  • development of mesophase from a low temperature coal Tar Pitch
    Energy & Fuels, 2003
Co-Authors: Roberto García, José L. Crespo, S C Martin, Colin E Snape, Sabino R. Moinelo
    Abstract:

In this study, a low-temperature coal Tar Pitch (CTP1) was subjected to carbonization in order to study the formation, growth, and development of mesophase achieved under different conditions. The results were compared to those obtained with a petroleum Pitch (PP) and a conventional high-temperature coal Tar Pitch (CTP2). CTP1 was converted to mesophase at a considerably lower temperature, and also mesophase develops and coalesces at a markedly higher rate for this Pitch. Volatile matter removal is a key factor in mesophase formation, but chemical composition also plays an important role, with substituted cata-condensed compounds constituting very reactive components in terms of anisotropic material development. More specifically, the oxygenated functional groups and aliphatic substituents facilitate the growth of mesophase. In particular, the high concentration of phenolic compounds present in CTP1 seems to contribute to the fast coalescence of mesophase spheres. The effect of several additives was also ...

  • Mesophase from a coal Tar Pitch: a Raman spectroscopy study
    Fuel Processing Technology, 2002
Co-Authors: Miguel A. Montes-morán, José L. Crespo, Roberto García, Robert J. Young, Sabino R. Moinelo
    Abstract:

Raman spectroscopy has been utilised to detect changes in the structural order accompanying the process of mesophase spherules preparation. A coal Tar Pitch was selected as the precursor and it was carbonised under the appropriate conditions to produce a discrete amount of anisotropic material present almost completely in the form of spherules. These anisotropic spherules were concentrated by partial removal of the isotropic phase by hot filtration. The analysis by Raman spectroscopy confirmed an increase of the graphene-like orientation from the original coal Tar Pitch to the final anisotropic concentrate, with the carbonisation semicoke presenting an intermediate behaviour. The results indicate that Raman spectroscopy can be employed to monitor the process of production of mesophase spherules from coal Tar Pitches by studying the degree of structural order of the resultant product.

    Abstract:

Coal Tar Pitch was co-pyrolyzed with FCC slurry. The co-pyrolysis temperature is at 420oC with the mixture of coal Tar Pitch and FCC slurry mixing ratio of 1:1. The penetration, softening point, ductility and other properties meets the specifications of BZ200. The co-pyrolysis asphalt was analyzed using FTIR, NMR etc. The results show that there occurs hydrogen transfer and alkyl transfer reaction of FCC slurry and coal Tar Pitch during co-pyrolysis, leading to the improvement of molecular structure of modified asphalt.

  • The kinetics research on coal Tar Pitch and its extraction
Proceedings of the 2015 4th International Conference on Sensors Measurement and Intelligent Materials, 2016
Co-Authors: Chuanli Xu, Xianglin Cheng, Jian-hong Zhao, Liucheng Wang, Jianshe Wang, Cheng-ying Song
    Abstract:

Keyword: Coal Tar Pitch; thermogravimetric analysis; kinetics Abstract: The kinetics of pyrolysis characteristics of coal Tar Pitch (CTP) and quinoline soluble of CTP (refined Pitch) were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis at the heating rate of 5, 10, 15, 20 /min, respectively. °C The reaction kinetics parametres were obtained based on Kissinger method, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method and Friedman method, respectively. The results show that pyrolysis process of CTP and the refined Pitch includes three stages. Different heating rate has different effect on carbonization. The pre-exponential factor lnA of CTP and the refined Pitch is 14.40 and 12.06, respectively. The reaction mechanism function of CTP and the refined Pitch is [-ln(1-α)]. The CTP shows more significant temperature sensitivity and higher reactivity than the refined Pitch.

  • needle coke formation derived from co carbonization of ethylene Tar Pitch and polystyrene
    Fuel, 2009
Co-Authors: Xianglin Cheng, Jingtao Zhong, Xiaojun Yang
    Abstract:

Abstract Ethylene Tar Pitch was co-carbonized with waste polystyrene to prepare needle coke. The modified properties of mesophase, which were greatly improved due to increasing naphthenic and other alkyl content, availed the formation of needle coke with high quality. The coefficient of thermal expansion value was decreased from 3.2 × 10−6/°C to 0.3 × 10−6/°C and the optical texture of the coke was changed from coarse mosaic texture to flow domain of high uniaxial orientation after adding waste polystyrene into ethylene Tar Pitch. The low viscosity of the mesophase Pitches favored the development of mesophase and highly uniaxial arrangement. The increase in alkyl group content greatly improved characteristics of the needle coke.

  • modified characteristics of mesophase Pitch prepared from coal Tar Pitch by adding waste polystyrene
    Fuel Processing Technology, 2008
Co-Authors: Xianglin Cheng, Xuejun Li, Xiaojun Yang
    Abstract:

Abstract The toluene soluble of coal Tar Pitch was carbonized with waste polystyrene. The properties of mesophase Pitches were characterized using polarized light optical microscope, apparent viscometer, FT-IR, 1 H NMR and X-ray diffractometer. After adding the waste polystyrene into the toluene soluble of coal Tar Pitch, the soluble mesophase were was increased from about 9% to 52% and the mesophase Pitches were changed from 74% with coarse mosaic texture to 100% with flow domain texture. The mesophase Pitches were transformed from thixotropy to unthixotropy. By waste polystyrene added into the toluene soluble of coal Tar Pitch, the methylene group was increased a lot. The presence of more alkyl groups modified the characteristics of mesophase Pitches and improved the assembly of mesophase Pitch molecules.

  • semi quantitative ftir analysis of a coal Tar Pitch and its extracts and residues in several organic solvents
    Energy & Fuels, 1992
Co-Authors: Maria D Guillen, Maria Jose Iglesias, A Dominguez, C Blanco
    Abstract:

The infrared spectra from 650 to 4000 cm −1 and their semiquantative analysis for a coal Tar Pitch and extracts and residues obtained when this coal Tar Pitch was treated with organic solvents are discussed. This analysis supplies excellent information on the concentration of the several functionalities in the samples. The treatment with solvents provides carbonaceous materials with different concentrations of the same functionalities which can be very useful in the study of relationships between composition, properties, and behavior. The different aromaticity of the samples, in relation with the hydrogen, are discussed. A preponderance of aromatic hydrogens, distributed mainly in structures containing four neighboring aromatic C-H bonds, and an appreciable amount of hydrogens attached to saturated carbon atoms, even in the insoluble fractions, can be observed

  • Study of relationships between solvent effectiveness in coal Tar Pitch extractions and solvent solubility parameters
Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 1991
    Co-Authors: C.g. Blanco, Maria D Guillen
    Abstract:

Relationships between solvent extractive ability with coal Tar Pitches and Hildebrand's solubility parameter have been studied. In addition, taking into account Hansen's solubility parameter components, relationships between these and solvent effectiveness in coal Tar Pitch extractions have been studied. In this paper it is proved that organic solvents with a high solubility parameter dispersive component are the best coal Tar Pitch solvents, providing their polarity and their ability to give rise to hydrogen bonding interactions do not exceed certain limits.
