  • Governance fragmentation and urban Spatial Expansion: Evidence from Europe and the United States
    Review of Regional Research, 2019
Co-Authors: Silvia Beghelli, Gianni Guastella, Stefano Pareglio
    Abstract:

This study assesses the effects of urban governance structure on the Spatial Expansion of metropolitan areas. A more fragmented governance structure, represented by a high number of administrative units with decision power on land use per inhabitant, is expected to increase the competition between small towns in the suburbs of metropolitan areas to attract households and workers, which, in turn, induces more land uptake. We study empirically the relationship between administrative fragmentation and the Spatial size of cities in a sample of 180 metropolitan areas in the contexts of the US and Europe in the period 2000—2012. Results shed light on the structural differences between the two broad regions and suggest that administrative fragmentation impacts positively on land uptake in both the United States and Europe, although to different extents.

  • Patterns of Urban Spatial Expansion in European Cities
    Sustainability, 2019
Co-Authors: Gianni Guastella, Walid Oueslati, Stefano Pareglio
    Abstract:

In representing urban sprawl, the decline in population and employment density from the city centre to the periphery has been identified as the main character associated with the Spatial Expansion of built-up areas. Urban Spatial discontinuity, which occurs when the urban fabric includes built-up or green areas and a relevant share of vacant spaces, has gained recent attention. In this paper, we use Global Human Settlement Layer data to track urbanisation dynamics in European Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) from 1990 to 2014. We represent urban sprawl as the Spatial Expansion of FUAs associated with either or both declining population density and increasing built-up area discontinuity. We also consider the association with the demographic trends that have been described as the primary driver of urban Spatial Expansion. We use configural frequency analysis to explore the local association between the different characters of sprawl. We found evidence that urban sprawl effectively took differentiated forms across European FUAs. Even though FUAs have generally become less dense and more disperse, our results show that the extent of these phenomena appears to be more contained in recent years than in previous decades. Both elements of sprawl characterise FUAs with a shrinking population, confirming the decoupling of urban development policies and demographic trends in cities. The results call for better controlled urban development, favouring compact cities and subjecting land-use changes to a perspective of urban population growth.

  • Relationship between transportation system and urban Spatial Expansion in Wuhan Urban Agglomeration
    Progress in geography, 2014
    Co-Authors: Guan Xing-lian
    Abstract:

Investigating the relationship between transportation system and urban Spatial Expansion is an important starting point for revealing interactions between transportation and economic growth.Existing studies in development economics and transportation economics frequently used indicators such as transportation investment and operating mileage of railways and highways to reflect the level of development of traffic infrastructure. These indicators can well demonstrate the investment and construction scale in relation to transportation system as well as well fit the inherent requirement of economic models, yet they are insufficient in reflecting the operation level and efficiency of transportation facilities and their spatio-temporal differentiation.Taking the Wuhan Urban Agglomeration(WUA) as an example, this paper extracted urban land area information and road network in 2000 and 2010 using Landsat imageries through the application of remote sensing and GIS technology. It investigates the spatio-temporal pattern, relationship and driving mechanism of accessibility as well as transport dominance and urban Spatial Expansion with the application of isochrone overlay and index classification methods. The results indicate that an interdependent and bi-directional relationship exists between transportation system and urban Spatial Expansion. The transportation system plays an important role in supporting and promoting economic growth and agglomeration of population and industry, which are intrinsically related to Spatial Expansion of urban land, through direct impacts, external effects as well as multiplier effects.Correspondingly, urban Spatial Expansion stimulates and ensures the improvements in the quantity and quality of transportation system.Unbalanced distribution of the transportation system is contended to be an important factor causing increased regional economic disparity. The policy implications are that, the government should attach more attention to formulating differentiated transportation development strategies and improving the integrated transportation system in the metropolitan area, which may facilitate accelerated economic growth and reducing regional economic disparities.

  • The Influence of Transportation on the Urban Spatial Expansion in Beijing
    Urban Studies, 2008
    Co-Authors: Zhu Rongf
    Abstract:

Transportation is the major intrinsic and adaptive factor in urban Spatial Expansion, and it directs the Expansion direction. This article chose three representative regions, and the authors found that different road transportations have different influences on the change of urban Spatial structure. The central city is mainly influenced by rings, highways, subways and railways, and the suburban area is mainly impacted by the national road and provincial road.

  • Review on the research of urban Spatial Expansion
    Progress in geography, 2013
    Co-Authors: Huang Jinchuan
    Abstract:

Urban Spatial Expansion is the most important manifestation of urbanization process, and urban land– use change is the most direct indicator of urban Spatial extension, namely,"Spatial urbanization".Along with global urbanization, urban Spatial Expansion has become a hot field in the research of urban development.Foreign research on urban Spatial Expansion started to unfold when Quantitative Geography Revolution took place in the 1960s,whereas in China it had a relatively late start in the 1980s.Now China is undergoing rapid urbanization, problems and conflicts in urban space Expansion are becoming increasingly prominent.Since 2000,a large number of achievements have been made in this field, and need to be sorted out.Based on the progress of theoretical studies and the change of the content of urban Spatial Expansion research, this article uses the methods of literature search and comparative analysis to review the research progress. The urban Spatial Expansion researches are reviewed from five aspects, including Expansion types,Expansion patterns, dynamic mechanism, simulation and prediction, effects and regulations.Through discussing the different research contents, research methods and research conclusions, and combining classification and comprehensive review of foreign and domestic researches, this review discusses the characteristics and inadequacy of the current research, and suggests future research directions. The trend of urban Spatial Expansion research in China are summarized in four aspects as follows:(1) future research will become more and more focused on urban Spatial simulation and prediction;(2) the research on Spatial Expansion pattern at the regional scale and in the less developed central and west areas will be strengthened;(3) by taking research experience and methods from other disciplines for reference,we should strengthen the fusion of multidisciplinary methods to be better able to solve the problem of urban Spatial Expansion;(4) based on the status and environment of urban development research in China, the theory and method of the research need to be innovated,in order to narrow the gap between domestic and international research levels. This review provides a reference for further studies of urban Spatial Expansion as well as the guidance for a healthy, sound and coordinated development of urban space.
