    Abstract:

    Trochospongilla horrida (Porifera, Spongillidae) was the dominant freshwater sponge in the Rhine between Karlsruhe and Bonn between 1992 and 1995 are reported. It showed an annual life cycle, with an inactive phase during winter. The life cycle was controlled by temperature. Gemmules were produced in high numbers, and played a significant role as resting bodies. Their role as distribution units was negligible because they were tightly fixed to the substratum. Trochospongilla horrida preferred relatively stable habitats, not affected by fluctuations in water level; it was restricted to habitats with a slightly alkaline pH. Laboratory experiments showed a delayed germination of the gemmules, which explains why the highest abundance of the species occured considerably after the first hatching colonies.

    Umborotula bogorensis (Weber, 1890) is a freshwater sponge species that is recorded occasionally, mainly on islands and peninsulas of Australasia. Less than 10 records with morphological descriptions and illustrations have been published so far, and the most recent record is dated 1978. A list of the few voucher specimens from museum collections is provided here together with the rich unpublished Sasaki collection from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, recently deposited in a Japanese museum. The present new record from Northeast Thailand enlarges the geographic range of U. bogorensis to the Indochina mainland. A comparison of historical data vs present Thai records is performed by morpho-analysis (SEM) as well as biogeographic, ecological and climatic data. Results show low variability in shape and size of the diagnostic morphotraits in populations scattered over the wide geographic range. Here we also formally accept the new taxonomic status (rank elevation) of the previous suborder Spongillina as a new order Spongillida. The presence of this potentially threatened species in the Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve, together with its possible long-term persistence in the Bogor Botanical Garden, may support its conservation. Only a census of the known, extremely scattered populations will define the status of this species.

    Abstract:

    This paper focus on the biodiversity assessment of Australian inland water. Checklists of Australian Spongillida are also provided with biogeographic notes together with the geographic range of all species of freshwater sponges in Australia. New discoveries on freshwater sponges are reported from ephemeral freshwater habitats in Kakadu National Park (Australia Northern Territory). Morphological analyses show that the sponges belong to Radiospongilla and Pectispongilla in the family Spongillidae. Radiospongilla cfr. philippinensis shows a single layer of radial gemmuloscleres and the absence of tangential gemmuloscleres in the gemmular theca. Pectispongilla gagudjuensis n. sp. diverges from the diagnostic traits of the four species currently assigned to the genus i.e. skeletal megascleres are dominant acanthostrongyles and less frequent acanthoxeas shorter than in the other species, microscleres are absent, and gemmules are larger than in the other species of the genus.

    Abstract:

    Porifera is a primarily marine phylum comprising more than 15,000 species. The successful and wide adaptive radiation of freshwater sponges (Haplosclerida: Spongillina) has resulted in the colonization of an extremely wide variety of habitats at all latitudes. Colonization is dated back to the Mesozoic, and the mono- or poly-phyletism of Spongillina, and the number of potential sponge invasions into freshwater is still under debate. Living freshwater sponges belong to 45 genera in six families for a total of 219 species. The highest diversity, at the scale of zoogeographic regions, is recorded from the Neotropical (65 species), Palaearctic (59 species), and Afrotropical regions (49 species). Endemic freshwater sponge species are 103 (47%) out of 219. All species belonging to the families Lubomirskiidae, Metschnikowiidae, and Malawispongiidae are endemic. Endemic species among the other families are 72% for Potamolepidae, 38% for Spongillidae, and 32% for Metaniidae. Data on some wide geographic areas are scattered and fragmentary if not almost completely lacking. Species richness is probably underestimated and doubtless destined to increase with further research.

    Abstract:

    Biodiversity was assessed and a synthesis of sponges belonging to the genus Eunapius from African inland waters was performed, with detailed descriptions, geographic distribution, ecological notes and a diagnostic key. The gemmular trait "network of spongin fi bers in the inner portion of the gemmular theca" discovered by the SEM analysis is here reported for the fi rst time in four species of the genus. A comparative analysis was made, based on a critical revision of original descriptions, recent investigations on materials from historical collections, and recent samplings. Eight taxa are here reported, namely the widespread Eunapius carteri and E. fragilis, and the African endemics E. aetheriae, E. ambiguus, E. carteri saharensis, E. michaelseni, E. nitens and Eunapius sp. The genus Eunapius is, among Spongillidae, the most common and widespread in Africa in North Africa, Sahara and Sub-Sahara up to South Africa and Namibia. Habitats range from extremely isolated waters in deserts to swamps, perennial rivers and lakes in highlands and coastal areas.

