These services are popular, however many enterprises have been wary to adopt them for business documents because of security, privacy, and ownership issues. Enterprises' concerns create large amount of private cloud Storage service demands, but not all enterprises have enough resources to build and maintain their own private services. To address this issue, this study developed a cloud Storage system software, which can be easily installed on commodity server to be a private cloud Storage Appliance to serve services like public offers in enterprises. Since the availability of a pure private service is not enough, a hybrid cloud Storage architecture is also introduced in this paper along with the proposed Storage system software. In the proposed hybrid architecture, the encrypted remote backup store and automatic service restore mechanism will be illustrated. With this hybrid cloud Storage architecture, private Storage Appliance can cooperate with public virtual one to provide enterprises with a service operational high availability. The performance of the local cloud Storage system software was measured. The result indicates that our cloud Storage system software is able to be installed on resource limited devices to serve enterprise employees.

Providing Storage quality of service (QoS) for VMs is essential to user experiences while challenging. It first requires an accurate estimate and description of VM requirements, however, people usually describe this via rules of thumb. The problems are exacerbated by the diversity and special characteristics of VMs in a computing environment. This paper chooses Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), a prevalent and complicated VM application, to characterize QoS requirements of VMs and to guarantee QoS with minimal required resources. We create a model to describe QoS requirements of VDI. We have collected real VDI traces from HP to validate the correctness of the model. Then we generate QoS requirements of VDI and determine bottlenecks. Based on this, we can tell what minimum capability a Storage Appliance needs in order to satisfy a given VDI configuration and QoS requirements. By comparing with industry experience, we validate our model. And our model can describe more fine-grained VM requirements varying with time and virtual disk types, and provide more confidence on sizing Storage for VDI as well.

NeST: a Grid enabled Storage Appliance

NeST has three key features that make it well-suited for deployment in a Grid environment. First, NeST provides a generic data transfer architecture that supports multiple data transfer protocols (including GridFTP and NFS), and allows for the easy addition of new protocols. Second, NeST is dynamic, adapting itself on-the-fly so that it runs effectively on a wide range of hardware and software platforms. Third, NeST is Grid-aware, implying that features that are necessary for integration into the Grid, such as Storage space guarantees, mechanisms for resource and data discovery, user authentication, and quality of service, are a part of the NeST infrastructure. We include a practical discussion about building Grid tools using the NeST software.
