    Abstract:

    Carvone (l-carvone), a mint flavour in Spearmint Oil, is considered a mild skin sensitizer. Carvone-sensitization may be linked to oral/perioral signs and oral lichen planus, but studies are sparse. The prevalence of patch test reactions to carvone and relevant findings from the positive group were investigated. Records for patch-tested patients at the Malmo clinic, for the period 1996 to 2016, were studied. Carvone-positive and carvone-negative patients were compared regarding patch test data from baseline series and dental series. Dental series-tested carvone-positive patients were also compared with a matched group. A total of 147 out of 4,221 referred patients had a positive patch test to carvone. Sensitized patients had higher mean age and were primarily women; 73% had oral signs and 57% had oral lichen. Concomitant patch test reactions to gold, nickel and mercury were common. In the matched group-comparison carvone-positive patients had a higher frequency of oral lichen, but no difference was found in sensitization to gold and mercury.

    Abstract Spearmint Oil known as aromatic volatile compound of plants are widely used in food industries. In the present study, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction is used to extract the essential Oil from Spearmint leaves. In this way, a series of extraction experiments are designed to investigate the effect of different operating conditions such as extraction pressure (85–120 bar), extraction temperature (38–50 °C), CO2 flow rate (0.059–0.354 g/min), mean particle size (0.177–2 mm) and dynamic extraction time (20–120 min) on efficiency of the extracted essential Oils. In the last step, not only a second order polynomial equation is developed to obtain the optimal SC-CO2 extraction parameters, but also the composition of extracted essential Oil at optimum operating condition is analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS).

    Abstract:

    The packed bed extraction of Spearmint Oil using supercritical carbon dioxide was studied by a two-phase mass transfer model on the basis of desorption and diffusion. Unsteady-state mass balance for solute in supercritical and in solid phases led to two partial differential equations that were solved numerically using a linear equilibrium relationship. The model has four parameters, axial dispersion, mass transfer, and diffusion and desorption coefficients. Diffusion and desorption coefficients were used as the model tuning parameters and the others were predicted applying existing experimental correlations. The tuning parameters were calculated by the fitting error between 5 and 15% by the genetic algorithm method. In addition, this model was compared with a model that did not account for the desorption rate, according to the model suggested by Goodarznia and Eikani (G&E).     Abstract:

    Abstract Supercritical extraction (SE) is a separation technique utilizes near or above critical properties of the solvents. In this technique, modeling of yield and solubility of materials are crucial points in supercritical fluid extraction processes. Generally, mathematical modeling of the supercritical Oil extraction is a very difficult task since a highly nonlinear relation exists between process variables and solubility. Considering these facts, in the present study, a trainable cascade-forward back-propagation network (CFBPN) was proposed to correlate the yield of Spearmint Oil extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide. The results revealed the applicability of the proposed model to correlate the yield of Spearmint Oil extraction with an acceptable level of accuracy. Finally, the obtained results were compared to mathematical models namely Goodarznia & Eikani and Kim & Hong. The comparison between the results of proposed network and mathematical models demonstrated a better predictive capability of the proposed network.
