    AbstractBackgroundAdhesion formation is an important complication of abdomino-pelvic surgery. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects which prevent production and accumulation of collagen and, thus, may reduce adhesion formation. The present study examined the effect of green tea alcoholic extract on intra-abdominal adhesion formation. Total phenolic, flavonoid and flavonol contents as well as anti-oxidant activity were also evaluated.MethodsThirty healthy male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to two equal groups of green tea (A) and distilled water (B). After anesthesia, the abdominal wall was opened and three shallow longitudinal and transverse incisions of 2 cm in length were made on the right side of the peritoneum by scalpel blade. A 2 × 2 cm square of the left abdominal wall peritoneum was removed by Surgical Scissors. Green tea extract or distilled water was introduced into the abdominal cavity of each rat. The rats were sacrificed two weeks post-laparotomy and adhesion bands were scored according to severity, extent and appearance. Fibrosis and inflammation were also scored via histopathological examination.ResultsThere was a significant difference in mean adhesion scores between the green tea and distilled water groups (3.2 ± 3.503 and 7.33 ± 0.51, respectively) (p = 0.001). In terms of fibrosis (p = 0.002) and inflammation (p = 0.003) a statistically significant difference was also seen between the two groups following histopathological examination.ConclusionGreen tea extract reduces intra-peritoneal adhesions in an animal model

This study was carried out to validate the feasibility of two methods of grinding hair for cortisol extraction in Korean native (Hanwoo) cattle. Hair from nine cattle including mature cows, heifers, and calves were assigned to one of the following methods for grinding hair; 1) using bead beater (BB) and 2) using Surgical Scissors (SS). Hair samples (> 1 g) were harvested from forehead of each individual twice (first and second measurement) to validate the results. To improve the accuracy of the obtained data, each sample was duplicated into two wells during enzyme immunoassay (EIA) analysis. Overall comparison of hair cortisol concentration (HCC) showed that the data within the range (out of the range) of standards provided by the EIA kit were 88.9% (11.1%) and 66.7% (33.3%) for BB compared with SS, respectively. In the first measurement, application of BB was tended to show higher (p = 0.056) amount of HCC compared with SS. In the second measurement application of BB showed higher (p = 0.0028) amount of HCC compared with SS. Among the cattle, calves showed higher HCC using BB compared with SS (p < 0.05). Application of BB in hair grinding methodology for Hanwoo cattle may improve cortisol extraction in comparison to application of SS method, with more consistency. Thus, it would be the preferable method to use.

  • Tetherless Mobile Micro-Surgical Scissors Using Magnetic Actuation

    Abstract:

    Current minimally-invasive Surgical tools suffer from lack of scalability and restricted access to some Surgical sites using a laparoscopic probe. This paper introduces a proof-of-concept prototype of the first completely wireless Surgical Scissors capable of dexterous motion and cutting in a remote environment as a mobile microrobotic device. The 15 mm untethered Surgical Scissors are custom made from sharpened titanium sheets with a magnet on each blade for actuating force and control. A super-elastic nitinol wire acts as a restoring spring and results in a simple design with no pin joint which is difficult to fabricate at small sizes. To actuate and control the Scissors, a 3D magnetic coil system is used here for testing and demonstration. An external magnetic flux density of 20 mT can be generated using the coils and is used for cutting as well as orienting, moving and closing the Scissors. In this first prototype setup, the Scissors can generate up to 75 mN of cutting force, and we demonstrate the cutting of agar. As a proof of concept demonstration of the potential use of the Scissors as a completely untethered Surgical tool, we robotically maneuver the Scissors to a target location in a confined environment where they cut through agar and return to their initial position.
