International Journal of Lifelong Education, 2014
    Co-Authors: André P. Grace
    Abstract:

This article provides a critical Sociological Analysis of trends and perspectives pervasive during the emergence of North American adult education (1919–1970). In discussing transitions during the first 50 years of what is considered modern practice, it draws on Webster E. Cotton's (1986, On Behalf of Adult Education: A Historical Examination of the Supporting Literature. Boston, MA: Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults) periodization model—modified a few years later—to organize people, politics, and ideas as categories shaping North American adult education. In exploring this complexity, the article reflects on the perennial difficulty of answering the question ‘What is adult education?’ Following brief considerations of periods one (1919–1929) and two (1930–1946) in the field’s emergence, the article focuses on period three (1947–1970) in more detail, providing critical perspectives on field expansion during the perceived corporate age of adult education. • Power as Practice: A Micro-Sociological Analysis of the Dynamics of Emancipatory Entrepreneurship
    Organization Studies, 2011
Co-Authors: David Goss, Robert Jones, Michela Betta, James Latham
    Abstract:

This paper contributes to a recent movement to reframe entrepreneurship theory into a more critical and reflexive mode. It builds on the processual notion of entrepreneuring-as-emancipation to theorize a balanced conception of agency and active constraint rooted in the notion of power rituals. We develop a micro-Sociological Analysis of power rituals that conceives power reproduction and entrenchment as a ‘practice-based’ activity that focuses on what power holders and subordinates concretely do, think and feel. This makes emotion a key dimension of entrepreneurial agency and redefines constraining barriers to agency in terms of a social process of ‘barring’. This novel approach is illustrated using an autobiographical account of a social entrepreneurship project. On the basis of this Analysis, a number of insights are provided into the ways in which the power-as-practice approach can inform wider debates in organization studies where the notions of agency and constraint are linked to issues of power and ...

  • A Second Observation to the Sociological Analysis of the Conflict between Teachers and Students
Journal of Nanjing Normal University, 2001
    Co-Authors: Bai Ming
    Abstract:

The Sociological Analysis provides an essential perspective for research in conflict between teachers and students. However,a notable deficiency can be found in recent work. The definition of teacher student conflict should be more specific. What's more, the difference between teachers and students, which is a prerequisite in teacher student conflict, does not necessarily lead to the conflict. The depute of justness is indispensable to the occurrence of teacher student conflict.Too general a functional definition of teacher student conflict can not work favorably in educational research.
