  • exploring new territories in pedagogical Stylistics an investigation of high school efl students assessments
    Language and Literature, 2017
    Co-Authors: Vander Viana, Sonia Zyngier
    Abstract:

The growing number of recent publications on pedagogical Stylistics indicates that this area is still of much interest to those who invest in the integration of language and literature. However, evidence-based assessments of pedagogical Stylistics are still few and depend mostly on teachers’ intuitions. The present study contributes towards filling this gap by examining 28 reflective accounts produced by high-school English as a foreign language (EFL) teenagers who participated in a literary awareness workshop on iconicity. Branching out from pedagogical Stylistics, literary awareness is here described as a program which aims at sensitizing students to verbal artistry. The bottom-up analysis of the participants’ accounts reveals five main aspects – “applicability,” “learning,” “materials,” “students” and “teaching” – and indicates that the workshop was to a certain degree transformative. Instead of an instrumental approach to language learning, the workshop aimed mostly at consciousness-raising. Students’...

  • Stylistics pedagogical applications
Encyclopedia of Language & Linguistics (Second Edition), 2006
    Co-Authors: Sonia Zyngier
    Abstract:

Conflicting views of Stylistics have brought about the need for critical evaluations of the relations between theories and practices. Notwithstanding these differences, what remains constant is their central concern with choice and effect. This article offers a definition of pedagogical Stylistics by situating it within the framework of ‘Stylistics applied’ and ‘applied Stylistics.’ The article also builds a historical background so as to provide a contextualized understanding of its development. Three strands of present usage are then described. After pointing out the different techniques for approaching texts in the classroom, the article ends with a discussion of future developments in the area.

  • towards a pedagogical Stylistics
    Language and Literature, 2003
    Co-Authors: Urszula Clark, Sonia Zyngier
    Abstract:

Since the 1950s, pedagogical Stylistics has been intrinsically linked with the teaching of written texts (and especially literary texts) to speakers of English as a second language. This is despite the fact that for decades many teachers have also structured their lessons in L1 classrooms to focus upon the linguistic features of literary texts as a means of enhancing their students’ understanding of literature and language. Recognizing that instructors in both L1 and L2 settings were often employing related pedagogical techniques without realizing that their colleagues in the other context were facing similar challenges, the PEDSIG group of the Poetics and Linguistics Association (PALA) has sought to add a theoretical dimension to research undertaken into practice in the Stylistics classroom. Its goals, then, were: to establish a working definition of pedagogical Stylistics; to identify the theoretical and pedagogical underpinnings of the discipline shared by L1 and L2 practitioners; to point if possible towards any emerging consensus on good practice. The group determined that the principal aim of Stylistics in the classroom is to make students aware of language use within chosen texts, and that what characterizes pedagogical Stylistics is classroom activities that are interactive between the text and the (student) reader. Preliminary findings, from a pilot study involving a poem by Langston Hughes, suggest that the process of improving students’ linguistic sensibilities must include greater emphasis upon the text as action: i.e. upon the mental processing which is such a proactive part of reading and interpretation; and how all of these elements – pragmatic and cognitive as well as linguistic – function within quite specific social and cultural contexts.

  • towards a cultural approach to Stylistics
Cauce: Revista Internacional de Filología Comunicación y sus Didácticas, 2001
    Co-Authors: Sonia Zyngier
    Abstract:

This paper discusses the different approaches to Stylistics, here regarded as the cutting edge in literary-linguistic enquiry, and presents the possible benefits of a contextualized Stylistics to the teaching of literature. Starting from the assumption that Stylistics is a very troubled and slippery concept, it points out how the different linguistic approaches to the literary text have moved from universals and microlinguistic observations to the study of context and its influence in the way people behave, speak and communicate. The main objective of this paper is to argue that Stylistics can sit very comfortably between language and literature, contribute to the understanding of the text as cultural praxis, and thus work as a bridge between cultural, literary and linguistic studies. To support this argument, some of the different lights under which Stylistics has been seen are discussed. The paper concludes by offering a theoretical model which may help describe a contextualized pedagogical Stylistics. KEY WORDS Stylistics, cultural studies, literary awareness, pedagogy.

  • corpus Stylistics norms and comparisons studying speech in great expectations
Rethinking Language Text and Context: Interdisciplinary Research in Stylistics in Honour of Michael Toolan 2018 ISBN 978-1-351-18322-2 págs. 123-144, 2018
    Co-Authors: Michaela Mahlberg, Viola Wiegand
    Abstract:

This chapter situates corpus Stylistics within wider trends in the digital humanities and emphasises the need for developing tools and visualisation methods tailored to the analysis of literary texts. Using the CLiC web app, the chapter shows how standard corpus linguistic methods can be further developed to better address research questions in literary Stylistics. The analysis presents an innovative comparative approach to the identification of speech clusters in an individual fictional text—Dickens’s Great Expectations—as compared to larger corpora containing all of Dickens’s novels and authentic spoken language, respectively. This comparative perspective does not only emphasise differences between fictional speech and narration, but also considers overlapping patterns. The chapter links the notions of deviation and norms that are drawn on in literary Stylistics to corpus linguistic comparisons of different corpora with particular emphasis on the fuzzy nature of linguistic categories.

  • the corpus stylistic analysis of fiction or the fiction of corpus Stylistics
    2012
    Co-Authors: Michaela Mahlberg
    Abstract:

This paper argues that corpus Stylistics can contribute methodologies and concepts to support the investigation of character information in fiction. Focusing on Charles Dickens, the paper looks at lexicogrammatical patterns as well as places in the literary text. It suggests that clusters, i.e. repeated sequences of words, and suspensions, i.e. interruptions of characters’ speech by the narrator, can serve as textual cues in the process of characterization. These concepts are illustrated with examples for the characters Bucket and Tulkinghorn in Bleak House. The analysis of the examples leads to an outline of challenges for corpus Stylistics that result from the need to interpret features on the textual surface in relation to the effects they might have on the processing of the text by readers.1

  • PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS IN LITERARY DISCOURSE: IMPLICATIONS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
    2015
    Co-Authors: Anita Naciscione
    Abstract:

This article explores the stylistical use of phraseological units in literary discourse. A phraseological unit may extend across sentence boundaries and even large stretches of text, creating a continuity, a web of unique interrela-tionships of figurative and direct meanings, and associative links. Sustained discoursal use of a phraseological unit contributes to the perception of the text as a cohesive and coherent entity. Failure to identify stylistic use will be to the detriment of inference and interpretation, and henee a semantic and stylistic loss. The article also considers the implications of a discourse-based approach to phraseological units in teaching and learning. The exploration of the dis-coursal potential of phraseological units is of immediate relevance to the stud-ies of language and literature as an área of applied Stylistics. Teaching stylis-tic use helps to disclose the cognitive processes of the mind in creative thinking. It can lead to significant gains in stylistic awareness which involves a conscious perception and understanding of: significant changes in the base form and meaning of the phraseological unit, associative links and their net-works, stylistic cohesive ties in the text and the creation of a new meaning in discourse. KEY WORDS Phraseological unit, base form, core use, instantial stylistic use, pattern, stylistic awareness, applied Stylistics.
