Biorenewable rosin derived benzocyclobutene resin: a Thermosetting Material with good hydrophobicity and low dielectric constant
RSC Advances, 2019Co-Authors: Dan Wang, Shen Minggui, Shibin Shang, Zhanqian Song, Jie SongAbstract:Development of bio-based polymers has been promoted by the growing concerns about the long-term sustainability and negative environmental footprint of petroleum-based polymer Materials. A new monomer containing benzocyclobutene and allyl units has been developed by using rosin as the feedstock. The structure of the monomer was characterized by elemental analysis, MS, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. The monomer could be converted to the polymer via thermal ring-opening polymerization which was characterized via FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), atom force microscopy (AFM) and so on. The polymer showed good dielectric properties and hydrophobicity with an average dielectric constant of 2.51 in a range of frequencies from 0.1 to 18 MHz and a water contact angle of 106°. In addition, the polymer with other comprehensive performances exhibited a 5% weight loss temperature of 406 °C, a surface roughness (Ra) of 0.658 nm in a 5.0 × 5.0 μm2 area, hardness and Young's modulus of 0.283 and 3.542 GPa, and storage modulus of 11.46 GPa at 30 °C. These data suggest that the polymer may have potential application in electronics and microelectronics.

The kinetic behavior of Liquid Silicone Rubber: A comparison between thermal and rheological approaches based on gel point determination
Reactive and Functional Polymers, 2016Co-Authors: Ali Harkous, Gael Colomines, Éric Leroy, Pierre Mousseau, Rémi DeterreAbstract:Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) belongs to the category of High Temperature Vulcanization rubbers (HTVs). Due to its implementation facility, its mechanical and thermal properties and its convenience for the medical and food industries, LSR is used in a wide range of applications. In order to examine LSR kinetic performances, thermal and rheometric experimental investigations are conducted to characterize the Material and discuss the kinetic model describing crosslinking behavior. The Gel Point is investigated at different temperatures to improve our understanding of the different crosslinking steps and determine which characterization method (thermal or rheological) best represents the reaction. The results show that the LSR network undergoes specific development during crosslinking. Gel point occurs before the mechanical reaction starts. Gelation behavior resembles that of a Thermosetting Material despite the elasto-mer properties confirmed by the thermal study. Finally, the thermal method seems more reliable to describe the crosslinking kinetics of LSR.

Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of a New Polymer Blend Composed of 1,2-Bis(vinylphenyl)ethane and Thermosetting Poly(phenylene ether) Copolymer Obtained from 2,6-Dimethylphenol and 2-Allyl-6-methylphenol
Polymer Journal, 2007Co-Authors: Jun Nunoshige, Haruo Akahoshi, Yonggui Liao, Shin Horiuchi, Yuji Shibasaki, Mitsuru UedaAbstract:A novel low-dielectric-loss Thermosetting Material was developed by blending poly(2-allyl-6-methylphenol-co-2,6-dimethylphenol) (Allyl-PPE) with 1,2-bis(vinylphenyl)ethane (BVPE). BVPE could be used effectively as a crosslinking agent for Allyl-PPE, decreasing the cured temperature to 250 °C or lower. The cured products exhibited better thermal and thermomechanical properties than those of non-functionalized-PPE/BVPE blends because of the homogeneity of the cured products. The phases-separated morphologies with small domain sizes less than 10 nm could be observed by employing energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy. The effect of the composition of the blends on the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss were also evaluated.
