    Abstract:

In recent years, facing of growing pressure on resources and the environment, the inevitable choice is to improve the traditional energy efficiency and vigorously advance the renewable energy development. At the aspect of Technology, distributed generation (DG) Technology which deploys renewable energy sources gives an effective technical approach. With the level of penetration of distributed generation becomes higher, the challenges for future distribution Systems have presented smart grid (SG), which integrate the advanced sensing Technology, communication Technology and automatic control Technology, effectively takes advantage of distributed generation Technology, achieves real-time alternation and coordinated operation, as well as performs the value and benefit of distributed generation.

  • transforming agriculture in china from solely high yield to both high yield and high resource use efficiency
    Global Food Security, 2013
Co-Authors: Jianbo Shen, Weifeng Zhang, Zhenling Cui, Yuxin Miao, Hongyan Zhang, Mingsheng Fan, Chaochun Zhang, Rongfeng Jiang, Xinping Chen, Fusuo Zhang
    Abstract:

Abstract The challenges facing agriculture in China are probably more severe than ever before. We have developed an integrated Technology System in which the focus is on achieving both high crop productivity and high resource use efficiency (“double high” Technology System) to ensure food security and environmental sustainability. The components comprise (1) significantly increased grain-yield through high-yield crop management, i.e. an optimal cropping System design and management well adapted to climate conditions; (2) greatly increased nutrient-use efficiency through root/rhizosphere management to optimize the nutrient supply intensity and composition in the root zone to maximize root/rhizosphere efficiency; (3) improved soil quality to ensure long-term food security by managing soil organic matter and eliminating soil physical, chemical and biological constrains and (4) enhanced agricultural sustainability through resource and environment management by increasing resource use efficiency, reducing nutrient losses and greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing negative ecological footprints. In our work in major agricultural regions of China, this System has been successfully tested and demonstrated through well-organized farmer associations, enterprises with improved products and government extension networks. The new “double high” concept has the potential to become an effective agricultural development path to ensure food security and improve environmental quality, especially in China and other rapidly developing economies where agricultural intensification must achieve and must be transformed from low-efficiency Systems to achieving high yields with high resource use efficiency.

  • dc microgrid Technology System architectures ac grid interfaces grounding schemes power quality communication networks applications and standardizations aspects
    IEEE Access, 2017
Co-Authors: Dinesh Kumar, Firuz Zare, Arindam Ghosh
    Abstract:

To meet the fast-growing energy demand and, at the same time, tackle environmental concerns resulting from conventional energy sources, renewable energy sources are getting integrated in power networks to ensure reliable and affordable energy for the public and industrial sectors. However, the integration of renewable energy in the ageing electrical grids can result in new risks/challenges, such as security of supply, base load energy capacity, seasonal effects, and so on. Recent research and development in microgrids have proved that microgrids, which are fueled by renewable energy sources and managed by smart grids (use of smart sensors and smart energy management System), can offer higher reliability and more efficient energy Systems in a cost-effective manner. Further improvement in the reliability and efficiency of electrical grids can be achieved by utilizing dc distribution in microgrid Systems. DC microgrid is an attractive Technology in the modern electrical grid System because of its natural interface with renewable energy sources, electric loads, and energy storage Systems. In the recent past, an increase in research work has been observed in the area of dc microgrid, which brings this Technology closer to practical implementation. This paper presents the state-of-the-art dc microgrid Technology that covers ac interfaces, architectures, possible grounding schemes, power quality issues, and communication Systems. The advantages of dc grids can be harvested in many applications to improve their reliability and efficiency. This paper also discusses benefits and challenges of using dc grid Systems in several applications. This paper highlights the urgent need of standardizations for dc microgrid Technology and presents recent updates in this area.

  • photochemical inactivation of chikungunya virus in plasma and platelets using the mirasol pathogen reduction Technology System
    Transfusion, 2013
Co-Authors: Dana L Vanlandingham, Raymond P Goodrich, Shawn D Keil, Kate Mcelroy Horne, Richard B Pyles, Stephen Higgs
    Abstract:

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a reemerging mosquito-borne virus that has been responsible for a number of large-scale epidemics as well as imported cases covering a wide geographical range. As a blood-borne virus capable of mounting a high-titer viremia in infected humans, CHIKV was included on a list of risk agents for transfusion and organ transplant by the AABB Transfusion-Transmitted Diseases Committee. Therefore, we evaluated the ability of the Mirasol pathogen reduction Technology (PRT) System (CaridianBCT Biotechnologies) to inactivate live virus in contaminated plasma and platelet (PLT) samples. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Plasma, PLTs, and phosphate-buffered saline controls were spiked with CHIKV and treated with riboflavin and varying doses of ultraviolet (UV) light using the Mirasol PRT System. Samples were tested before and after treatment for cytotoxicity, interference, and virus titer by titration and quantitative real-time reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: A significant reduction in CHIKV titer of greater than 99% was recorded after treatment of plasma or PLTs with the Mirasol PRT System, and the titer reduction was directly proportional to the UV dose delivered to the samples. No cytotoxicity of interference was observed in any sample at any treatment dose. CONCLUSION: These data indicate that the Mirasol PRT System efficiently inactivated live CHIKV in plasma and PLTs and could therefore potentially be used to prevent CHIKV transmission through the blood supply. M any emerging infections are caused by blood-borne parasites, bacteria, or viruses

  • the mirasol pathogen reduction Technology System and quality of platelets stored in platelet additive solution
    Blood Transfusion, 2010
Co-Authors: Hakon Reikvam, Susanne Marschner, Torunn O Apelseth, Raymond P Goodrich, Tor Hervig
    Abstract:

Background. The Mirasol Pathogen Reduction Technology System for platelets and plasma uses riboflavin and UV light to introduce irreparable lesions into nucleic acids thereby inhibiting pathogen and white blood cell replication and reducing the load of infectious pathogens. The aim of the present study was to evaluate low plasma buffy coat platelet concentrates obtained from the OrbiSac System and to examine the effects on the development of platelet storage lesion during storage in platelet additive solution. Material and Methods. Twenty buffy coat platelet concentrates were generated by pooling five individual units using the OrbiSac System. Riboflavin was added during the final pooling step, and the units were exposed to UV light. The bag was removed after the target energy of 6.24 J/mL had been delivered and 150 mL of platelet additive solution were added prior to storage. Platelet quality was assessed by pH, swirl, CD62P expression, lactate dehydrogenase,
