  • Tinea corporis gladiatorum
Journal of The American Academy of Dermatology, 2002
    Co-Authors: Brian B Adams
    Abstract:

Abstract Many cutaneous disorders are reported in wrestlers. Most of these conditions are infectious. Herpes simplex infection in wrestlers is quite well known, but recently, dermatophyte infection has received increased attention. Tinea corporis gladiatorum, caused in most cases by Trichophyton tonsurans , infects wrestlers at alarming rates. Transmission of this infection is primarily through skin-to-skin contact. The rapid identification and treatment of Tinea corporis gladiatorum is vital to minimize disruption in team practices and competitions. Preventive measures, including pharmacologic intervention, are paramount. (J Am Acad Dermatol 2002;47:286-90.)

  • Tinea corporis gladiatorum a cross sectional study
Journal of The American Academy of Dermatology, 2000
    Co-Authors: Brian B Adams
    Abstract:

Abstract Background: Tinea corporis gladiatorum has been an infrequently reported condition in the dermatological literature. Two previous reports have investigated wrestlers during recognized epidemics of Tinea corporis gladiatorum, but no study has examined wrestlers to determine the point prevalence of Tinea corporis gladiatorum in a team without a known epidemic. Furthermore, no comparative study exists. Objective: The purpose of this article is to determine the prevalence of Tinea corporis gladiatorum in high school wrestlers in comparison with high school indoor track athletes. Methods: Members of both the high school wrestling and indoor track teams were examined for the presence of Tinea corporis. Students with clinical lesions of Tinea corporis were evaluated with potassium hydroxide examination. The prevalence of Tinea corporis in each group was compared. Results: Seven of the 29 high school wrestlers (24%) had lesions of Tinea corporis. No members of the track team had evidence of Tinea corporis. There was a statistical difference between the two groups ( P = .005). Conclusion: Tinea corporis gladiatorum can be found quite frequently among high school wrestlers. Because infection with dermatophytes can disqualify a wrestler from competing in matches, vigilant surveillance and rapid initiation of therapy can reduce the suspension of a team's practice and competition. • Tinea corporis bullosa
    Mycoses, 2009
    Co-Authors: L Terragni, M A Marelli, A Oriani, E Cecca
    Abstract:

Summary. The paper reports a case of Tinea corporis bullosa in a 63-year-old woman. Near the classical annular lesions on the anterior surface of the left leg, the patient presented frank bullous lesions. Serous fluid from the bulla yielded Microsporum canis, the first report of the association of this fungus with bullous lesions in Tinea corporis. The patient was investigated with routine examinations and immunological studies which showed an intense inflammatory process much greater than in usual cases of Tinea corporis.

  • case report widespread Tinea corporis due to trichophyton rubrum
    Mycoses, 2002
    Co-Authors: A Gorani, A. Schiera, A Oriani
    Abstract:

Summary.  We report the case of a 36-year-old man who presented large erythematous plaques involving the trunk, face and extremities, since one month. Some of these lesions had a psoriasis-like aspect, with abundant superficial scaling. Direct microscopic examination of scales removed from the plaques revealed numerous hyphae. Cultural examination lead to the identification of Trichophyton rubrum species. Our case of Tinea corporis presented some peculiarities related both to the extension of the lesions and their clinical aspects.

  • an outbreak of Tinea corporis gladiatorum on a high school wrestling team
Journal of The American Academy of Dermatology, 1994
Co-Authors: Michael Beller, Bradford D Gessner
    Abstract:

Background: An outbreak of Tinea corporis occurred in members of a high school wrestling team during the 1992–1993 season. Objective: To control the outbreak, we conducted an epidemiologic investigation. Methods: We examined 28 team members and obtained skin scrapings from 16. To control the outbreak we recommended (1) griseofulvin for 1 month to treat persons with more than two lesions or any facial lesion(s) and topical ketoconazole or econazole for 1 month to treat all others and (2) that wrestlers be excluded from wrestling until 10 days of topical treatment or 15 days of oral treatment had been completed. Results: Twenty-one wrestlers had lesions consistent with Tinea corporis and 10 had Trichophyton tonsurans infection confirmed by culture. A new eruption developed in 12 wrestlers after the recommendations were implemented. Conclusion: This is the third and largest outbreak of Tinea corporis gladiatorum to be described in the United States. Appropriate control measures have not yet been established.

  • the association of isoconazole diflucortolone in the treatment of pediatric Tinea corporis
    Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2018
    Co-Authors: S Veraldi, R Schianchi, Paolo Pontini, A Gorani
    Abstract:

AbstractBackground: Tinea corporis is a common mycotic infection in children. Staphylococcus aureus superinfections may be observed in atopic children with Tinea corporis suffering from severe pruritus and consequent scratching. Objective: From 2006 to 2011, we observed 288 children with mycologically proven Tinea corporis. In 39 of them (13.5%) Tinea corporis was superinfected by S. aureus: all these children were affected by atopic dermatitis. We interpreted these bacterial superinfections as the clinical result of scratching due to pruritus. Methods: In 2012, we decided to treat all children with a single lesion of Tinea corporis with a combination of 1% isoconazole nitrate and 0.1% diflucortolone valerate cream (one application/day for 5–7 days), followed by a treatment with isoconazole or clotrimazole or ciclopirox cream (two applications/day for two weeks). Results: From 2012 to 2014, we observed 108 children with Tinea corporis confirmed by mycological examinations. • case report Tinea corporis purpurea
    Mycoses, 1999
    Co-Authors: S Veraldi, A Gorani, E Schmitt, Raffaele Gianotti
    Abstract:

We report a case of Tinea corporis purpurea localized to a calf in a 36-year-old woman. The patient, who was also affected by mild superficial venous insufficiency of lower limbs, complained of intense pruritus. Microsporum canis was the aetiological agent. Clinically atypical varieties of Tinea corporis were sometimes reported in the literature, particularly in HIV-positive patients, although they are uncommon in immunocompetent patients; in particular, Tinea corporis purpurea is very rare.