    Abstract:

    The paper reports the first finding of freshwater sponges from the Greater Antilles. Spongillidae belonging to four species of the genera Ephydatia, Anheteromeyenia, and Radiospongilla were found in a variety of freshwater habitats in western Cuba. Anheteromeyenia cheguevarai nov. sp. is described. Morphological traits of sponges from West Cuba were characterized by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and compared to the spongillofauna of the Nearctic and Neotropical regions and the pan‐Caribbean area. The specific richness and the discovery of a new species suggest a high diversity of the Antillean freshwater sponges although the investigated area of Cuba is relatively small.

    Die rezente Süßwasserschwamm-Art Ephydatia cf. facunda Weltner, 1895 (Spongillida, Spongillidae) wird erstmals als Fossil aus den mittel-eozänen Seeablagerungen des Giraffe Kimberlit-Maars im nördlichen Kanada nachgewiesen. Die Schwammspezies ist sowohl durch birotule Gemmoskleren als auch durch Megaskleren (Oxen) belegt. Heute besiedelt E. facunda warm-temperierte Wasserkörper, somit spricht ihr Vorkommen für ein warmes Klima in hohen Breiten während des Mittel-Eozäns. Die morphologische Ähnlichkeit der Birotulen in Bezug auf moderne konspezifische Formen legt eine protrahierte morphologische Stasis nahe, vergleichbar mit derjenigen anderer kieseliger Mikrofossilien aus derselben Fundstelle. The morphological similarity of the birotules to modern conspecific forms suggests protracted morphological stasis, comparable to that reported for other siliceous microfossils from the same locality.

  • Distribution of freshwater sponges in Serbia

    Abstract:

    As data on the distribution of freshwater sponges (Porifera, Demospongiae, Spongillida) in Serbia are extremely scarce, we investigated the main Serbian rivers and lakes with respect to Porifera occurrence, for which 17 lotic and 11 lentic water bodies were selected. Sponges were found in 11 of 17 rivers (62 specimens in total) and in 3 of 11 lakes/reservoirs (seven specimens in total). Classical morphological spicule analysis was coupled with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gene sequencing for species identification. Among the 69 collected specimens, five sponge species of the family Spongillidae have been identified: Ephydana fluviatilis (Linnaeus, 1759), Spongilla lacustris (Linnaeus, 1759), Ephydatia muelleri (Lieberklihn, 1856), Trochospongilla horrida Weltner, 1893, and Eunapius fragilis (Leidy, 1851). The most frequently found sponge in Serbian rivers was E.fluviatilis (45 % of all specimens), while the least frequent was E. fragilis (6% of all specimens). The Tisa river has the highest sponge diversity (four species). In lentic water bodies, only E.fluviatilis (four specimens) and S. lacustris (three specimens) were found. In general, sponges were infrequent and their abundance was low in Serbian fresh waters. While sponges seem to tolerate significant variations of physical and chemical parameters, some optimal values can be established

    Trochospongilla horrida Weltner, 1893 (Spongillidae, Spongillida) has a relatively wide, though discontinuous, distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. The aim of this paper was to report the first finding of T. horrida in Serbia. During 2017, research was carried out on ten tributaries of the Sava and the Danube. T. horrida was identified at three localities in Tisa, Juzna Morava and Zapadna Morava rivers, out of 51 inspected sites. For the first time ribosomal 28S DNA was used for T. horrida identification

    The only stygobiotic sponge, known up to date, is Eunapius subterraneus including two subspecies E. subterraneus subterraneus Sket & Velikonja 1986 and E. subterraneus mollisparspanis Sket & Velikonja 1986. Since the first description of the species, when only three localities were known, the species was found in six additional localities. This research has been part of the project “ Conservation of Eunapius subterraneus, the only underground freshwater sponge in the world” , and it has been conducted in order to analyse morphological features and identify newly recorded populations, as well as to examine the current state of habitat quality and population-threatening changes. Samples were collected from six localities and specimens were examined morphometrically. The subspecies E. subterraneus subterraneus was recorded in three new localities. Subspecies E. subterraneus mollisparspanis was only found at the type locality. In Cave system Đula Medvedica population was not found, while research in Cave in quarry Tounj was not conducted because of risks due to high statical instability of the cave. Both localities are registered in the List of 10 most endangered karst phenomena in Croatia. Eunapius subterraneus is listed in the Red list of threatened plants and animals of Croatia, and, in addition, Ogulin as a part of distribution area is registered in 2003 as one of 10 most endangered karst ecosystems in the world by Karst waters institute (Washington, USA). These two facts indicate the need for urgent protection measures to save this unique element of Croatian fauna.
