    Abstract:

    This paper addresses an important empirical question for spatial economics that has so far attracted little attention in the literature, namely, how patterns of spatial association differ across Socio-Economic Indicators. This issue is examined here with a large Socio-Economic dataset from the Greek prefectures. We start by identifying spatial patterns of association in the data through an exploratory spatial data analysis and then explore the persistence of spatial clustering across Socio-Economic Indicators through the application of a number of simple statistical tests. Greece presents an interesting case for examination, given its complex nature of geographical disparities and spatial heterogeneity. The derived results are important for Greek regional policy, as they help highlight yet another dimension of the challenges it faces for regional development, but they are also of particular relevance for applied spatial analysis, as they offer new insights in the analysis of spatial processes

    Abstract:

    Following the impressive advances in spatial econometric analysis over the last ten years or so, there appears to be a growing interest in an important spatial question that has been largely overlooked until very recently: how spatial dynamics differ across a range of Socio-Economic Indicators. In this chapter, we address this issue for the case of Greece, examining data for a range of Socio-Economic Indicators from the Greek prefectures. Starting from an exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA), we explore the persistence of spatial clustering across Socio-Economic Indicators through the application of a number of simple statistical tests. Greece presents a complex case in terms of spatial geography, as it is characterised by a combination of patterns of spatial heterogeneity and disparity. The analysis presented here shows that spatial processes correlate only weakly across Socio-Economic Indicators, suggesting that policy spillovers for interventions targeting spatial cohesion may be also limited.

This papers attempts to address this issue, examining data from the prefectures of Greece. It starts with an extensive exploratory spatial data analysis of a range of Socio-Economic Indicators, which helps identify spatial patterns of association characterising the Greek regions. Then, it explores the persistence of spatial clustering across this set of Socio-Economic Indicators through the application of a number of simple statistical tests. Greece presents an interesting case for examination, given its complex nature of spatial disparities and processes, especially in terms of spatial heterogeneity, that are linked in the paper to key aspects of the political and economic development of the country.   • Using OpenStreetMap Data and Machine Learning to Generate Socio-Economic Indicators

    Socio-Economic Indicators are key to understanding societal challenges. They disassemble complex phenomena to gain insights and deepen understanding. Specific subsets of Indicators have been developed to describe sustainability, human development, vulnerability, risk, resilience and climate change adaptation. Nonetheless, insufficient quality and availability of data often limit their explanatory power. Spatial and temporal resolution are often not at a scale appropriate for monitoring. Socio-Economic Indicators are mostly provided by governmental institutions and are therefore limited to administrative boundaries. Furthermore, different methodological computation approaches for the same indicator impair comparability between countries and regions. OpenStreetMap (OSM) provides an unparalleled standardized global database with a high spatiotemporal resolution. Surprisingly, the potential of OSM seems largely unexplored in this context. In this study, we used machine learning to predict four exemplary Socio-Economic Indicators for municipalities based on OSM. By comparing the predictive power of neural networks to statistical regression models, we evaluated the unhinged resources of OSM for indicator development. OSM provides prospects for monitoring across administrative boundaries, interdisciplinary topics, and semi-quantitative factors like social cohesion. Further research is still required to, for example, determine the impact of regional and international differences in user contributions on the outputs. Nonetheless, this database can provide meaningful insight into otherwise unknown spatial differences in social, environmental or economic inequalities.

  • Ecological study of Socio-Economic Indicators and prevalence of asthma in schoolchildren in urban Brazil

