  • Supply Situation REPORT: Potash: things can only get better
    Industrial minerals, 2014
    Co-Authors: Kasia Patel
    Abstract:

The vast majority of potash is found in Canada and Russia, which hold potash reserves of 4.4bn and 3.3bn tonnes respectively, of the world's 9.5bn tonnes total, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Figures from Russian potash producer, Uralkali, indicate that the oldest reserves in Russia were formed between 275m and 290m years ago, while Canadian deposits formed around 370m years ago under the earth's surface. Deposits in the UK, Germany and Brazil formed underground between 250m and 120m years ago. In its 2013 full year financial results, released in February 2014, PotashCorp. said that "challenging fertiliser market conditions impacted our performance". In November 2013, Mosaic's CEO, Jim Prokopanko referred to the company's weak results caused by "challenges in the environment in which we operate", while Uralkali's head of sales and marketing, Oleg Petrov, described potash demand as being in "a prolonged, steady decline" following the demand highs of 2011. Whichever way one looks at it, 2013 was a difficult year for the potash industry as demand dropped, buyers held off from purchases and investors lost confidence. Several potash juniors though, such as ASX-listed Elemental Minerals developing the Sintoukola potash project in ROC, West Africa, have chosen to invest in the region. However, where Elemental plans to target South America with its potash, saying that the African market "isn't there yet", other companies like Allana Potash anticipate that Africa will become a major power house with investment from the Middle East, China and Russia.

  • Supply Situation Report: North American potash and phosphate
    Industrial minerals, 2013
    Co-Authors: Kasia Patel
    Abstract:

PotashCorp., one of the leading potash producers in North America, owns six potash mines in Canada with a total capacity of 11.9m tonnes. Lanigan (3.8m tpa) and Rocanville (3m tpa) are the company's two biggest potash mines, before Allan (1.9m tpa), Gary (1.4m tpa), Patience Lake (1m tpa) and News Brunswick (0.8m tpa). Producing the three main fertiliser nutrients, nitrogen, potash and phosphate, Agrium's sole potash plant at Vanscoy, Saskatchwan produces just over 2m tpa potash, making it the 10 th largest potash producer globally. "The amount of land is shrinking all the time," [Dean Pekeski] told IM. "We see it here, in the west - certainly in Vancouver land is at a premium. You have arable land decreasing and you're going to have to have more yield from smaller areas - potash certainly does that," he added.

  • Supply Situation REPORT: In the driving seat: talc demand looks to automobile market
    Industrial minerals, 2013
    Co-Authors: Kasia Patel
    Abstract:

In 2012, there were four companies mining talc via open pit operations in the US. Between them they operated six mines in four states in the US. The three leading talc producers, which collectively accounted for nearly all of the talc mined in the US in 2012, included American Talc Co., in Texas, Imerys Talc America, in Montana and Vermont, and Specialty Minerals, in Montana. Alberene in Virginia also produced talc, while CAL-TALC Inc. in California worked from existing stockpiles in 2012 without mining any new talc. In terms of imported talc and talc produced in the US, the largest consumer of the mineral was the plastics market. The USGS estimates that of the 325,000 tonnes talc imported in 2012, 155,000 tonnes was used in plastics, 25,000 was used in paint, 20,000 in cosmetics, 12,000 in ceramics, 8,000 for paper, 8,000 for rubber, and talc for other uses was estimated at around 22,000 tonnes. As the Chinese talc industry has moved from the export of crude talc to ground talc and micronised talc, demand for higher grade products has also risen and now exceeds Supply. This has resulted in a steady increase of talc prices from China with an annual increase of around 10% for the past five years, according to [Jia Xiuzhuang].

    Renewable Energy, 1995
    Co-Authors: Mohammed A. Ghaffar

Pakistan has few energy resources and the country is heavily dependent on the import of fossil fuel. More than 20% of foreign exchange earnings is spent on oil imports every year. The urban population has access to commercial energy sources but the rural population consumes wood, animal and crop waste for its domestic energy needs. Interest in renewables as part of national energy supplies is growing. Among renewables, biogas and solar energy receive more attention because of their good resource potential. Renewables, especially biogas and solar energy, could Supply energy for various applications and thus raise the living standards of the people.
