  • Statistics on Student Diversity and multiculturalism in higher education
    Journal of Accounting Education, 1997
Co-Authors: Richard E. Baker, Beata Nowak
    Abstract:

Abstract Many people are working to develop a diverse Student base in our colleges and universities. The success, or lack thereof, of these recruiting and retention efforts requires hard data against which current efforts can be evaluated. The purpose of this study is to provide, in one place, national-level statistics on Diversity and multi-culturalism in our institutions of higher education. Statistics for both bachelors' and masters' degree levels are presented from the AICPA and from several U.S. government sources by race/ethnic groups for several years. This article provides the statistical benchmarks against which individual accounting and business programs can compare their respective positions and achievements in promoting Student Diversity and multi-culturalism in their programs.

  • Ambiguous Legacy: Instituting Student Diversity at a Spanish Secondary School
Cultural Studies ↔ Critical Methodologies, 2005
    Co-Authors: Cathryn Teasley
    Abstract:

Critical ethnographic inquiry guides this examination of the ways in which a group of experienced teachers at an urban secondary school in Spain have responded to a series of new regulations of their practice in the context of markedly increased Student Diversity at the school. The analysis centers on the ideological stances represented and produced through the educators’ discourse and actions and on the implications for the education of the school’s Roma/Gypsy Students as members of possibly the most disenfranchised ethnic group of Spain. The article concludes with the exploration of some alternative means, especially through action research, for producing professional commitments that are more conducive to socially just and culturally responsive educational processes.

  • Student Diversity and Secondary School Change in a Context of Increasingly Standardized Reform
    American Educational Research Journal, 2008
    Co-Authors: Allison Skerrett, Andy Hargreaves
    Abstract:

This article analyzes three decades of educational reform strategies pertaining to ethnocultural Diversity in the United States and Canada and how they affect the efforts of four secondary schools, two in each context, to respond to increasing Student Diversity. Data include 186 teacher interviews drawn from a large ethnographic study. The article describes the current effects of increasing standardization on racially diverse schools and concludes with recommendations for policy reform that embrace poststandardization.