    There is evidence of higher prevalence of asthma in populations of lower Socio-Economic status in affluent societies, and the prevalence of asthma is also very high in some Latin American countries, where societies are characterized by a marked inequality in wealth. This study aimed to examine the relationship between estimates of asthma prevalence based on surveys conducted in children in Brazilian cities and health and socioeconomic Indicators measured at the population level in the same cities. We searched the literature in the medical databases and in the annals of scientific meeting, retrieving population-based surveys of asthma that were conducted in Brazil using the methodology defined by the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. We performed separate analyses for the age groups 6-7 years and 13-14 years. We examined the association between asthma prevalence rates and eleven health and Socio-Economic Indicators by visual inspection and using linear regression models weighed by the inverse of the variance of each survey. Six health and socioeconomic variables showed a clear pattern of association with asthma. The prevalence of asthma increased with poorer sanitation and with higher infant mortality at birth and at survey year, GINI index and external mortality. In contrast, asthma prevalence decreased with higher illiteracy rates. The prevalence of asthma in urban areas of Brazil, a middle income country, appears to be higher in cities with more marked poverty or inequality.

  • Dynamics of Virtual Water Networks: Role of national Socio-Economic Indicators across the world

    Abstract Intensified water usage due to rapid industrialization is often dictated by economic policies based on monetary growth rather than sustainable use of environmental resources. In addition, interdependence within economic sectors further interweaves water usage through product transactions, which further makes it difficult to quantify the dynamics of hydro-economic systems at regional, national and global scale. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of domestic virtual water networks (VWN) of 189 countries based on concept of information theory by quantifying network metrics that describes VWN flow capacity, robustness, efficiency and flexibility. These networks represent virtual water interconnected through economic sectors within a specified country built based on environmentally extended multi region input output (EE-MRIO) approach. We further estimated trends associated with network metrics, as well as coupling intensity between metrics with respect to Socio-Economic Indicators, such as, population, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross National Income (GNI). It was observed that capacity and flexibility of VWNs are strongly and positively correlated indicating that a high capacity VWN can be more flexible. Our results also indicate that, in general a higher percentage of developing countries (i.e. both least developing and developing nations) have exhibited increasing trends in capacity, robustness, efficiency and flexibility of VWN compared to developed nations. It was revealed that the dynamics of VWNs are positively coupled with Socio-Economic growth for few countries, which indicates the sustainable behavior of VWN with Socio-Economic growth. Our results argue that the information theory-based metrics by embedding water footprints can holistically capture sustainability aspect of the VWN dynamics.

  • The impacts of Socio-Economic indicator on urban growth in Selangor, Malaysia

    Abstract:

    All cities in the world including Malaysia are experiencing rapid urbanization which has given significant impact on the variability of socio-economy. The present study is conducted to investigate the expansion of urban growth in the state of Selangor by selecting appropriate Socio-Economic Indicators used in urban growth studies. The study partly aims to describe a set of socio-Indicators that most directly contribute to urban growth analysis. The objectives of the research are (i) to test the availability of dataset of each Socio-Economic Indicators, (ii) examine the changes of each indicator in a decade, and (iii) propose new criteria for the selection of Socio-Economic Indicators. Findings are derived from the secondary data from a local government agency and available digital datasets. The result advocates the use of criteria to validate the Indicators to be used in future studies.

    In recent decades, Socio-Economic variables have been widely used to investigate regional scale particularly in climate change studies. This paper aims to review appropriate Socio-Economic Indicators for studies related to environment and climate at the level of spatial urban scale. It has been a challenge to select appropriate Indicators because the interrelationship between human interference and the environment has proved difficult to be understood. The method used for the review is content analysis. The finding proposes the future research to choose suitable Socio-Economic Indicators by referring to the scale of study and the spatial coverage of the topic. This article also provides a Socio-Economic framework to ensure that the appropriate of urban scale is the key aspect for selection of Indicators in environmental and climate related studies.

    Abstract:

    Socio-Economic Indicators are important indexes to measure the effect of human activities towards climate. This paper aims to study on the two main socioeconomic Indicators for the urban area, namely population and GDP, to determine the relationship between these variables and climate condition. The State of Selangor, Malaysia was chosen as the study area as this state is among the highest GDP contributors to the country. Secondary data was used for this study by utilising datasets from Statistical Department and Department of Meteorology. The model derived shows that climate condition is moderately dependence of population and GDP. Further analysis can focus on more important socioeconomic variables which may contributed to the climate condition in the urban area.
