    Abstract:

    Background Do peripersonal space for acting on objects and interpersonal space for interacting with con-specifics share common mechanisms and reflect the Social valence of stimuli? To answer this question, we investigated whether these spaces refer to a similar or different physical distance. Methodology Participants provided reachability-distance (for potential action) and comfort-distance (for Social Processing) judgments towards human and non-human virtual stimuli while standing still (passive) or walking toward stimuli (active). Principal Findings Comfort-distance was larger than other conditions when participants were passive, but reachability and comfort distances were similar when participants were active. Both spaces were modulated by the Social valence of stimuli (reduction with virtual females vs males, expansion with cylinder vs robot) and the gender of participants. Conclusions These findings reveal that peripersonal reaching and interpersonal comfort spaces share a common motor nature and are sensitive, at different degrees, to Social modulation. Therefore, Social Processing seems embodied and grounded in the body acting in space.

    Abstract:

    Developmental accounts of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) state that infants and children with ASD are spontaneously less attracted by and less proficient in Processing Social stimuli such as faces. This is hypothesized to partly underlie Social communication difficulties in ASD. While in some studies a reduced preference for Social stimuli has been shown in individuals with ASD, effect sizes are moderate and vary across studies, stimuli, and designs. Eye tracking, often the methodology of choice to study Social preference, conveys information about overt orienting processes but conceals covert attention, possibly resulting in an underestimation of the effects. In this study, we recorded eye tracking and electroencephalography (EEG) during fast periodic visual stimulation to address this issue. We tested 21 boys with ASD (8-12 years old) and 21 typically developing (TD) control boys, matched for age and IQ. Streams of variable images of faces were presented at 6 Hz alongside images of houses presented at 7.5 Hz or vice versa, while children were engaged in an orthogonal task. While frequency-tagged neural responses were larger in response to faces than simultaneously presented houses in both groups, this effect was much larger in TD boys than in boys with ASD. This group difference in saliency of Social versus non-Social Processing is significant after 5 sec of stimulus presentation and holds throughout the entire trial. Although there was no interaction between group and stimulus category for simultaneously recorded eye-tracking data, eye tracking and EEG measures were strongly correlated. We conclude that frequency-tagging EEG, allowing monitoring of both overt and covert processes, provides a fast, objective and reliable measure of decreased preference for Social information in ASD.

    Abstract:

    People with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) with normal general intelligence have deficits in complex cognitive Processing, as well as in Social cognition. It is uncertain the extent to which impoverished Processing of emotions may contribute to Social Processing deficiencies. We used the Mayer–Salovey–Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test to clarify the nature of emotional intelligence in 16 adults with AgCC. As hypothesized, persons with AgCC exhibited greater disparities from norms on tests involving more Socially complex aspects of emotions. The AgCC group did not differ from norms on the Experiential subscale, but they were significantly below norms on the Strategic subscale. These findings suggest that the corpus callosum is not essential for experiencing and thinking about basic emotions in a “normal” way, but is necessary for more complex processes involving emotions in the context of Social interactions.

    Clinical observations suggest that individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and normal IQ may have deficits in Social intelligence. This study analyzed responses by normally intelligent individuals with ACC to pictures from the Thematic Apperception Test. A rating system was developed to assess three elements of story-generation: story logic, Social understanding, and common content. Six individuals with ACC (five complete and one partial; IQs > 85) were compared to eight controls matched for sex, age, and IQ. Based on independent rankings of story protocols by two raters, the five individuals with complete ACC were found to be significantly impaired on all three criteria. The one individual with partial ACC performed better than the majority of controls in all three domains. Results demonstrated that individuals with complete ACC are impaired in understanding Socially complex scenes and generating appropriate narratives. Absence of the anterior corpus callosum appears to be important for this deficit.
