Self-Perceived Health of Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Relation with the Severity Level
Psychology, 2014Co-Authors: Clarisse Chatel Garriot, Anne Marie Bartolini, Virginie Villes, Francois PoinsoAbstract:Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by deficits in reciprocal social interaction and communication which have a major effect on the quality of life of the parents. Self-perceived health of 124 ASD parents was investigated using the short-form health survey (SF-36) questionnaire. In a first step, comparative analysis was performed between a control group of parents and three groups of ASD parents classified according to the severity levels for autism spectrum disorder. In a second step, correlation analysis was performed between the self-perceived health of ASD parents and a continuous rating scale of the severity level of ASD children, determined with the Childhood Autistic Rating Scale (CARS) and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic (ADOS-G). Results show that as the severity level of ASD symptoms increase, mother’s perception of their own health decreases. Statistical analysis revealed a very strong relationship between the Mental Health of the mothers and the ASD children, especially with the deficit in social interaction. Restrictive and repetitive behavior and difficulty in play have less direct impact on the quality of life of ASD mothers. The highest impairment in quality of life was observed for the mothers of severe autism children, in the time spent at work and the difficulty to perform activities, due to mental and physical problems. Relationship between fathers and ASD children is significantly lower than that observed for mothers, except for problems with work or other daily activities as a result of physical health. These finding must be taken into account to provide better and more focused support to ASD mothers, in order to improve the mental health and to reduce the difficulty in performing activities.

family structure and children s physical and mental health
Health Affairs, 2007Co-Authors: Matthew D Amle, Stephe J LumbergAbstract:Using the 2003 National Survey of Children’s Health, this paper examines the physical and mental health of children by family structure. Children in step, single-mother, or grandparent-only families had poorer health than children living with two biological parents. Adjusting for demographic differences reduced observed disparities, although children living in single-mother or grandparent-only families still had poorer health than children living with two biological parents. Adjusted estimates showed that children in single-father families generally did as well as (for mental health) or better than (for physical health) children living with two biological parents.

relation between marital quality and step parent child relationship quality for parents and stepparents in stepfamilies
Journal of Family Psychology, 1995Co-Authors: Mark A. Fine, Lawrence A KurdekAbstract:This study examined the relation between perceived marital quality and the perceived quality of the (step)parent–child relationship in 2 independent samples of couples living in stepfamilies. In Sample 1, participants were both spouses in 111 stepmother families and 92 stepfather families recruited from the Stepfamily Association of America. In Sample 2, participants were both spouses in 442 stepfather families and 75 stepmother families who participated in the National Survey of Families and Households. Within families, for both samples, the relation between perceived marital quality and the perceived quality of the stepparent–stepchild relationship was stronger than that between perceived marital quality and the perceived quality of the biological parent–child relationship.

Consistency in Perceptions of the Step-Parent Role among Step-Parents, Parents and Stepchildren
Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 1998Co-Authors: Mark A. Fine, Marilyn Coleman, Lawrence H. GanongAbstract:The purposes of this study were to determine the degree of consistency in stepfamily members' perceptions of the step-parent role, to examine the relation between the degree of consistency in role perceptions and adjustment in stepfamilies, and to determine the extent to which clarity pertaining to the step-parent role was related to adjustment. Step-Parents, parents and stepchildren from 40 stepfamilies completed a series of self-report questionnaires pertaining to their perceptions of the step-parent role and multiple levels of adjustment in their stepfamilies. Step-Parents and parents perceived that the step-parent should and does play an active parental role, stepchildren were more likely to perceive that the step-parent should assume the less active role of `friend', and consistency in role perceptions was moderately strongly related to the interpersonal dimensions of adjustment in stepfamilies. The findings suggest that stepchildren have differing perceptions of the step-parent role than do their pa...
