    Abstract:

    This paper explicates the metaphors used to conceive of asynchronous text-based communication (ATBC) software, such as email and newsgroups. Design of such software has been guided by an understanding of ATBC as essentially a text communication (textual metaphor). However, this mode of discourse has many similarities with oral communication as well. The interaction of oral and textual aspects in ATBC gives rise to a phenomenon of multiThreaded discourse, where several discourse threads develop simultaneously, which is a unique property of this medium. Our main tenet here is that application of textual metaphor has narrowed the scope of possible designs. We propose a design approach, which explicitly promotes the metaphor of oral communication (Conversation) and oral traits of ATBC discourse, while also supporting the multiThreaded discourse structure. The consequent interface design challenge is that of creating a way to visualise human Conversation that would preserve the spontaneity of oral Conversation whilst also utilising the persistent nature of text. This goal has been accomplished by spatial representation of multi-Threaded discourse in a shared workspace. Based on this proposed way of visualisation, a prototype tool called 'Conversation Space' (ConverSpace) has been created.

    Publisher Summary Since the inception of the Internet, most virtual communities have relied on asynchronous Threaded Conversation platforms as a main channel of communication. Usenet newsgroups, email lists, web boards, and discussion forums all contain collections of messages in reply to one another. Although they make use of a wide range of technologies that differ in their delivery infrastructure, all Threaded Conversations share similar characteristics: they are composed of single-authored messages organized into threads (i.e., a top-level message, replies to that message, and possibly replies to those replies), threads are often found within topics or groups, messages are often permanent, and users often have a shared view of the Conversation. These Conversations lend themselves to the creation of several networks, including the directed, weighted Reply network and Top-Level Reply network; the undirected, weighted affiliation network connecting threads (or forums) to the individuals that posted to them; and the undirected, weighted networks derived from the affiliation network including the user-to-user network and thread-to-thread network. This chapter discusses analyses of several Threaded networks, including the CSS-D technical support community, ABC-D discussion-based email list, and Ravelry online community.

    Analyzing complex online relationships is a difficult job, but new in- formation visualization tools are enabling a wider range of users to make action- able insights from the growing volume of online data. This paper describes the challenges and methods for conducting analyses of Threaded Conversations such as found in enterprise message boards, email lists, and forums. After defining Threaded Conversation, we characterize the types of networks that can be ex- tracted from them. We then provide 3 mini case studies to illustrate how action- able insights for community managers can be gained by applying the network analysis metrics and visualizations available in the free, open source NodeXL tool, which is a powerful, yet easy-to-use tool embedded in Excel 2007/2010.

    • Homogenous view. The partitioning of messages into topics is shared by all viewers. Moreover, users all see the same view of the messages in a topic, either in chronological or reverse chronological order. In some cases, messages are sorted into threads, with chronological presentation of threads, and chronological presentation within threads. In some cases, the system will keep track of which messages a user has previously viewed, so that it can highlight the unread messages, but that is the only personalization of how people view the messages.
