  • about voltage Total Harmonic Distortion for single and three phase multilevel inverters
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2015
    Co-Authors: Alex Ruderman
    Abstract:

Many recent multilevel inverter papers end up with voltage Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) values obtained from numerical voltage spectrum calculations (measurements). Motivated by IEEE Standard 519, a part of the multilevel research community uses a limited Harmonic count to evaluate the multilevel voltage quality. First, this causes significant voltage THD underestimation, particularly for relatively high frequency PWM. Second, for a three-phase star-connected balanced load with an isolated neutral and phase symmetric modulation strategy, the calculated load line and phase voltage THD become different. However, simple considerations show that line and phase voltage THDs are essentially the same in this case. It may be difficult to judge about the multilevel voltage quality given a numerically calculated (measured) voltage THD value that may be subject to computation errors. Presented are simple smooth hyperbolic voltage THD upper and lower bound approximations for single- and three-phase inverters with nearest synchronous switching. They are valid for arbitrary modulation indices and uniformly distributed level counts and may practically serve as good reference values.

  • Modeling and Analysis of Total Harmonic Distortion in Series-Series Wireless Power Transfer System for 6.78 MHz
2020 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2020
Co-Authors: Lixin Shi, J.c. Rodriguezt, Pedro Alou
    Abstract:

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology to supply power in applications where physical contact is not available. Current Harmonics in the system can cause problems in the operation of switches and the control of the circuit. This paper proposes a methodology to obtain an explicit analytical expression for Total Harmonic Distortion of primary and secondary current in a series-series (SS) WPT system. The theoretical model of a SS WPT system is presented for each Harmonic frequency. Using the proposed methodology, current Harmonic Distortion of a series-series WPT system is analyzed, and results are presented, to demonstrate how the current Harmonic Distortion can be minimized through appropriate selection of secondary coil and load. The analysis results show that the primary and secondary current Total Harmonic Distortion are only related with the inductance of secondary coil, the load, and the coupling factor in a series-series WPT system. A prototype has been built and tested experimentally to validate the proposal.

  • closed form analytic expression of Total Harmonic Distortion in single phase multilevel inverters with staircase modulation
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2020
Co-Authors: Eli Barbie, R Rabinovici, Alon Kuperman
    Abstract:

In this letter, explicit analytic expression of output voltage Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) in staircase modulated single-phase multilevel inverters (MLI) is derived and verified. The revealed nonrecursive formulae is expressed as a simple function of all possible switching angles, valid for generalized MLI irrespectively of the topology and number of voltage levels (odd or even). The proposed expression may be utilized for accurate calculation of THD values, eliminating the risk of underestimation associated with typical frequency-based (numerical) approaches adopted by modern computational software packages.
