in a larger sense, how the society is organized and how its institutions treat the individual and the group, which also brings economic and political components into the scope of the study. The present critique underlines Adiga's sociological insight as he deals, in fictional disguise, with the Social structure and relationships, process of Social change or the lack of it, and various ills affecting our society. Liberty and equality are two major boons of Democracy and an egalitarian society. These two vital aspects of human life are instrumental to sustainable development and Enlightenment. But unfortunately there are innumerable evil forces that destroy human liberty and equality. Those evil forces which we call 'corruption' exist in countless forms. India is a sixty two year old Democracy. Arising out of centuries of imperial captivity and foreign rule, the Indian nation aspired for radical change under democracy. But it could not achieve perfection. First, the essay will focus on the wider relations in society, the political, economical and the legal. Then, the individual relations among the characters and the Criticism of them will be observed. Later, this work will also explore how the society influences the individual - here the hero - in his actions.

  • Social Criticism in aravind adiga s the white tiger
    Social Science Research Network, 2010
    Co-Authors: Radika Chopra
    Abstract:

Aravind Adiga in his Booker Prize winning novel, The White Tiger, deals, in fictional disguise, with the Social structure and relationships, process of Social change or the lack of it, and various ills affecting our society. The novel provides samples of gross malpractices in Indian Democracy and society. It is a Social Criticism focusing on the poverty and misery of India, and its religio-socio-political conflicts, presented through humor and irony. The present paper attempts an in-depth analysis of the Social and political resonances in the novel.

  • we have never been liberal the environmentalist turn to liberalism and the possibilities for Social Criticism
    Environmental Politics, 2011
    Co-Authors: John M Meyer
    Abstract:

The shifting relationship between environmental political theorists and liberalism is examined, moving from a total critique to an increasingly nuanced engagement. The argument here is neither for nor against the possibility of ‘greening' liberalism per se. Instead, it is argued that the preoccupation with ‘liberalism' in this context is a category mistake based upon the reification of liberalism as not just a political philosophy, but a characterisation of citizen values and practices in contemporary liberal democratic societies. A different way of thinking about the role and task of environmental political theory and Social Criticism is proposed. The key is to ask whether a theoretical argument resonates with citizens, not whether it can be reconciled with liberalism.

  • we have never been liberal the environmentalist turn to liberalism and the possibilities for Social Criticism
    2009
    Co-Authors: John M Meyer
    Abstract:

There has been a striking turn toward liberalism among Anglo-American political theorists in recent years. This turn can be seen among theorists with diverse interests and normative commitments. Not too long ago, for example, many political theorists concerned with economic inequality rooted their analysis in concepts of class drawn from the Marxist tradition. Yet today, egalitarian political theory is far more likely to be rooted in the liberal tradition. As John Dryzek, Bonnie Honig, and Anne Phillips observe in their introduction to the Oxford Handbook of Political Theory, now “Socialists [are] unexpectedly preoccupied with questions of individual responsibility and desert, liberals [are] representing equality rather than liberty as the ‘sovereign virtue’ (Dworkin 2000), and the two [are] combining to make liberal egalitarianism almost the only remaining tradition of egalitarianism.”1 Similarly, while theorists in the 1980s often represented communitarianism as a distinct challenge to liberalism, prominent theorists such as Michael Walzer, Charles Taylor, and Bernard Yack later argued that “this was a storm in a teacup, a debate within liberalism rather than between liberalism and its critics.”

  • encoding praise and Criticism during Social evaluation alters interactive responses in the mentalizing and affective learning networks
    Frontiers in Neuroscience, 2018
Co-Authors: Shan Gao, Yayuan Geng, Yunxiao Zhou, Shuxia Yao
    Abstract:

Verbal communication with evaluative characters of different emotional valence has a considerable impact on the extent to which Social relations are facilitated or undermined. Here using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated how the brain acts in response to Social praise and Criticism, leading to differential affective judgments. We engaged thirty men and women in a task associating sex-balanced, neutral faces with praising or criticizing comments targeting others or objects. A whole-brain analysis revealed that Criticism as compared to praise enhanced the activation in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), particularly its dorsal portion, whereas the right amygdala displayed an opposite pattern of changes. Comments on others relative to objects increased the reactivity in the left posterior superior temporal sulcus and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) such that both praise and Criticism of others produced stronger activation in these two regions than their object-targeted counterparts. The interaction of valence and target was identified in the mPFC with greater reactivity in the contrasts of Criticism vs. praise in the Social context and others- vs. object-targeted Criticism. Comments also modulated the functional connectivity of prior activated regions with the left temporoparietal junction, bilateral caudate and left PCC/precuneus showing reduced connectivity in response to Social Criticism but greatly strengthened connectivity for Social praise as compared to non-Social counterparts. These neural effects subsequently led to altered likeability ratings for the faces. Neither behavioral nor neural effects observed were influenced by the gender of participants. Taken together, our findings suggest a fundamental interactive role of the mentalizing and affective learning networks in differential encoding of individuals associated with praising or criticizing others, leading to learning of valenced traits and subsequent approach or avoidance responses in Social interactions.
