ShaffnerAbstract:Abstract RECENT experimental work in the field of endocrinology suggests that possibly the thyroid gland through its hormone thyroxine, which regulates many body processes, may play an important role in the reproductive ability of the domestic fowl. Changes in the level of activity of the thyroid gland have been experimentally induced in opposite directions with thiouracil or Thyroprotein. Meyer and Ransom (1945) determined the effects of thyroidectomy or 0.5 percent thirouracil in the ration on the metabolic rate of rats and found that they both produce comparable results in reducing the BMR to –41 percent. Shaffner and Andrews (1948) reported a 40 percent decrease in the resting metabolism of Barred Plymouth Rock males receiving rations containing 0.2 or 0.5 percent thiouracil for a period of 18 weeks. AndrewsAbstract:Abstract THE role of the thyroid gland in the regulation of many body processes is well known but its influence upon reproduction is only partially understood. Crew (1925) fed desiccated thyroid gland to five cocks and seven hens, five to eight years of age, for six months from May to October. After molting, the plumage was characteristic of younger fowl, head furnishings became red and turgid and egg production was increased. Cole and Hutt (1927) fed 20 White Leghorn hens desiccated thyroid at the rate of 59 milligrams per pound of live weight for a period of six weeks beginning November 1. This dosage did not affect egg production. Turner et al. (1945a) (1945b) found that the feeding of Thyroprotein to laying hens was beneficial in maintaining a high level of egg production during the second half of the laying year of pullets and increased egg production considerably in the second . . .

The stronger and thicker the shell, the less breakage that will occur on farms and in marketing channels. The specific gravity of the whole egg has been shown by Olsson (1934) to be a good measure of shell thickness. Novikoff and Gutteridge (1949), comparing the different methods of determining shell strength in eggs, concluded that the specific gravity method is the most reliable. Relatively little is known regarding the effect of the various hormones on shell thickness. Data obtained by Asmundson and Pinsky (1935), Gutteridge and Pratt (1946), Gutteridge and Novikoff (1947), Hoffmann and Wheeler (1948), Godfrey (1949), Berg and Bearse (1951), and Savage et al. The Effect of Thyroxine and Iodinated Casein on the Development of the Chick Thyroid

Sturkie, Rosalind BookerAbstract:Abstract Wheeler and Hoffman (1948) showed that the feeding of Thyroprotein to hens at the rate of 0.02% produced chicks that had significantly enlarged thyroid glands at hatching time. This seemed of special interest in the light of the fact that the administration of Thyroprotein to chicks or hens caused an involution of the thyroid, Wheeler, Hoffman and Graham (1948). One possible explanation for the enlargement of the thyroid gland in chicks from hens fed Thyroprotein is that the hen deposits, in the egg, thyroid-active or other substances which in some way affects the undifferentiated pituitary and thyroid of the embryo in a manner which is different from its affect on the pituitary or thyroid of the chick or hen. The Value of Thyroprotein in Starting, Growing and Laying Rations I. Growth, Feathering and Feed Consumption of Rhode Island Red Broilers

GrahamAbstract:Abstract THREE reports have appeared in recent years which suggested that Thyroprotein might be a desirable ingredient for commercial broiler rations. These previous trials were done with small numbers for each dosage level and the chicks were reared in batteries rather than under practical farm conditions. Moreover, the statistical significance of the differences in response to treatment was not determined. Thus a need was apparent for a more extensive test of these findings under commercial production conditions with the attendant crowding, contact with intestinal discharges, and other normal brooding hazards. The work reported here is an attempt to provide further information on the value of Thyroprotein when fed to broiler chicks under conditions approximating those in the field.
