  • the Symbolic Violence of outbreak a mixed methods quasi experimental impact evaluation of social protection on ebola survivor wellbeing
    Social Science & Medicine, 2017
Co-Authors: Eugene T Richardson, Daniel J Kelly, Osman Sesay, Michael Drasher, Ishaan K Desai, Raphael Frankfurter, Paul Farmer, Mohamed Bailor Barrie
    Abstract:

Abstract Despite over 28,000 reported cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the 2013–16 outbreak in West Africa, we are only beginning to trace the complex biosocial processes that have promoted its spread. Important questions remain, including the effects on survivors of clinical sequelae, loss of family and livelihood, and other psychological and social trauma. Another poorly understood question is what effect social protection and job creation programs have had on survivors’ wellbeing. Several clinical and social protection programs have been developed to respond to the needs of EVD survivors; however, little in the way of impact evaluation has taken place. We enrolled 200 randomly selected EVD survivors from Port Loko, Kenema, and Kailahun districts in Sierra Leone and stratified them based on the amount of instrumental social protection received post-discharge from an Ebola treatment unit. We then conducted a survey and in-depth interviews to assess participants’ wellbeing and food security. Social protection categories II-IV (moderate to extensive) were each significantly associated with ∼15–22% higher wellbeing scores compared to minimal social protection (p  Qualitative themes included having a sense of purpose during the crisis (work and fellowship helped survivors cope); using cash transfers to invest in business; the value of literacy and life-skills classes; loss of breadwinners (survivors with jobs were able to take over that role); and combating the consequences of stigma. We conclude that, for EVD survivors, short-term social protection during the vulnerable period post-discharge can pay dividends two years later. Based on the empiric evidence presented, we discuss how terms such as “outbreak” and “epidemic” do Symbolic Violence by creating the illusion that social suffering ends when transmission of a pathogen ceases.

    2019
Co-Authors: Pérez Álvarez, Thelma Elena, Universitat Autònoma De Barcelona. Departament D'antropologia Social I
    Abstract:

The development of this thesis is based on the interest in identifying and analyzing from an anthropological point of view, under the line of research of audiovisual anthropology and the line of transversal research of gender anthropology, the representations of women in television advertising in Mexico through of the manifestation of stereotypes related to The Myth of Beauty (Wolf, 1991), paying special attention to its possible connection with possible expressions of Symbolic Violence (Bourdieu, (1999 [1966]), as well as the effects that they can have for the women and men participating in the research, who are part of a network of interactions related to the application (multinational companies), production (advertising agencies), management at the governmental level (federal and local) and the experimentation of advertising television (two private secondary and high school colleges in Mexico City). In three parts, the first one constitutes the revision of the theoretical foundations; I examine the conformation and theoretical definition of the gender category from feminist approaches in the social sciences (anthropology, sociology and philosophy). I describe new meanings of feminisms in neoliberalism and the conformation of post-feminist culture. I place the body as an object of study in the social sciences, underlining the ambivalence of beauty, through which I exemplify some situations in which Symbolic Violence is imprinted on the body of women. I carry out a review on Symbolic Violence and I link this explanatory framework with changes of forms of Symbolic Violence animated by neoliberalism. Also, from the perspective of audiovisual anthropology, I explain factors such as the pedagogical discourse of advertising, the communicative process and the field of social representations to understand the internalization of television advertising content. I examine the issue of Violence against women in the mass media, I place some contradictions and tensions around human rights and I include two Latin American perspectives on positive communication for women. In this part I describe and explain the methodological tools chosen for the development of the research. The second part deals with the analysis, the results, conclusions, limitations of the investigation and some possible lines of continuity. I propose the approach of Symbolic Violence and argue that its operation in television advertising forms an axis that cooperates with the normalization of inequalities towards women in Mexico. In the third part, I present a communicative proposal whose objective is to raise awareness about Symbolic Violence in television advertising and provide some general keys aimed at soliciting, producing and supervising advertising to promote respect for the human rights of women in television advertising

  • Sexual stigma and Symbolic Violence experienced, enacted, and counteracted in young Africans' writing about same-sex attraction.
    Social science & medicine (1982), 2016
    Co-Authors: Kate Winskell, Gaëlle Sabben
    Abstract:

There is growing recognition of the health disparities faced by sexual minority populations and the critical role played by sexual stigma in increasing their vulnerability. Experienced, anticipated, and internalized, stigma based on sexual orientation reduces access to HIV/STI prevention and treatment services among African men who have sex with men and has been linked to compromised mental health, risk-taking, and HIV status. It is likely that similar processes undermine the health of sexual minority African women and transgender and non-binary people. There is a need for increased understanding of both the contextual factors and the cultural meanings, or Symbolic Violence, that inform sexual stigma and harmful stigma management strategies in contexts that are culturally and socio-politically oppressive for sexual and gender minorities. Using thematic data analysis and narrative-based methodologies, we analyzed narratives and essays on same-sex attraction contributed by young people aged 13-24 from ten African countries to a Spring 2013 scriptwriting competition on HIV, sexuality, and related themes. Submitted by 27 male and 29 female authors, the texts were written in response to a prompt inviting participants to "Tell a story about someone who is attracted to people of the same sex". We analyzed the ways in which sexual stigma and its effects are described, enacted, and counteracted in the texts. The data provide insights into the social and Symbolic processes that create and sustain sexual stigma in the context of broader transnational discourses. The data shed light on psychosocial challenges faced by sexual minority youth and identify both rhetoric, stereotypes, and discourse that devalue them and representations that counteract this Symbolic Violence. We share our findings in the hope they may inform education and communication programming as part of multi-level efforts to improve the health and human rights of sexual minority populations in sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Symbolic Violence and the politics of environmental pollution science the case of coal ash pollution in bosnia and herzegovina
    Antipode, 2013
    Co-Authors: Vanesa Castan Broto
    Abstract:

:  Environmental justice movements often contest environmental knowledge by engaging in scientific debates, which implies accepting the predominance of scientific discourses over alternative forms of knowledge. Using Bourdieu's concept of Symbolic Violence, this paper warns that the engagement with hegemonic forms of knowledge production may reproduce, rather than challenge, existing social and environmental inequalities. The argument is developed with reference to a case study of coal ash pollution in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The case study shows that the construction of knowledge in a scientific project led to the exclusion of local definitions of the situation and the dismissal of their observations of environmental pollution. The case suggests that the capacity of different actors to put forward their interpretation of an environmental issue depends on the forms of Symbolic Violence that emerge within hegemonic discourses of the environment.

  • Symbolic Violence and the neighbourhood the educational aspirations of 7 8 year old working class girls
    British Journal of Sociology, 2004
    Co-Authors: Paul Connolly, J Healy
    Abstract:

This article focuses on the experiences of 7-8 year old working-class girls in Belfast, Northern Ireland and their attitudes towards education. It shows how their emerging identities tend to emphasize relationships, marriage and motherhood at the expense of a concern with education and future careers. The article suggests that one important factor that can help explain this is the influence of the local neighbourhood. In drawing upon Bourdieu's concepts of Symbolic Violence and habitus and Elias' notion of figuration, the article shows how the local neighbourhood represents the parameters of the girls' social worlds. It provides the context within which the girls tend to focus on social relations within their community and particularly on family relationships, marriage and children. It also provides the context within which the girls tend to develop strong interdependent relationships with their mothers that also tend to encourage and reinforce the girls' particular gendered identities. The article concludes by arguing that there is a need for more research on working-class girls and education to look beyond the school to incorporate, more fully, an understanding of the influence of the family and local neighbourhood on their attitudes towards education and their future career aspirations.

  • Symbolic Violence locality and social class the educational and career aspirations of 10 11 year old boys in belfast
    Pedagogy Culture and Society, 2004
    Co-Authors: Paul Connolly, J Healy
    Abstract:

Abstract This article is based upon a comparative, ethnographic case study of two groups of 10-11-year-old boys – one middle-class, the other working-class – living in Belfast. Drawing upon Bourdieu's related concepts of Symbolic Violence and habitus, it shows how locality can help to explain the very different educational and career aspirations found between these two groups of boys. While the local area in which the middle-class boys live had very little significance to them, the working-class boys' locality played a central role in mediating their experiences and perspectives. The article shows how it tended to represent the parameters of the boys' world-view and thus to significantly limit their educational and future career aspirations. The article concludes by arguing that there is a need to move beyond simplistic notions of power based upon crude freedom/constraint dualisms and, instead, to explore the complex ways in which broader processes and structures of inequality are experienced and tend to ...
