  • Software Product Quality in global Software development finding groups with aligned goals

    Abstract:

    The development of a Software Product in an organization involves various groups of stakeholders who may prioritize the qualities of the Product differently. This paper presents an empirical study of 65 individuals in different roles and in different locations, including on shoring, outsourcing and off shoring, prioritizing 24 Software Quality aspects. Hierarchical cluster analysis is applied to the prioritization data, separately for the situation today and the ideal situation, and the composition of the clusters, regarding the distribution of the inherent groupings within each of them, is analyzed. The analysis results in observing that the roles are not that important in the clustering. However, compositions of clusters regarding the onshore-offshore relationships are significantly different, showing that the offshore participants have stronger tendency to cluster together. In conclusion, stakeholders seem to form clusters of aligned understanding of priorities according to personal and cultural views rather than their roles in Software development.

To address this issue, value-based Software engineering literature emphasises the need for all success-critical stakeholder groups to work towards a mutually agreed goal. Aim: This paper presents a case study that aims to compare and contrast the priority two groups place on Software Product Quality -- stakeholders internal to the development organisation, and stakeholders from outsourcing relationships. Method: A model of Software Product Quality was developed and used for this study based on ISO 9126 standard. Questionnaires were collected from 38 representatives of the two key stakeholder groups, in which each person rates the relative importance of aspects of Software Product Quality using the hierarchical cumulative voting (HCV) technique. The results of these two groups were then analysed and compared. Results: The results show the stakeholders priorities to be a merging of the priorities from both the Software development organsiation, and the firm providing the outsourced services. Further, stakeholders from outsourced relationships had greater difficulty define an ideal future balance of Software Product qualities. Conclusions: One of the keys to success when outsourcing is to ensure both the internal and external groups understand the needs of each other -- and ensure they can work towards a sufficiently compatible goal. It may be necessary to change the way work is outsourced to align the goals of both firms to be compatible.

    Computing devices and associated Software govern everyday life, and form the backbone of safety critical systems in banking, healthcare, automotive and other fields. Increasing system complexity, quickly evolving technologies and paradigm shifts have kept Software Quality research at the forefront. Standards such as ISO’s 25010 express it in terms of sub-characteristics such as maintainability, reliability and security. A significant body of literature attempts to link these subcharacteristics with Software metric values, with the end goal of creating a metric-based model of Software Product Quality. However, research also identifies the most important existing barriers. Among them we mention the diversity of Software application types, development platforms and languages. Additionally, unified definitions to make Software metrics truly language-agnostic do not exist, and would be difficult to implement given programming language levels of variety. This is compounded by the fact that many existing studies do not detail their methodology and tooling, which precludes researchers from creating surveys to enable data analysis on a larger scale. In our paper, we propose a comprehensive study of metric values in the context of three complex, open-source applications. We align our methodology and tooling with that of existing research, and present it in detail in order to facilitate comparative evaluation. We study metric values during the entire 18-year development history of our target applications, in order to capture the longitudinal view that we found lacking in existing literature. We identify metric dependencies and check their consistency across applications and their versions. At each step, we carry out comparative evaluation with existing research and present our results.

  • Interactions between environmental sustainability goals and Software Product Quality: A mapping study

    Abstract Context Sustainability is considered as either a Quality requirement or a Quality characteristic that should be included in Software when environmental protection concerns are being taken into account. However, addressing sustainability in Software projects might have an impact on the Quality of the Software Product delivered. Conflicting goals between sustainability and particular Software Product characteristics should be studied when developing application Software, since achieving users’ requirements can be a hindrance in the quest to meet sustainability goals. Objective This paper aims to provide an overview of the approaches found in the literature for dealing with interactions between Software Product Quality and sustainability in the context of application Software. Method A systematic mapping study is conducted to identify practices for managing interactions between Software Quality characteristics and sustainability. The selected papers are classified according to the Quality characteristic considered and their influence on sustainability. Results Most of the 66 selected papers focused on validating current technologies concerning their support for sustainability (46%%). The interaction between performance efficiency and energy efficiency is what is reported most and there is a fairly positive interaction. In addition, reliability and usability point to a positive interaction with energy efficiency, while security shows a conflicting interaction with energy efficiency. Functional suitability and maintainability can present both positive and negative interaction, with different goals derived from environmental sustainability. Conclusions Interactions between Software Quality and sustainability have been addressed within an explorative approach. There is a need for additional research work to characterize the impact of interaction on both Software Quality and sustainability. Furthermore, proposals should be validated in industrial settings.

    Abstract:

    In this paper we discuss how we at Alarcos Quality Center implemented AQCLab, the first laboratory in the world to be accredited as meeting ISO/IEC 17025 for Software Product Quality evaluation based on the ISO/IEC 25000 series of standards. We implemented AQC Lab following agile principles by means of an adaptation of the Scrum methodology. This work method helped us to progress in a challenging context which had several similarities to Software development, where the requirements were uncertain from the start.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The subjectivity that underlies the notion of Quality does not allow the design and development of a universally accepted mechanism for Software Quality assessment. This is why contemporary research is now focused on seeking mechanisms able to produce Software Quality models that can be easily adjusted to custom user needs. In this context, we introduce QATCH, an integrated framework that applies static analysis to benchmark repositories in order to generate Software Quality models tailored to stakeholder specifications. Fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making is employed in order to model the uncertainty imposed by experts’ judgments. These judgments can be expressed into linguistic values, which makes the process more intuitive. Furthermore, a robust Software Quality model, the base model, is generated by the system, which is used in the experiments for QATCH system verification. The paper provides an extensive analysis of QATCH and thoroughly discusses its validity and added value in the field of Software Quality through a number of individual experiments.

    The paper presents the evolution of Software Quality standards, starting from the first Quality models developed by individual researchers. The general structure of Software Quality models has been presented. The first standard Quality model ISO/IEC 9126:1991 has been described, then its modifications from 2001, ending with contemporary Quality model described in ISO/IEC 25010:2011. The differences between subsequent versions of the model have been indicated. The disadvantages of the evolution’s direction have been discussed.
